Slew of Pine Trail packing portables announced, processor release slated for early Jan?

Slew of Pine Trail packing portables announced, processor release slated for early Jan?Remember that lone Pine Trail nettop that was spotted yesterday morning? That wasn’t the only next-gen Atom product that KND had up its sleeve — not by a long shot. The company has an array of netbooks, nettops, and one hybrid combination of the two displayed on its website, all captured in tiny little pictures like the one you see to the right. On the low end there’s the K116, an 11.6-inch netbook with an N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 250GB hard disk. Two nettops are planned, including the K185 we saw yesterday as well as the K19W with its 19-inch, 1440 x 900 screen, dual-core Atom D510 processor, 2GB of RAM, and again a 250GB hard disk. Finally there’s the middle-man, the K133 netbook that shares its specs with the K19W, but is included in a 13.3-inch laptop form. All are spec’d out at the read link below, but none with prices or ship dates. The latest word on the Pine Trail platform release is that the N450 chips will be let loose on January 3, and that several devices will be shipping on that very same day. You can probably connect the dots as well as we can.

Nyko Wii Wands get a dash of color

Just as Nintendo finally decides to bring some of that noir goodness over to the US, Nyko pops up with no less than four new colorways for its Wand Wii remote. We’re no anthropologists here, but we reckon one of these new options will do a lot better in sales than the other three. All the same, with Nintendo furnishing Japan with blue and pink Wiimotes, Nyko has played it safe and followed suit. These should be hitting Walmart right about now with an MSRP of $29.99, so look out for them at your next government-sponsored Wii bowl-a-thon.

Scarab: A Roomba For The Mean City Streets

robot-harvester-for-pedestrian-areas

Could street-cleaners someday be replaced by robots? Olga Kalugina thinks so, and has designed the Scarab, an oversized, outdoor Roomba, to do it.

The Scarab would first be deployed in shopping malls where it could easily cruise, clean and polish the smooth floors, but we see a day when robots scour the sidewalks for trash and keep our streets sparkling clean.

Looking like a giant vacuum cleaner, the Scarab uses a pair of webcams to seek out mess and then brushes the trash into an internal tank, which it can empty by itself. It also has a grabber-arm to pick up larger items — discarded Slurpee cups, for example, and runs on electricity instead of an engine like many manually operated street-sweepers.

The big problem, though, is that while a Roomba is safe inside your house, Kalugina’s concept design would be out amongst ranks of terrifying teenagers, bent on teasing the poor machine or even just kicking its face in. Stick this out into the real mean city streets and you’d lose the entire fleet in days, stolen and repurposed or just sold. No, a real street-smart robot would need some kind of defense. A taser, perhaps, or at the very least an electrified shell.

And there you have it. The perfect street cleaning robot would in fact be R2D2. We welcome the future.

Performance showdown: Windows 7 vs. Snow Leopard

Snow Leopard consistently beats Windows 7 in many general performance areas.

(Credit:
Dong Ngo/CNET)

As someone who uses both platforms for work and personal entertainment, I’ve been wanting to do a performance comparison between Windows 7 and Mac OS X since I first got my hands on the Windows 7 RTM (the final build of the OS) more than two months ago, but decided to wait until I could compare the two apples to apples. (No pun intended.)

The right time seems to be now, as Snow Leopard has been out for a while and has even been updated to 10.6.1, and Windows 7 has been at the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) vendors for almost three months and has also had a few updates. Furthermore, Boot Camp 3.0 seemed to make Windows run better than ever on a Mac.

First Microsoft Store May Open for Windows 7’s Arrival

Ready for sprawling aisles of Microsoft stuff, a guru bar, and giant wall-sized screens? The first store in Scottsdale, Arizona is receiving its final touches, and may open on, or just after Oct 22, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The paper says the Scottsdale store will look just like the freaky fake shop Microsoft built on its Redmond campus back in January. Also, a second store in Mission Viejo, California is expected to follow in the immediate weeks after.

Ahh, the glitz and the glam. The paper confirms the floorplan will showcase everything form Windows 7 to WinMo 6.5 and the Xbox 360. And yep, there will be a 94-inch screen for folks to play on.

And Apple isn’t the only inspiration. The Microsoft stores will also be close to either a Best Buy or Wal-Mart. Oh, and the Microsoft store head-honcho was actually poached from Wal-Mart. I think I was more optimistic when I heard they were head-hunting Apple Store staff. [Wall Street Journal]

Sustainable Undies

Triplepundit: Google the words “sustainable+underwear” and you’ll find a surprisingly large number of hits–566,000 as of today. That’s probably a good omen for Jason Kibbey and Jeff Denby, who recently launched PACT, an underwear company that is designing and manufacturing drawers with a conscious.

PACT is a story of three’s: three styles (thong, bikini, boy short for girls; trunk, boxer brief and boxer for boys), three prints and three causes. The startup is working with three different non-profit organizations, after which it has named three fabric prints.

Purchase a pair of unmentionables in the 826 National print and PACT gives 10 percent of the sale to 826 National, the nationwide literacy advocacy group spun out of 826 Valencia’s Dave Egger’s education joint in San Francisco. Same goes for the Oceana print. It benefits Oceana, which is working to clean the world’s oceans and protect their inhabitants.

Rich Boy’s Toys: $24,000 Donut-Shaped Party Boat

irev

Looking startlingly like a flying saucer, the Interactive Recreational Entertainment Vessel (iREV) is in fact a luxury party-boat, in the shape of a donut.

The bobbing boat seats ten people and has a charcoal grill in the center and optional 500 Watt music system with satellite radio. To putt-putt out to the center of the lake you have an electric outboard motor which will run for around 8-10 hours, and a giant umbrella stops you from getting sunburned.

How much? $24,000. I’d rather shift the party a few yards to the side, onto the shore, and save roughly $23,900 of that, but then I’m cheap. Or rather, not dumb enough to waste my money on such an obvious rich-boy showoff toy. Those of you who disagree can try to hunt down the product on the company site, which spends most of its time talking up the credentials of the business partners and mentions nothing about the iREV itself. ([cough] vaporware [cough]).

Microsoft store opening October 22nd, insides revealed?

Imagine for a second that you’re Microsoft: unimaginably rich, a bit bloated after years on the Office hog, and worried about a few big projects you’ve been meaning to finish if only you could find the time. Now, what day would you choose to launch your brick-and-mortar stores back into retail if you were David Porter, vice president of retail stores and former Wal-Mart exec? If it was us, we’d choose October 22nd, the official Windows 7 launch. That’s exactly what a number of tipsters are telling us courtesy of an in-person briefing by Kevin Turner, Microsoft’s COO. Specifically, the Scottsdale store will swing the doors wide on the 22nd, we’re not sure about the Mission Viejo location. According to the Wall Street Journal, the stores will sell Windows-based laptops and cellphones and allow consumers to play Xbox 360 games on a 94-inch in-store screen. It’ll even have a Genius Bar “counter” where people can bring their Microsoft gear for help. In fact, the WSJ claims that the Scottsdale store interior is a “nearly exact replica” of the store created on Redmond’s campus — something we covered back in January (pics in the gallery below). Who knows, this could be the beginning of www.peopleofmicrosftstore.com as Internet trends go.

Zero off-road electric motorcycles get recalled, might crash more than usual

The Zero S our own Tim Stevens rode fearlessly through the streets of New York apparently isn’t effected, but it looks like Zero’s off-road electric motorcycles (the Zero X and Zero MX) have been hit with a recall after it was discovered that they might crash when it’s not entirely the driver’s fault. Turns out the throttle can get stuck in the open position or become disconnected, and that the “Easy” or “0-25” modes can “unexpectedly” lead to full power when the bike is turned on — both what you might call “bad things.” Of course, this is a fairly small recall (some 200 vehicles), but if that includes you, you’ll want to get in touch with Zero to arrange for a free repair. Hit up the link below for all the necessary details.
