Forget Elmo, Robotic Hamster Zhu Zhu Pets Top Toy Sales

zhu zhu pets.jpg

Who would have suspected that the hot toy of 2009 would be a robotic hamster?

If you’re not under 12, or a parent, the combination of cute, cuddly, and well, robotics might seem a bit alien. But kids have apparently been flocking to Zhu Zhu Pets (beware of the music!), a line of $10 robotic hamsters that roam through plastic tunnels, down slides and ramps, and power hamster balls.

Their appeal can apparently be summed up best by Cepia, the small American toy company that has imported them from China: “The best alternatives to real live hamsters, Zhu Zhu Pets hamsters don`t poop, die, or stink, but they are still a riot of motion and sound.”

While it’s unclear how many Zhu Zhu Pets have actually sold, the National Retail Federation highlighted the toys as one of the most popular sales items over the Thanksgiving holiday. Time to Play Magazine lists them as its top editor’s pick for girl’s toys.

So far, a quick scan of retailers’ Web sites seems to bear that out. Every item in the Zhu Zhu category is sold out on ToysRUs.com, while the “Squiggles” hamster – normally $9.99 on ToysRUs.com – is priced at a whopping $62.99 on Amazon.com, compliments of a partner, Begum.com. However, they’re also listed as “in stock”.

Zune HD getting magenta and purple flavors on December 1st

Not enough variety in your Zune HD color palette? How about a friendly dab of magenta and purple to mix up the proceedings? Microsoft’s Zune Store is now showing some grayed out selectors for purple and magenta color options for the player, which will apparently be available on December 1st — just in time for something or other. No word on whether these will be available for both 16GB and 32GB versions, but pink already representing on the 32 gigger, we’d really hope Microsoft would spread the love down to the cash strapped.

[Thanks, Jerel]

Nova DSLR concept reminds us that cameras need not be boring

Despite the distant memory that is film for most people, most DSLRs have plenty in common with their film-based ancestors, at least when it comes to form factor. Not this Nova DSLR concept. Conceived by Erin Fong, the idea is to allow for all sorts of hand holds thanks to the dual movable arms, and the controls at the fingertips seems surprisingly convenient. We’re sure there are all sorts of technical limitations holding something like this back, but after suffering severe kitted-out DSLR fatigue on multiple occasions, we could really get into something that makes a bit better use of how we regularly hold our non-imaging devices. Now if someone would just clean that lens already!

New Look for Google Notebook as it Leaves Beta, Goes Multi-lingual

This article was written on March 29, 2007 by CyberNet.

GooglenotebookAbout 1 year after Google Notebook went live, Google has taken it out of beta. And with that they’ve made some changes to the interface, and added several languages to it besides English.

While there weren’t too many changes to the interface, you’ll notice that it’s all polished up and looks cleaner. And because millions of people do not speak English, they added 17 other languages to choose from like German, Polish, Turkish, Chinese, etc.

The image below is a screenshot of what the new polished version looks like:

Googlenotebook2

This in comparison to the old version (image from ZDnet):

Googlenotebook3

A few things that might be nice to add in the future:

  • Offline syncing (seems to be the new convenient trend for online apps)
  • Tagging!

If they can take Google Notebook out of Beta, don’t you think it’s time they drop the Beta tag on Gmail? Sheesh!

Nokia shows off SNES on N900, quickly thinks better of it

A little bit of emulation is a basic rite of passage for a modern day device that allows open software development, and the N900 is no different. We first saw the device rocking some SNES way back in September, but apparently Nokia couldn’t pass up an opportunity to demonstrate the phone’s prowess and put up its own video of a few emulators in action. Unfortunately, while emulators are completely legal, the ROMs that run on them are rarely legit, and despite Nokia’s odd assertion in the video that “most publishers allow individual title usage provided that the user is in possession of the original title,” the phone giant has since pulled the video from the internets, and Nintendo is reportedly looking into the matter. Of course, N900 emulatin’ is still easy to come by from third parties — check one out after the break.

[Thanks, Nirvan]

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLIV: Zoho’s E72 is made in China, has Finland doing a double-take

Having trouble getting your hands on that Nokia E72? Perhaps you favor a handset with a TV tuner? Zoho’s KIRF E72 features the aforementioned tuner, dual sim, QWERTY keypad, WiFi, JAVA, FM tuner, and both rear and front-facing 1.3MP cameras. Rest assured, the UI looks nothing like what you’d get with from Finland. But did we mention that you could watch TV on the thing? Video after the break.

Archos releases developer edition firmware for Internet Tablets

According to a press release dated this morning, Archos is making proof-of-concept “developer edition” firmware available for its ARCHOS 5 and ARCHOS 7 Internet Media Tablets. Based on the Angstrom Linux distribution, this is by no means a commercial distro (no multimedia software) but since you’re taking it upon yourself to code the next great multimedia / social networking / productivity / time travel app anyways, you don’t really want to be bogged down by such pedestrian fare. According to the PR, the company “eagerly anticipates seeing its hardware platform used as a foundation for creating exciting new usage models and applications that the developer community brings.” And so do we! Read all about it after the break.
