Samsung and Uni-Pixel team up for better, cheaper TMOS displays

Uni-Pixel has developed a new display technology that could succeed LCD and LED displays, and if all goes according to plan we might see something come to market as soon as next year. Opcuity uses one layer of MEMS film in in a TMOS (multiplexed optical shutter) device for results that are said to be ten times brighter and sixty percent cheaper to manufacture than LCDs (which use five layers). Since TMOS displays are very similar to LCDs, existing manufacturing lines can be used — lowering start-up costs and rescuing older assembly lines in the process. According to the company’s CFO, the manufacturing process “subtracts from existing LCD lines–you just need to remove some equipment that is no longer needed.” Samsung and Uni-Pixel have teamed up to produce 4-inch displays using the technology, but who knows? Maybe Microsoft Research’s interactive office will become a reality sooner than you think.

Real Desktop… Remember BumpTop?

Real Desktop Do you remember back in 2006 when a 3D desktop called BumpTop was buzzing around the Internet? A prototype was supposed to be available “soon,” and the middle of last year we were awestruck once again when BumpTop was demonstrated at the TED Conference. Here we are a year and a half later and we’re still not able to download it.

Hope is not lost though! A new product, called Real Desktop, aims to do what we expected from BumpTop. You can drag/throw your icons around to relieve some anger organize the desktop, and the surface is reflective to add some extra eye candy.

Performance wise it’s not bad, and the system requirements are pretty reasonable. I just don’t feel like a program like this is for me. I’m normally a sucker for eye candy, but not when it affects my productivity. I think this is one of those things that you show your friends, and then don’t really use after that.

It costs $26 (can be installed on 3 computers) if you want all of the bells and whistles, otherwise a freeware version will ease the burden on your pocketbook. Real Desktop will run on both Windows XP and Vista.

Canon 1D Mark IV: The $5000 New King of Cameras

The videos are out, and now so’s the camera: $5000 buys you a 16MP DSLR that shoots at a whopping 102,400ISO with a new 45-point autofocus system, 10fps bursts, and oh yeah—suck it D3s, incredible 1080p video.

The 1D Mark IV uses an APS-H-sized 16-megapixel sensor that’s “similar in size to a Super 35mm motion picture film frame” with a 1.3x crop factor (so not full-frame, booo) , and a normal ISO range of 100 to 12,800, with expanded going up to 102,400 ISO (like Nikon’s fresh D3s). The new 45-point autofocus system has 39 cross-type points and uses a new AI Servo II AF predictive focusing algorithm that’s supposed to be faster, which is handy, since it shoots in 10fps bursts.

But, let’s talk about video, which Canon isn’t too shy of making the star of this camera: You get full manual exposure control, stereo mic input, and 1080p video at 24, 25 or 30fps; 720p and standard def at 50 or 60fps; and the samples, while obviously Canon-vetted, so far look seriously amazing (that’s a link to a full-res1080p stream of the video above, by Vincent Laforet).

There’s a new auto-lighting optimizer that automatically adjusts contrast and brightness in-camera that sounds sorta like Nikon’s Active D-Lighting. And hurray, a new white balance algorithm that’s better at low color temperatures, something that Nikon’s typically been better with in the past.

It’s coming out in December for $5000. Man, pro DSLRs just got way more interesting again. Six-digit ISO speeds, extreme low-light performance , high-def video: It’s a war.

New 45-Point Autofocus System

The more than 50 Canon EF lenses compatible with the EOS-1D Mark IV give videographers incredible creative options, including an impressive selection of large-aperture professional L-series primes as well as zoom lenses, macro, Tilt-Shift and Fisheye optics. The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV allows for three video recording resolutions – 1080p Full HD and 720p HD in a 16:9 aspect ratio and Standard Definition (SD) in a 4:3 aspect ratio. The camera will record Full HD at 1920 x 1080 in selectable frame rates of 24p (23.976), 25p, or 30p (29.97); and 720p HD or SD video recording at either 50p or 60p (59.94). SD video can be recorded in either NTSC or PAL standards. Sound is recorded either through the internal monaural microphone or via optional external microphones connected to the stereo microphone input. The camera also provides an in-camera video editing function allowing users to remove the start or ending of a video clip directly in the camera to eliminate unwanted footage and speed up post-production.

Image Quality and Performance
The heart of the EOS-1D Mark IV camera’s outstanding image quality is a newly developed 16.1-Megapixel CMOS sensor featuring Canon’s latest and most advanced proprietary technologies. These technologies include improved photodiode construction to enhance dynamic range and gapless microlenses that are positioned closer to the photodiodes for improved light gathering efficiency. The transmissive quality of the color filter array has been enhanced to improve sensitivity. Canon has also upgraded the sensor circuitry to improve noise reduction before the image data is exported from the CMOS sensor to the rest of the image processing chain.

With 60 percent more pixels than the EOS-1D Mark III, the EOS-1D Mark IV Digital SLR employs Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors with approximately six times the processing power of DIGIC III for full 14-bit A/D conversion at 10 fps. High-speed continuous shooting up to 121 Large JPEGs is possible using a UDMA CF card. This camera also features three RAW shooting modes for versatility with Full RAW (approx. 16 million pixels), M-RAW (approx. nine million pixels), and S-RAW (approx. four million pixels). Three additional JPEG recording formats (M1, M2 and Small) are also available.

The 14-bit per channel conversion facilitated by the dual DIGIC 4 Processors provides smoother tonalities in final images capturing all 16,384 distinct tones in each channel (red, green and blue) at the full 10 fps frame rate. RAW images shot on the new Canon EOS-1D Mark IV use the entire 14-bit space when converted to 16-bit TIFF files in Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software, which is supplied with the camera at no extra charge. The 14-bit A/D conversion is also the foundation for Canon’s Highlight Tone Priority feature that takes maximum advantage of the camera’s extensive dynamic range to preserve detail in highlight areas of the image. Canon’s new EOS-1D Mark IV Digital SLR also features an improved white balance algorithm making colors more accurate when shooting under low color temperature light sources such as household tungsten lamps.

The EOS-1D Mark IV Digital SLR features Canon’s Peripheral Illumination Correction function which corrects darkening that can occur in the corners of images with most lenses when used at their largest apertures. When activated, it is automatically applied to JPEG images and video clips as they are shot. For RAW images, it can be applied in DPP software.

Other new features include a large three-inch solid structure Clear View II LCD screen with 920,000 dot/VGA resolution and a wide 160-degree viewing angle for enhanced clarity and more precise color when reviewing images and shooting video. The new in-camera copyright information feature helps professionals secure control over images by setting copyright data directly into the camera and appending that information to each image file in the Exif metadata. Additional features include a fluorine coating on the Low Pass Filter to further repel dust and enhance the EOS Integrated Cleaning System.

Minimize Post-Production with Enhanced Canon Auto Lighting Optimizer
Action photography truly is all about speed, capturing a fast subject with fast focusing and fast frame rates. However, all this speed might be wasted if it is slowed down by lengthy post-production procedures to adjust image quality. The EOS-1D Mark IV Digital SLR helps reduce post-production work with a powerful new Auto Lighting Optimizer (ALO) system. When enabled, Canon’s ALO automatically adjusts the image for optimal brightness and contrast on the fly during in-camera image processing, reducing clipped highlights while keeping shadowed areas as clear and detailed as they actually appear. By optimizing brightness and contrast in-camera, Canon’s ALO system significantly reduces the need for post-production image optimization, and gives photographers image quality they can take directly to press. Demanding professional photographers who tested ALO clearly stated that this one feature will reduce their post-production image optimization process by more than 75 percent. Canon’s ALO works with both RAW[i] and JPEG images as well as video recording.

Rugged Reliability
Canon has taken every measure to ensure that the EOS-1D Mark IV Digital SLR camera has the highest degree of weather resistance in the EOS line. The 1D Mark IV camera incorporates a wide range of design features that enhance its durability and reliability for professional assignments. For example, the 1D Mark IV’s body, chassis and lens mount are completely weather-resistant and 76 gaskets and seals surround all buttons and seams. The body covers and internal chassis, including the mirror box, are constructed with magnesium-alloy, one of the strongest and rigid metals available for its weight. For added strength, the lens mount is constructed with stainless steel. In fact, when used with Canon’s Speedlite 580EX II and/or most current L-series lenses, the entire camera system remains fully weather resistant, so professionals can concentrate on getting the shot instead of worrying about protecting their gear.

New Wireless Connectivity
Canon is announcing the availability of the new WFT-E2 II A* wireless file transmitter exclusively for the EOS-1D Mark IV Digital SLR camera. The WFT-E2 II A wireless transmitter is an extremely small and versatile device that offers professional photographers a wide range of digital connectivity options including IEEE802.11a/b/g and Ethernet, ideal for commercial and studio work. In addition to adding the ability to connect to wireless networks over 802.11a, the new WFT-E2 II A adds a wealth of new professional features to the photographer’s tool kit. The new Camera Linking feature allows a single photographer to simultaneously fire up to 10 cameras remotely; and the updated WFT Server mode lets you remotely use Live View, control settings, and fire the EOS-1D Mark IV over the internet from anywhere in the world using a standard Web browser or many Web-enabled smart phones. Additionally, geotagging is now possible via Bluetooth, using compatible GPS devices to append coordinate data to the images.

Pricing and Availability

Apple 3×3 access point hits the FCC with 5.8GHz bands

The FCC did let one Apple product through to its online database tonight, although nothing that’ll excite you quite like magical mice or revved up iMacs. Instead we’re looking at models A1354 and A1355, a pair of 802.11 a/b/g/n 3×3 access points with the exact same, nondescript label picture that indicates some heft to the unit. There’s not much to say here, although the A1354 had a revision on the antenna gain in the 5.8GHz band. At this point it’s just another thing to add to that penciled-in list of rumored Apple announcements for tomorrow morning.

MMS for iPhone 2G and tethering on OS 3.1.2 explained, not for the faint of heart

Let’s be clear upfront that this isn’t for the casual iPhone jailbreaker, but if you feeling like living on the edge, you can give your original model an added boost of MMS capability, or any device with OS 3.1.2 the power to tether. Highlighted in a series of tweets today by iPhone dev team lead MuscleNerd, whiterat (for MMS) and two-bit (for tethering) will get the job done, but both require tinkering with the baseband, which is exponentially more advanced and brick-inducing than, say, installing Cydia. Flip Mino HD Review: If it Ain’t Broke…

Flip’s followup to the successful, caveman-easy Mino HD is fundamentally the same product, slightly better. The improvements are welcome, but there are still some issues I wish Flip would address.

The original Mino HD was one of the simplest, easiest-to-use pocket cams out there. Its video quality was nothing to write home about (and paled in comparison to, say, the Kodak Zi8), but it sold boatloads based on its good looks and respectable performance. So what does the new Mino HD bring to the table?

What’s New

The new Mino HD definitely feels better in the hand than its predecessor. It’s only marginally smaller (about 1.5 millimeters thinner, same width and height) but the upgrade to aluminum from glossy plastic makes it feel much more solid and expensive. The other improvements are welcome as well—the new screen is both larger (2 inches compared to 1.5) and significantly sharper, and it’s now packing 8GB of internal memory, twice that of the first Mino HD. That 8GB of memory allows for about two hours of 720p recording. Also new is an HDMI-out jack for sharing videos on HD screens, and it also boasts a faster processor (I didn’t see a difference in performance, but Flip says battery life is improved).

What’s Unchanged, but Shouldn’t Be

As it’s packing the same sensor as the first Mino HD, this new version shares the same strengths and suffers from the same flaws: Good in solid lighting and close-ups, but noisy in low-light and choppy while panning. It still can’t take stills, there’s no optical zoom, and there’s no image stabilizer. Also unchanged are those damn touch-sensitive buttons. I accidentally hit the “Play” touch-button several times because you don’t have to depress an actual, tactile button to make commands, which is super annoying. Tactile buttons would be a lot more accurate and result in less accidental presses.

As always, we should mention that the days of dedicated pocket cams like the Mino HD are numbered. They’re surrounded on all sides, with the iPod Nano hitting them from the low-end and smartphones hitting them from the high. Since convergence is already killing PMPs, we don’t see this kind of gadget lasting all that much longer. That being said…

The Flip Mino HD is a solid choice for a pocket cam, since it’s sort of the distillation of what the pocket cam category aims for: It’s dead simple, to a fault sometimes, takes decent but not amazing video, and is sleek and pocketable. We’d really have liked to see some improvements to the Mino HD’s sensor (as well as the merciless execution of those touch-buttons), but overall it’s still a pretty decent cam. This new version sells for $230, while the older 4GB model drops to $200—and we’d say the improvements are worth the extra $30 if you’re torn between the two. The Flip Mino HD is available now.

Combatting ATM Fraud Through Mobiles

ATM fraud is a big topic in Japan, with police in many areas launching big publicity campaigns. Amongst the main targets are the elderly, often telephoned by perpetrators claiming to be relatives and in need of some emergency funds.

ATMs in Japan are very convenient, allowing ordinary consumers to perform transfers and many other functions. Unfortunately, this convenience comes with a side-effect: people can be tricked into sending their funds to the wrong account by pressing a few buttons. It is estimated that in the first three months of 2008 alone there were 5,618 incidents resulting in a loss of 78 billion yen.

Now police and banks in Aichi have come up with an innovation to combat these problem. Since many victims are told instructions and the account details directly over the phone as they put them into the machine, ATMs will now no longer allow consumers to complete the transaction until they hang up. A metallic film around the ATM will block access if it detects mobile phone waves. Essentially ATMs will become out of range for mobiles. Not only might this prevent the criminals from relating their information, it also introduces a break for the consumer to think carefully about the transaction they are about to make.

It is still just in a trial period but police hope to introduce the system nation-wide.

Apple to introduce host of new machines, new multitouch input devices tomorrow?

We’re not sure why John Gruber and Dan Lyons are having some sort of megalomaniacal Apple super-pundit standoff, but we’ll sit here and take the spoils: Gruber’s just one-upped Lyons’s earlier vague tease of new Apple gear tomorrow with a pretty specific list of things he’s apparently heard we’ll see, including new iMacs and plastic MacBooks, revved Mac Minis (including one that runs OS X Server), a new multitouch “Magic Mouse” (ha!) and some sort of multitouch desktop trackpad accessory. That pretty much covers every rumor and vague whisper we’ve heard over the past few months, so it’s actually a fairly conservative set of predictions, outside of that trackpad — which itself may or may not be related to this multitouch input device patent from a couple weeks ago. We’ll see what happens tomorrow morning — at this point we’re half expecting a tablet, a pony, and some sort of multitouch waffle maker as well.

T-Mobile Tap coming November 11, Samsung Behold II on November 18?

The CLIQ might be getting the lion’s share of the Android spotlight on T-Mobile at the moment, but it’s not the only Google-equipped gear in the carrier’s pipeline — the other big news there would be the Behold II from Samsung, a logical successor to the myTouch 3G with an AMOLED display and 5 megapixel cam. Seems like there’s a little bit of a wait left, because TmoNews has scored some launch documentation suggesting that they’re planning on a November 18 to get it pushed out to the public (and let’s be honest, we’d all rather have that positively sick nasty myTouch Fender Limited Edition anyhow). Moving our attention downmarket, there’s apparently a self-branded (read: a manufacturer you’ve never heard of) full touch device called the “Tap” that’ll be hitting on the 11th of next month, likely slotting in below the Highlight in the carrier’s range. No offense, there, Tap, but we’re going to have to take a Behold II over ya.
