Windows 7 party pack fittingly arrives on party-filled Cayman Islands

Well, would you look at that? With the launch of Microsoft’s next operating system merely 21 days away (give or take a few hours based on time zone), the Redmond giant seems to be proactively sending out Win7 Launch Party packs already. The first “unboxing” we’ve seen comes to us from a most unusual spot, one that Microsoft wasn’t actually equipped to ship to when the program first started. After a stern email or two sent over several bodies of water and through countless Stimulus-inspired road construction hang-ups, the bundle you see laid out above landed in the beautiful Cayman Islands. Within was a Steve Ballmer Signature Edition of Win7 (so, we’re up to seven versions now?), a pack of Win7 playing cards, a poster, some napkins (to wipe the drool from your friends’ faces after they experience Aero Shake for the first time) and even a puzzle. So, should we book a flight to Grand Cayman, Little Cayman or Cayman Brac? This is one shindig we definitely won’t miss.

[Thanks, Jared]

‘Windows 7 Compatible’ is Microsoft’s way of approving peripherals for launch

(Credit: Microsoft)

Logos and logo stickers are a big deal for companies about to make a big push on a new product, and forgive us for getting this one wrong. Microsoft’s Windows 7 Compatible program, which labels qualified products as being Microsoft-approved to work with Windows 7, is designed

Android 1.6 update now official for T-Mobile G1 and myTouch 3G

Donuts for everyone! Well, not everyone — but as we’d heard, at least some G1 and myTouch 3G owners on T-Mobile USA are now being blessed with an official Android 1.6 build over the air. The carrier says it has “begun delivery,” which we take means it’s not all happening at once; that’s the way the 1.5 rollout was handled, so it really doesn’t come as a surprise. Keep checking for that update notification, folks.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Sony says Nazi PS3 ad is a “mock campaign” and not real

We can’t say this was unexpected, but Sony just pinged us to say that that Nazi PS3 ad is “totally fake” and was made without their approval — here’s the statement from the executive president of BBDO Chile, which made the ads:

This creative design did not involve and was never approved by Sony Computer Entertainment or Sony. This “mock campaign” was developed by BBDO Chile staff and was submitted to various creative competitions/festivals without prior notification or approval from SCE/Sony, and it is not representative of the views or advertising policies of SCE/Sony. BBDO Chile apologizes for using this creative concept without authorization or prior approval, and for its misrepresentation of the PlayStation brand and its values.

Settles that, we suppose — although we’re guessing BBDO Chile isn’t going to be Sony’s agency of record very much longer.

Prizefight: iPod Touch vs. Zune HD

Prizefight

The CNET Prizefight you’ve been waiting for is here: Zune HD vs. iPod Touch. Just like the Thunderdome (minus Tina Turner and the post-apocalyptic wasteland), two portable media players will enter the ring, but only one may leave.

And for the first time, dear CNET readers, our Prizefight page …

ASUS intros first ‘Marine Cool’ motherboard, the SABERTOOTH 55i

ASUS is good for canning concepts just before they’ve had a chance to truly thrive, but thankfully the company has made an obvious effort to bring its “Marine Cool” mainboard to life. After peeking said device at CeBIT earlier this year, the SABERTOOTH 55i has become the first actual, working product to be based around the technology. The newly-developed TUF series is designed to handle “extreme conditions,” and while ASUS claims that it’ll survive “military-style testing,” we wouldn’t recommend submerging it under liquid or blasting it with a railgun. For those looking to piece together a new Core i5 / Core i7 rig, feel free to give the read link a look for all the details, but don’t bother searching high and low for a price or release date.

Helix Wind launching wind-powered cellphone tower trials in US and Africa

Helix Wind, a company that produces some very distinctive-looking wind turbines, is getting ready to start new trials in the US and Africa. These trials will involve testing the vertical wind turbines as a source of power for cellphone towers in areas where they may be off the grid, and carry much higher operating costs. The turbines should produce enough energy to power the cellphone towers, and pay for themselves within about six months. The trials are set to start at the end of the month with local Nigerian provider Eltek NSG as a main participant.

Artist finds muse in others’ ‘Missed Connections’

"I hope at their best they are beautiful, funny, warm, poignant, odd, and memorable," Sophie Blackall says of the paintings in her Missed Connections series.

(Credit: Sophie Blackall)

OK, so your “Missed Connection” post on Craigslist never led to a great romance with that cute hipster who looked your way on the L train–let alone an e-mail from anyone vaguely resembling her. But those hopeful words you sent out into the ether may not be lost after all.

Brooklyn illustrator Sophie Blackall is immortalizing Missed Connections posts in the form of some pretty wonderful and whimsical paintings. And who knows? Maybe your note to that girl with the nose ring and headphones is now a work of art.

“Messages in bottles, smoke signals, letters written in the sand; the modern equivalents are the funny, sad, beautiful, hopeful, hopeless, poetic posts on Missed Connections Web sites,” Blackall writes on her blog. “Every day hundreds of strangers reach out to other strangers on the strength of a glance, a smile or a blue hat. Their messages have the lifespan of a butterfly. I’m trying to pin a few of them down.”

Her original paintings, created with Chinese ink and watercolor, measure about 11 inches by 17 inches and have names like “Hairy Bearded Swimmer,” “I Had a Blue Hat,” and “Seeking Girl Who Bit Me TWICE Last Night While We Were Dancing.”

Blackall sells 8.5 inch by 11 inch prints of her illustrations for $40 (with free shipping) on crafts site Etsy and plans to release a book based on the series in 2012.

The Eyeball Gets an Upgrade

Eyeball.jpg
Blue Microphone’s attractively old school webcam gets an upgrade today with the release of the Eyeball 2.0. Buyers will now get a higher-quality lens, a 2 megapixel (1600 x 1200 pixel) resolution, and a premium optical sensor.

The webcam’s design has stayed the same and it still offers driverless installation, so that it’s completely plug-and-play for Windows and Macintosh computers. Also, the HD lens itself can still retract into the microphone unit, so that you’re assured of privacy when you don’t want to broadcast. While it’s hard to tell by the picture, the Eyeball easily mounts on flat screen monitors.

You can pick up the Eyeball at Amazon, Apple stores, and Fry’s Electronics for a list price of $79.99. Visit the Blue Microphones site for more information.
