ASUS changes course, unveils ‘first’ USB 3.0 / SATA 6Gbps motherboards

Can it be? Has the same company that dashed dreams by axing its USB 3.0-laden P6X58 motherboard back in July really just revived our hope in humanity? Out of nowhere, ASUS has just unveiled the first range of motherboards to support USB 3.0 and the newest SATA specifications, the latter of which brings along 6Gbps data throughput. The one-two punch belongs to the Xtreme Design P7P55D-E series of mainboards, which support the latest Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Sadly, just two USB 3.0 ports are onboard, while a total of ten dedicated USB 2.0 sockets are scattered about. Feel free to pore over the detailed specs in the release past the break, and get ready to find the P7P55D-E Premium mobo ($299) and U3S6 expansion card ($29) at retailers next month.

Vizio is best-known for offering big screens at a low price, but the company’s latest offerings straddle that thin line between small TVs and computer monitors. Vizio announced the 23-inch VM230XVT ($400) and 19-inch VM19XVT ($350) Wednesday, with both sets utilizing LED-backlighting technology usually seen …

Albatron’s 42 inches of optical touch monitor get examined on video

While Dell and HP were busy holding a competition to see who could do a worse job of announcing their new optical multitouch displays, Albatron was crafting away a 42-inch monstrosity to completely steal their thunder. The optical part refers to a pair of CMOS sensors embedded in the bezel which are responsible for touch detection, a cheaper alternative to your typical capacitive and resistive tech, which requires an extra USB connection between the monitor and computer. Although some issues were found with Windows 7’s multitouch implementation, the promise of recognizing more than two fingers with the proper software support and the general responsiveness of the unit whet our appetite for more. Alas, nobody dares speak of a price, but a 1080p 22-inch model is already available for $450, in case you wanted to add to your touchy-feely shortlist. The video after the break contains the hands-on and a little mystery — why is there Bulgarian handwriting on the whiteboard in the background?

Video: Hands On with DJ Hero

DJ Hero - Bundle Contents - PS3.jpg

The PCMag labs changed from a cold, sterile place of work, to a
bumpin’ club yesterday as we tested Activision’s newest game: DJ
Hero
: Think Guitar Hero, but with a turntable instead of a guitar.
Needless to say, a lot of scratching, mixing, and sampling went down.

The testing has been rigorous. Being a big fan of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, I can easily say that DJ Hero is more difficult at first. It definitely takes some time to get the techniques down. A full review is on its way, but until then, check out the hands-on video after the jump. DJ Hero is available now for $119.99.

The 404 455: Where we get Annalytical with Anna David

The lovely and brilliant Anna David joins the show today to fill Justin’s diminutive shoes. Pray for him. He’s still not feeling too well. Our beautiful new co-host tells us about her new Web site Annalytical Answers, where she answers your questions about dating, love and–yes–S. E. X. Wilson can barely contain himself.

Look! She's using a computer. That's tech!

(Credit:
Eric Fischer)

Before we dive headlong into the questions that have continued to perplex men for millennia, Anna and the crew share stories about the post office and how no one there can smile. We think it’s an actual work rule. Justin and Wilson vie for the affection of any lady that ventures onto The 404. In Anna’s case, the win and subsequent fail goes to Justin. Justin, who ignores a question about a printer from a hot woman AND he’s the printer expert? When is that really ever going to happen again? For shame, Justin, for shame.

We can’t recap them all, but we spend most of the show with Anna answering questions from the chat room about dating. Some memorable questions: How do you get out of the friend zone? Does long distance dating ever work out? Is it really OK to date a cougar? Be sure to send in your questions.

All that and more on today’s lovely show. If you want your dating questions answered, head on over to Annalytical Answers and sign up! In the mean time, we wish Justin a speedy recovery and be sure to check back for more 404 madness.

SonyStyle unleashes Sony Ericsson Aino in the US for $600

Though it may not have the most elegant name in the world, we’ve got to give Sony Ericsson’s Aino credit for at least one thing: it’s officially launching in the US, unlocked, just a few short months after being announced. You’ll be paying a stout $599.99 for the privilege of putting one in your pocket, but in exchange, you’ll get an 8.1 megapixel sensor, Remote Play support, tri-band HSPA, and WiFi on a 432 x 240 display. You’re not just getting the phone for that outlay, though: SE also throws in a stereo Bluetooth headset, dock, and an 8GB microSD (yes, microSD, not Memory Stick, mercifully) card. It’s still showing as backordered on SonyStyle’s website, but you should be able to find this in stock both online and in Sony’s stores across the land very shortly. Follow the break for the full release.

Desktop Icon Position Save Restore

This article was written on August 14, 2007 by CyberNet.

Desktop IconsDesktop icons seem to have a mind of their own, and when you least expect it they will popup in different positions. This happens all the time when I plug my laptop into a second monitor since the two screens have a different resolutions.

There are some things that you can do to save the position of your icons, and quickly be able to restore them back to their rightful state. The How-To Geek posted a great tip today on how to do this the easy way. I’ve actually been using tweak since back in the early days of XP (for at least 5 years now) and is probably one of the oldest sites that still resides in my bookmarks. I had originally found it on a site called NTHelp, and the "hack" has been a must-have addition all these years for me (on both XP and Vista).

All you have to do is download the two files, either from NTHelp or How-To Geek, and copy the Layout.dll into your C:’Windows’System32’ directory. Then double-click on Layout.reg to have the contents of the file imported into your registry, and now you’re all set. You can now save and restore the position of your desktop icons simply by right-clicking on the Computer option in your Start Menu:

Desktop Icon Position Saver

The only problem with this is that it can’t remember multiple "profiles" for your desktop icons. Having multiple profiles that you can switch between would be nice for anyone that hooks their laptop up to several different monitors that all have different resolutions (work, home, standalone, etc…). The program I’ve always recommended to people in that situation is Shock Desktop (XP/2000/2003/Vista). It provides a System Tray icon that lets you create as many different profiles as you would like:

Desktop Icon Position

The program is completely free, and there is a version that comes with an installer as well as one without an installer. One of the unique features that it does actually have is the ability to bring your desktop icons in front of all the windows using an assignable hotkey. You’ll no longer have to minimize all your windows to get to your desktop icons! I’ve had problems with this working on Vista, but on XP it is a nice addition.

Tip: You can also get to your desktop icons quickly in Windows by pressing the Windows Key + D. This will minimize all your open windows, and pressing the same key combination will restore all of the windows that were just minimized.

Motorola DROID spotted in fine GSM form (video)

While the newly launched DROID is keeping us plenty busy, we’d be remiss if we didn’t hep you to this hands-on video that’s recently popped up on the YouTubes. Of Vietnamese origin, we do believe that this is the first GSM version of the phone we’ve caught on tape. All seems to be going well until about 2 minutes 7 seconds, when the viewer encounters a considerable lag in between gesturing to open the app drawer and the event itself. But don’t take our word for it — see for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, Vincenzo]
