250GB PS3 shows up for pre-order on Amazon.co.uk, ships on October 1

In what has become the “hip cool thing to do” for consoles these days, the 250GB version of the PS3 Slim is up for pre-order in the UK before it’s been even confirmed by Sony for most of the world. Sadly, it’s just the boring old black version — so far the white PS3 Slim has only been seen making nice with Final Fantasy XIII in Japan — but at £285 (about $455 US) it is more than double the capacity for only 40 more “quid” than the original PS3 Slim. Pre-orders are available now, and Amazon says the console will ship on October 1. So the question is, do you jump in now, or do you wait for one of the myriad 250GB bundles headed for Europe? It’s the moral dilemma of our times.

Rumors of a Pre-less Verizon “off base” according to analysts

A dubious rumor from The Street floating around about how Verizon was snubbing the Pre due to lackluster sales and no outlet for its VCast Store (which was a bit too thin to make it onto these virtual pages, in fact) has been questioned by a couple of analysts today. According to Deutsche Bank’s Jonathan Goldberg and Morgan Keegan & Co’s Tavis McCourt, a combination of supply chain orders and Palm’s own 2010 financial projections — not to mention Verizon’s long history with Palm — all point to a Pre launch on Verizon early next year, as previously rumored by the WSJ and confirmed by Verizon itself in July. Jonathan specifically called the new rumor “off base” and “incorrect,” while Tavis says that “We do not have insight as to the marketing support Palm will get from Verizon, but we see little risk in not getting a placement at this carrier.” Analyst fight!

Amazon now offering Palm Pre for $99.99

(Credit: Screenshot by Bonnie Cha/CNET)

The Palm Pre got a nice little $50 price cut when Palm introduced its second WebOS device, the Palm Pixi. Sprint now offers the Pre for $149.99 with a two-year contract and $100 mail-in rebate, but there’s a better deal to be …

Intel’s Moblin 2.1 to compete with Windows

Could Intel’s new Moblin 2.1 OS make a dent against Windows in the mobile and desktop markets?

At this week’s Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, the chipmaker debuted a beta version of its Moblin 2.1 open-source operating system targeted to run on a variety of devices, including smartphones, Netbooks, nettops, Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), and in-car systems.

Moblin 2.1 will compete with other open-source operating systems like Google’s Android and bump up against Microsoft in the burgeoning nettop arena.

Originally developed for Netbooks, Moblin 2.1 (short for mobile Linux) will come in three flavors–one for handhelds, another for Netbooks, and a third for nettops.

In the market for handheld gadgets such as smartphones and MIDs, Moblin 2.1 will run on Atom chip-based devices. The beta demoed by Intel at IDF showed off capabilities for touch-screen and gesture input. The new interface will also let users switch among different open applications and will provide shortcuts to social-networking apps.

The Moblin 2.1 Web browser will also support Flash and Microsoft’s Silverlight 3 technology to run interactive Web-based apps.

Vertu announces Constellation Ayxta flip phone for the discerning, friendless traveler

Vertu’s not known for making cut rate electronics, so this is probably the closest it’ll ever come. The company’s just unveiled its latest flip phone, the Constellation Ayxta. The Ayxta is aimed at citizens of the world who are looking for a “high quality product to assist in maintaining their standard of living wherever they may be,” — i.e., lazy people who’d rather throw money at something than figure out what to do on their own on a Friday night in Vienna. We can sympathize — sort of. To that end, the handset will be kitted with all manner of awesomeness, including Vertu’s own Concierge service which puts you on the line with a customer service representative directly — no hold required. Users will also get access to Vertu Select — which, as we said before, will help you out and tell you where all the cool people are in whatever one horse town you happen to be in at the moment. It’s got 3G and a micros SD slot for up to 8GB of storage, plus a 3.0 megapixel cam with integrated flash (which is always nice), but other than that it’s pretty unimpressive. The Constellation Ayxta is available in Europe now, and for a very affordable €4,900 to €6,500 — somewhere in the neighborhood of $7,000 – $10,500.

Palm Pre $99 on Amazon

Looking for a good excuse to buy a new Palm Pre? If the whole Verizon fallout thing from earlier today wasn’t enough to push you over the edge, perhaps this will: Amazon has started selling the phone for $99, that’s down from its already lowered price of $149.

All with a two-year service plan from Sprint, naturally.

Samsung’s Instinct HD lands itself a quick video hands-on

At this point we’re a little bored of the Instinct HD leaks, especially now that it’s been saddled with that hefty $250 pricetag, but how about a detailed video hands-on for olde tymes sake? Interestingly, on video we’re shown the location of the mythic HDMI out port, though it’s covered up by a flap, and we’d say that in motion the phone doesn’t look as terribly chubby as those blurry photos made it out to be — who says TV adds 10 pounds? Video is after the break.

[Thanks, Taylor]

Report: Verizon Snubbed Palm Pre

Holding off on buying a Palm Pre until the smartphone hits Verizon? You may be waiting a long while. Word is that the wireless carrier has turned down the opportunity to support the first WebOS handset, a deal that was set to go into effect in January of next year.

This is all very backroom-type stuff. The Street is citing a number of anonymous sources who told the site that Verizon was less than enthusiastic about the Palm Pre’s performance thus far. The other deal killer was Palm’s unwillingness to stick VCast on the device, which, let’s face it, sounds like the Verizon we all know and sometimes tolerate.

The addition of Verizon’s propriety walled garden software wouldn’t really mesh with the app store than Palm has been pushing on the device in

ASUS Eee Top ET2002T and ET2203T touchscreen all-in-ones land in October

Looks like we’ve got ourselves another Windows 7 launch, folks. The Eee Top ET2002 and ET2203, which have graced these pages with their touchscreens before, have ironed out an all-too-familiar launch date (October 22nd) and some fairly competitive Europe prices, weighing in at £559 and £819, respectively. That’s roughly $893 and $1,312 US, but usually the UK to US conversion on these is dramatically less than the true conversion rate (though we feel rather bad for the folks in the UK, in our own patronizing, American sort of way). Either way we’re happy to see NVIDIA ION popping up again, and the whole concept of a low-end touchscreen PC is certainly intriguing with Windows 7 along for the ride.

Rumor: New iMac Coming Soon

Apple is likely ready to continue its forward march of slight system upgrades with the launch of a new refreshed iMac line. Word on the street (read: Taiwanese factory floor) is that the company is ready to introduce the updated all-in-one “as early as this month,” which doesn’t really include that many more days.

According to Apple Insider, the systems will be run a dual-core processor, be cheaper than their predecessor and will feature a new, thinner design. Beyond that, the rumored details are pretty scarce.
