The Best of LCD: New LED-Lit TVs From LG, Samsung and Sony Compared

The best LCD sets money can buy are lit up by LEDs, and these are the best LED TVs you can buy from LG, Samsung and Sony. They start at $3600.

Given the wildly varying conditions of the show floor—and the frankly crappy source video, lighting and background LG picked for its demo TV—we can’t really judge which TV actually has the best picture quality right now, but the facts do tell us something:
• Samsung and LG both use local dimming on their 55 inchers, while Sony’s 52-inch TV is edge-lit
• Sony and LG have expensive built-in wireless HDMI for 1080p streaming from a paired media box
• Sony and Samung have the best “other” features, like great streaming video services
• Samsung’s the cheapest, at $4500 for its 55-inch set, probably because it lacks wireless
• Sony’s is the most expensive, even though it’s the smallest, and lacks full-array LED backlighting, like its champion precursor, the XBR8

In person, the XBR10 is gorgeous, really pulling off the floating TV look, and the Samsung 8500 sets are slick and slim. LG’s 55LHX is comparatively drab and physically more clunky, as you can see in our Sizemodo:

All in all, there’s no clear winner, and there are lots and lots of trade-offs. If you really want to blow five grand on a TV, you’re going to have a tough decision for now, at least until we get ’em side by side. [More CEDIA ’09 coverage]

Just because Pioneer isn’t in the plasma business anymore doesn’t mean the company is dead, and one of the new points of focus over there is on media aggregation. So part of the new do-it-all Entertainment Tap concept Pioneer was displaying today included a demo of storing Managed Copies of Blu-ray Discs on a hard drive. The copy itself was done in about 4x real time (dependent on the drive’s speed) and looked great thanks to some hardware transcoding. We also appreciated the Pioneer interface that made copying the disc easy. Of course at this point this is just a demo, with no word on availability or price, but it is a start to what will one day hopefully be a better way to enjoy HD movies.

Motoblur: Talk about socialized

Motoblur brings all the social networks to the home screen.

After months of waiting, we finally got an official look at Motorola’s first Google Android phone, the Cliq. The actual hardware offers little to get excited about, since it features the same CPU we have seen in every Android phone currently available. Yet, Motorola has developed Motoblur, which brings a ton of new social features to the Android platform. It looks pretty cool, though we couldn’t help but notice that it bears more than a passing resemblance to Palm’s Synergy.

The following are some of the highlights from Motoblur. Motorola has confirmed we will see these features across multiple Android phones.

Home Screen

Just like HTC did with its Sense UI, Motorola has created several new widgets for the Android desktop. Most focus on aggregating your social networks, RSS feeds, and messages directly on the desktop. This creates a live home screen that is automatically updated, which can is faster than opening up individual applications.

The featured widget is Happenings which collects the latest updates from Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and more. Other widgets allow you to get live feeds for weather, sports, and entertainment.

Motorola also has squeezed in new shortcuts for the dialer and contacts applications. These new buttons are squeezed in at the bottom of the home screen on both sides of the regular app drawer.

Social Networking

If you use social networking sites, Motoblur was made for you. Users enter their account information once during the initial phone setup and then never have to log in again. Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace are directly connected to many of the phone’s core functions. This provides a much more detailed contacts application than what is currently offered on the G1 or the MyTouch 3G.

Android currently provides the ability to sync your phone contacts with a Google account, but Motorola takes it to the next level by allowing your to sync your contacts with all of your social networks. …

Acer’s Congo-based 11.6-inch Ferrari One: finally, a netbook with speed

We’ve seen a couple of netbooks that we’d actually consider to be mildly quick, but given that locating an Ion-based netbook is about as easy as entering North Korea with a US passport, we haven’t had much of a chance to really love on ’em. Today, Acer is extending its boutique Ferrari lineup with the Ferrari One, an 11.6-inch machine that is among the first to rely on AMD’s newly announced Congo platform. Packed within the chassis is a dual-core 1.2GHz Athlon X2 L310 CPU, ATI’s Radeon 3200 graphics, an XPG port for connecting an external graphics solution, a 1,366 x 768 panel, WiFi, Bluetooth, optional WWAN and a 6-cell battery. You’ll also notice AMD Vision and Windows 7 badges alongside the obligatory prancing pony, but you can bet you’ll be paying dearly for this when it ships on (surprise, surprise) October 22nd. How dearly? Try £435 ($724), or roughly the cost of a single lug nut on an F430.

ATI Radeon Eyefinity unveiled: up to six monitors on a single card

At a press event today the gang at AMD unleashed their newest graphics technology on the world. To be incorporated in the next generation of ATI Radeons, Eyefinity can rock up to six displays (DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, etc.) with a single card, thanks to a new 40-nm graphics chip that contains 2 billion transistors, capable of 2.5 trillion calculations every second. Monitors can be configured to make up either one contiguous display or six separate ones, and the card can create 268 megapixel images. That means, according to Venture Beat, that it will deliver games with “12 times the high-definition resolution.” And the gang at Hot Hardware, who reports that the new graphic cards will come with either three or six display outs, put a prototype through its paces. We’re pleased to report that playing Left 4 Dead on three 30-inch displays “absolutely changes the experience for the better.” No word yet on a release date, but apparently Acer, Dell, HP, MSI and Toshiba already have Eyefinity notebooks in the works. Digital Contacts Will Keep an Eye on Your Vital Signs

Forget about 20/20. “Perfect” vision could be redefined by gadgets that give you the eyes of a cyborg.

The tech industry calls the digital enrichment of the physical world “augmented reality.” Such technology is already appearing in smartphones and toys, and enthusiasts dream of a pair of glasses we could don to enhance our everyday perception. But why stop there?

Scientists, eye surgeons, professors and students at the University of Washington have been developing a contact lens containing one built-in LED, powered wirelessly with radio frequency waves.

Eventually, more advanced versions of the lens could be used to provide a wealth of information, such as virtual captions scrolling beneath every person or object you see. Significantly, it could also be used to monitor your own vital signs, such as body temperature and blood glucose level.

Why a contact lens? The surface of the eye contains enough data about the body to perform personal health monitoring, according to Babak Parvis, a University of Washington professor of bionanotechnology, who is working on the project.

“The eye is our little door into the body,” Parvis told Wired.com.

With gadgets becoming increasingly mobile and powerful, the technology industry is seeing a steady stream of applications devoted to health. A few examples include a cellphone microscope used to diagnose malaria, surgeons honing their skills with the Nintendo Wiimote, and an iPhone app made for diabetes patients to track their glucose levels.

A contact lens with augmented-reality powers would take personal health monitoring several steps further, Parvis said, because the surface of the eye can be used to measure much of the data you would read from your blood tests, including cholesterol, sodium, potassium and glucose levels.

And that’s just the beginning. Because this sort of real-time health monitoring has been impossible in the past, there’s likely more about the human eye we haven’t yet discovered, Parvis said. And beyond personal health monitoring, this finger-tip sized gadget could one day create a new interface for gaming, social networking and, well, interacting with reality in general.

Parvis and his colleagues have been working on their multipurpose lens since 2004. They integrated miniature antennas, control circuits, an LED and radio chips into the lens using optoelectronic components they built from scratch. They hope these components will eventually include hundreds of LEDs to display images in front of the eye. Think words, charts and even photographs. (The illustration above is a concept image showing what it would look like with the lens displaying a digital overlay of the letter E.)

Sounds neat, doesn’t it? But the group faces a number of challenges before achieving true augmented eye vision.

rabbiteyeFirst and foremost, safety is a prime concern with a device that comes in contact with the eye. To ensure the lens is safe to wear, the group has been testing prototypes on live rabbits (pictured to the right), who have successfully worn the lenses for 20 minutes at a time with no adverse effects. However, the lens must undergo much more testing before gaining approval from the Food and Drug Administration.

A fundamental challenge this contact lens will face is the task of tracking the human eye, said Blair MacIntyre, an associate professor and director of the augmented environments lab at Georgia Tech College of Computing. MacIntyre is not involved in the contact lens product, but he helped develop an augmented-reality zombie shooter game.

“These developments are obviously very far from being usable, but very exciting,” MacIntyre said. “Using them for AR will be very hard. You need to know exactly where the user is looking if you want to render graphics that line up with the world, especially when their eyes saccade (jump around), which our eyes do at a very high rate.”

Given that obstacle, we’re more likely to see wearable augmented-reality eyeware in the form of glasses before a contact lens, MacIntyre said. With glasses, we’ll only need to track where the glasses are and where the eyes are relative to them as opposed to where the eyes are actually looking.

And with a contact lens, it will be difficult to cram heavy computational power into such a small device, even with today’s state-of-the-art technologies, Parvis admits. There are many advanced sensors that would amplify the lens’ abilities, but the difficulty lies in integrating them, which is why Parvis and his colleagues have had to engineer their own components. And when the contact lens evolves from personal health monitoring into more processor-intense augmented-reality applications, it’s more likely it will have to draw its powers from a companion device such as a smartphone, he said.

Layar, an Amsterdam-based startup focusing on augmented reality, shares University of Washington’s vision of an augmented-reality contact lens. However, Raimo van der Klein, CEO of Layar, said such a device’s vision would be limited if it did not work with an open platform supporting every type of data available via the web, such as mapping information, restaurant reviews or even Twitter feeds. Hence, his company has taken a first step by releasing an augmented-reality browser for Google Android smartphones, for which software developers can provide “layers” of data for various web services.

Van der Klein believes a consumer-oriented, multipurpose lens is just one example of where augmented-reality technology will take form in the near future. He said to expect these applications to move beyond augmenting vision and expand to other parts of the body.

“Imagine audio cues through an earpiece or sneakers vibrating wherever your friends are,” van der Klein said. “We need to keep an open eye for future possibilities, and I think a contact lens is just part of it.”

Microsoft says no plans for Zune HD in France, other markets still up in the air

Those in the U.S. may finally be getting their hands on the Zune HD next week, but it looks like folks elsewhere could well be in for a longer wait than they may have been hoping for. That’s been the speculation since the device was first announced, of course, but Microsoft is only now getting a bit more specific about the matter, with Microsoft France exec François Ruault telling PC World that the company has “no plans” to launch the Zune HD in France, although he adds that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll never be released there. That presumably also means that the rest of Europe is similarly up in the air, but if past history is any indication, it seems likely that the Zune HD will indeed land there eventually, sometime after it finally makes a trip north of the border.
