Fujitsu Esprimo Q1500: Core 2 Duo and Blu-ray in a laughably small form factor

My my, we’ve seen heatsinks bigger than this latest Esprimo Mini PC from Fujitsu. The Q1500 might look like your run-of-the-mill underpowered nettop, but its makers have successfully crammed a mobile Core 2 Duo CPU and a slot-loading Blu-ray drive inside to make one hell of an appealing little goer. 4GB of memory and a 320GB hard drive fill out the generous spec, and yes, there’s a HDMI out as well. Basically, you’re looking at a Timeline laptop adapted to the desktop, which would also suggest that the unknown Intel CPUs are of the CULV variety. Of course, all that grunt won’t come cheap and the base Core 2 Solo, DVD drive-packing option will start prices off at €699 ($998) when these hit Germany later this month.

New Website about Parks and Golf Courses

park.jpg

cjonline.com: People now can access information about parks and golf courses in Topeka and Shawnee County at one place – unwind.topeka.net.

The new website allows browsers to discover parks and other green spaces they may not have known about, said Barbara Hollingsworth, manager of product portfolio development for Topeka.net.

“Sometimes you don’t realize what is in your own backyard,” Hollingsworth said about the new site. “We hope people will use this as a resource to get out, get active and discover all of the thing they didn’t know Topeka had. As a parent, I think it’s cool because you can find all of the parks in town.”

The site has 103 park listings. Each listing is complete with photographs, the amenities available and a description of the park. “We have extended features on some of the more impressive amenities the parks have,” Hollingsworth said. “You can also get the latest listing of events that are going on at the parks. That should be a big asset for people.”

Samsung says it’s absolutely not pursuing SanDisk any longer, just listening to Blood on the Tracks for no reason

Not sure why Samsung felt the need to reassure investors and the SEC that it’s no longer pursuing SanDisk after its buyout offer was withdrawn back in November, but here we are, reading about it in the Wall Street Journal. Apparently the two companies signed a patent-licensing agreement in May, so we’d imagine that’s kept lines of communication open — but we have to warn you, Sammy: getting off that friends ladder ain’t exactly easy. Maybe it’s time to move on, you know?

CyberNotes: Offertrax Inc. Will Use RSS to Link Retailers and Shoppers

This article was written on July 21, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Free For All Friday

The entire concept of RSS (Really Simply Syndication) is growing in all forms as people are slowly becoming aware of such a concept. Offertrax, a startup Web 2.0 company is using RSS to connect consumers and merchants with trusted rules of engagement. Using RSS, consumers will be able to get information from stores about sales, inventory, etc. to give them a simplified shopping experience.

Offertrax

According to Ronald C. Pruett, CEO and co-founder, ‘Offertrax will make online buying for merchants and consumers a social experience, less time-consuming, and extremely targeted’ Additionally, ‘RSS technology will dramatically impact the way people buy and sell online because it enables consumers to control how they would like to be alerted by merchants. In addition, customers can post notes and reviews while commenting and sharing with their friends and social networks. Offertrax will help build an entirely new channel of online marketing that will enhance email, search marketing, and personalization systems currently implemented by merchants’.

Such a large percentage of Internet users are unaware of RSS and what it is. Those who have discovered RSS have found a great tool to simplify their lives. Few people really understand the power of RSS and how it will change the way we receive and sort through the information that is important to us.

Offertrax is using web-based services which allow merchants to offer ’subscriptions’ to consumers so that consumers are able to track only the items that interest them. Furthermore, Offertrax will allow consumers to share the offers that they have ‘tracked’ to lead others to the same purchases based upon their ‘trails’ via the web, mobile phone, or other handheld devices.

This would be a free service for consumers. They plan to generate revenue by charging businesses a fee to use the system. Offertrax is expected to release the first product in August and have announced their initial round of funding from private investors. CyberNet News looks forward to the release of Offertrax and will provide updates as Offertrax progresses!

HTC Touch HD2 to be an Android set?

Fanboys the world over swooned over the HTC Touch HD when it launched last year, but word is that HTC’s planning on making a major change to its high-res handset for the sequel: it’s switching to Android. That’s at least the hot whisper ’round the tubes this afternoon, and while that would ordinarily be enough to make the ‘droidboys to go crazy, there’s even more — the CPU is reportedly a 628MHz Qualcomm chip, not the slightly overtaxed 528MHz number we’ve seen in every other Android handset to date. Sure, it’s just a measly 100MHz, but if that’s enough to make Sense and HD video on the 3.8-inch 480 x 800 display run smoothly we’ll be all grins. If any of this is true, that is.

Hands-on with The Beatles: Rock Band

On September 9, classic rock fans will have a chance to strap on a plastic guitar and jam along with the biggest act in popular music history.

Artfully orchestrated buzz has been building for The Beatles: Rock Band since the start of 2009, and the team of developer Harmonix and publisher MTV Games (and distribution partner EA) hope to provide a bright spot in an otherwise drab video game market with one of the few video game products for the 2009 holiday season that has a real chance of appealing beyond core gamers.

We’ve gotten our hands on a final retail version of the game (minus the new Beatles-inspired instruments, but our old Rock Band gear worked fine), and gave it a test drive in CNET’s AV Lab. Check out this video to see our extremely shaky music skills, and read our hands-on impressions below.

Dan:

Music aside, this is essentially the same Rock Band game you’ve been playing for two years, but with nicely done overhauls of the menus, graphics, and interface, including some very cool animated Beatles segments. The biggest change to the actual gameplay is the inclusion of three-part vocal harmonies (you’ll need three USB mics). We found out the hard way that these songs are actually pretty tough to sing, and nailing the harmonies is even tougher.

Video: webOS 1.2 in action, LED notifications just a hack away

Palm might have tried to bottle up that webOS 1.2 leak the other day, but it looks like it was to no avail — videos of the new build in action have hit YouTube, and the hacking community has already ripped the code apart and found some new features. Just like we’d heard, the browser’s been updated and there’s revised and improved copy / paste functionality, but the big new feature seems to be email searching, which Pre owners have longed for since day one. Hidden deeper, it seems like the LEDs in the gesture area can be enabled for notifications by tweaking just a few lines of code, and there’s also the somewhat disconcerting addition of remote app kill switch for Palm, which would apparently let it delete apps anytime it wants. We’re sure this is just a cover-your-ass move as Palm prepares to open up the App Catalog — and it’s not exactly unprecedented — but it’s still a little disconcerting given how closely Palm seems to be monitoring Pre usage to begin with. Oh, but come on, let’s turn that frown upside-down — video of new features after the break.

AT&T yanks BlackBerry Bold visual voicemail software update

Hope you Bold owners out there managed to snag AT&T’s BlackBerry Bold visual voicemail software update while it lasted, because an internal memo leaked to BGR says it’s been pulled due to compatibility problems with “network enhancements being deployed.” That sounds to us like there’s an issue with either those 850MHz 3G rollouts or whatever black magic Ma Bell’s doing to get iPhone MMS up and running, but either way, it’s one more fire for AT&T’s engineers to put out while its customers sit around waiting.

Update: AT&T just sent us their official word on the matter — and they also told us it has nothing to do with MMS or 850. Check it out after the break.

FujiFilm Real 3D camera given a video hands-on by fake 3D journalists

The first thing you notice about FujiFilm’s €499 Real 3D W1 camera is its size. It’s big — big in the way that bloggers see main stream media journalists as big. And the industrial design is straight-up Cold War. Still, it delivers 3D without special glasses and does so with surprisingly realistic detail — it really does work. Yeah, you have to position yourself oh so carefully just in front of FujiFilm’s €349 FinePix 3D Viewer or printed photos courtesy of a FujiFilm web service, but the novelty might be worthwhile for those with money to burn. It begins shipping to Europe and likely beyond in late September. Check the video demonstration from IFA and let Germania wash over you.

Sony hedges on plans for PS3 update to enable 3D gaming on old titles

It’s not a straight up rebuttal, but apparently Sony corporate is singing a different tune than what we heard from a Sony rep on the floor of IFA (multiple times) the other day: that all existing PS3 games would be playable in 3D after the software update next year. According to Sony, it’s “conducting a technological investigation” as to the possibility of this, but claims there’s “no plan for the market launch of this at this time.” It makes sense that many titles — especially ones designed with widely divergent game engines — would be incompatible with a simple software update, but details are slim on how Sony is adding this function to its own games in the first place, so we’ll have to wait to find out more. We do know the PS3 is going 3D in 2010, but as for available titles it looks like we’re going to be in the dark for the time being — though Ubisoft’s upcoming Avatar game, along with a couple of Sony racing titles, are already shoe-ins for 3D presentation of some form.
