Video: Taizo the robot teaches grandpa how to stretch, so you don’t have to

You know, maybe we were wrong-headed to keep harping on this ‘evil robot‘ meme. Sure, there are some no-goodniks in the robot community (as opposed to the robotics community, which we assure you is full of hard-working, well-meaning people) but look at all the good robots have done for us: they build our cars, serve us hot drinks, teach our young children, and now they help our oldsters with the physical therapy. Taizo, pictured here, is a delightful chap with a bulbous visage and a fun, plushy space suit who stands just over 24-inches tall and weighs 15.5 pounds. Operating for about two hours on a single charge, the robot is designed to lead low-impact group exercise (mostly while sitting down) and features voice recognition and a library of thirty different exercises. With 26 joints in its body, it’s a flexible fellow, for sure. We just hope that no one weaponizes the thing. Video after the break.

Stateside PS3 sales up 300% following Slim introduction

Boy, it sure likes Sony did something right slimmin’ down (and slightly cripplin’) that new PS3 of theirs. And sure, considering that the British picked up PlayStation 3 purchases a whopping 999%, maybe a Stateside retail bump of a “mere” 300% (for the first week after the price cut) is small potatoes. Or maybe we’re just growing jaded. If this isn’t great, good news enough for Sony, check it: as of August, according to a survey by GamePlan Insights, five of consumers’ top 10 most-wanted games are on PS3 (including Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, God of War III, Assassin’s Creed 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2). For more exciting facts, figures, and details, check out the PR after the break.

WinRAR 3.60 Released – Not Free This Time

This article was written on August 16, 2006 by CyberNet.

WinRAR WinRAR 3.60 was conveniently just released which comes about 2-weeks after they were offering version 3.51 for free. If you read the details when you got your free key it said that you are not entitled to any upgrades…and they stuck to that.

I figured there might be a slight chance that the newest version would work with the free key that I got, so I downloaded 3.60 and installed it. Nope, once I ran WinRAR it said that I was using evaluation copy that expires in 40 days.

Maybe the giveaway was some kind of “gimmick” to get people hooked on using it and then make them want to purchase an upgrade. If that’s what it was I don’t think that will work because looking at the changelog there isn’t anything that stands out enough to pay for it. There are several updates if you use the command line and the only thing that would be useful to me is the multithread/dual-core compatibility. If you have one of those processors then you will benefit from being able to compress files quicker but that isn’t worth $29, in my opinion.

Nokia Erdos: a shiny specter, or an OLED-equipped reality?

We’re in no position to say that Nokia‘s so-called Erdos — which was recently caught lookin’ pretty in the video down in the read link — is anything more than a fanatical mockup, but we’re fully ready to be believers. To be frank, we’ve a hard time understanding why Nokia wouldn’t showcase this gem at its recent Nokia World expo if it were indeed nearing release, but whatever the case, we’ve received a number of tips suggested that the OLED-packin’ handset could be formally introduced as early as next month. Falling within the 8xxx series, this ultrathin, ultra-shiny slider boasts a stainless steel design, A-GPS, 3G support, a 2.4-inch QVGA (320 x 240) display, WiFi, USB, 5 megapixel camera (with video recording) and 8GB of internal storage. Feel free to have a look for yourself, but just in case this all proves to be nothing more than a figment of some guy’s imagination, you should probably fall in love with the X6 as well. Video after the break.

RFID Technology Keeps Fruits Fresh

ambient-systems-strawberry.jpgRfid-Ready.com: Dutch active RFID provider Ambient Systems and Information Highway Group (IHG), the Spanish RFID system integrator, have conducted a successful project with Bionest, the largest Spanish organic strawberry producer, and with one of Germany’s largest retailers.

The use of Ambient’s third generation active RFID allowed Bionest to monitor the condition of strawberry transport from start to finish. The pilot used intelligent tags with a shelf-life algorithm, providing details of the quality of the strawberries per pallet. The integrated solution from Ambient and IHG created a ‘Cool Chain Monitor’ that offered immediate insights to substantially reduce waste and increase profit for all parties involved.

Up to 50% of food products are wasted in the food supply chain, according to a recent report from Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Mrs. Gerda Verburg. Strawberries and other ‘soft fruits’ that are highly sensitive to temperature conditions rank among the product categories with the highest loss in the supply chain. With better visibility on temperature conditions during transport and by applying a unique shelf-life algorithm, this loss can be reduced significantly.

gScreen Spacebook caught on video working its dual-screen magic

Admittedly, we had our doubts when we first heard about gScreen‘s dual-screen Spacebook portable and saw only renders and prototypes not shown working. We’ve now got video of the laptop in action, although the company couldn’t have done much more to make it a less appealing presentation. The glimpse is seconds long, the resolution is very low and lighting is poor, but it does seem to be working solution. Video beyond the read link, here’s hoping next time around we get something a little clear.

VIZIO Connected TV & VIZIO Internet App platform demoed at CEDIA

With VIZIO’s first LED local dimming backlit HDTV just days away from debut and its first Connected TV nearing production, we were able to lay eyes and hands on the television and its funky QWERTY Bluetooth / IR combo remote. Check the pics and videos (including looks at VIZIO’s smaller LED sets ready to hit shelves this fall) for a look at our walkthrough; in the demos at least, the VIZIO Internet Apps platform was speedy and easy to use, however our experience with widgets so far has given us more than enough reason to wait for a full retail rollout before making any final decisions. One tidbit for those not ready to invest a whole new TV? The next iteration of VIZIO’s Blu-ray player should pack not only integrated Wi-Fi, but also the full VIA / widget experience.

Check them out right now in the following gallery, we got a good look at the future on the CEDIA show floor, though whether Sony delivering all new hardware or everyone else’s strategy of upgrading existing players for Netflix, Amazon and other forms of streaming is the path to follow remains to be seen. The BDP-N460 should hit for about $250 starting next month.

It’s official! 802.11n standard finalized after a mere seven years

Remember when the Wi-Fi Alliance finalized the 802.11 draft-n spec some two and a half years ago? Of course you don’t — as long as your media players, laptops, and the like can connect to each other (and to the cloud) without a hiccup you probably don’t care about IEEE’s paper trail. The standard, which saw no major changes between then and now (meaning that all your draft-n devices should work fine with the finalized standard) theoretically connects at 300Mbps, or about six times the peak speed of 802.11g. But you already know that, since you’ve been using it for years now. The final standard is set to be published mid-October.

Samsung 65-inch LCD observed in its unnatural habitat at CEDIA

Just when you thought it was safe above 60-inches, Samsung’s showing off a new LCD at CEDIA with the best old-school CCFL tech has to offer. It may not have the sexy side profile of its edge lit-LED brethren or the cachet of certain plasmas but with the sheer size of the LN65B650, even shrouded by foliage in Samsung’s booth setup, we’re more than ready to catch a game on this baby.
