Wii Xbox 360 to Make Shooters More Accessible to Non-Gamers

Like Wii Music before it, Nintendo’s upcoming Wii Xbox 360 takes something that once required skill to be good at and lowers the bar for entry. Finally, your mom can kick ass at Call of Duty!

Written by me, directed and edited by Craig Rowin, makeup by Annamarie Tendler, starring Noah Plener, John Ward, Matt Fisher and myself, voiceover by Sam Reich.

Lunar Lander Prize of $1 Million Still Up for Grabs

NASA_X_PRIZE_Lunar.jpg

The $1 million race to build a lunar lander is heating up, as–unexpectedly–Masten Space Systems’ Xoie rocket prototype has taken the lead. MSNBC reports that the Masten team’s remote-controlled rocket had a successful test flight, just one day after a damaging fire on the launch pad and two days after communications glitches derailed two earlier launch attempts.

Level 2 of the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge requires that a remote-controlled aircraft makes a complete round trip between one launch pad and a boulder-strewn pad about 164 feet away, according to the report. Each leg of the flight needs to last at least three minutes, and the rocket has to rise up 50 meters from the ground–all within a 135 minute time period.

Armadillo Aerospace–backed by id software’s John Carmack–first qualified to win last month. Since more than one team has now qualified for the prize, judges will decide who to award it to based on the accuracy of the flight. (Via Slashdot)

Japanese team takes top prize at World Solar Challenge

A Japanese team from Tokai University has taken the top spot at the World Solar Challenge, which was held at the end of last week in Australia. The team beat out the Delft University team which won four consecutive previous Challenges, and this year took second place, with the third seat going to the University of Michigan. The race course travels from southern to northern Australia over 3,000 km (about 1864 miles), and the winning team’s car, Tokai Challenger, completed the race in just under 30 hours, averaging 62 miles per hour. Other notable participants included the MIT-built Eleanor.

SpiderPro Camera Holster Is the Belt Peter Parker Would Use

The SpiderPro camera holster system we brought you last week has moved from teaser status into the world of real, ready to buy gadgets. For those who weren’t paying attention, the SpiderPro consists of a belt onto which you mount a clip with a lockable slot. The “SpiderPlate” then screws into the bottom of your camera and then into that are affixed one or two “Spider Pins”. And if you still haven’t worked out the reasoning behind the lame headline of this post, there is truly no hope for you.

The hip-mounting system comes in at $110 for the full one-camera kit, and all parts are available separately to let you customize the setup. We’re very interested to check this out, not least because the hip is one of the most comfortable place to hang heavy gear (sadly, it is also the most dorky).

And now the SpiderFolks have released their creature into the wild, they are already planning more accessories. All of them let you hook the holster up to a variety of other special belts, or just the belt you are wearing now. Our favorite is the rather inevitably-named SpiderWeb.

XBMC ARM port teased, will manage HD playback from pocket-sized Beagleboard (video)

XBMC ARM port teased, will manage HD playback from pocket-sized Beagleboard (video)

There was a time when the X in XBMC stood for Xbox, but now just look at it. The open source project is showing up on everything from MIDs to Apple TVs and soon will be in the wild running on ARM-powered devices, with the development team posting a teaser video of the software running quite well on a tiny 600MHz Beagleboard. It’s a fraction of the size of most HTPCs and, at $150, a fraction of their cost, too. Right now the software seems to be struggling a bit with what looks to be 480p wide content, but the devs promise proper HD playback in the full release — though they’re not saying when that full release will be.

Sprint lights up WiMAX in NC, Chicago and Dallas, launches subsidized Mini 10

Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together? Or better yet, when a leaked roadmap doesn’t get delayed in the slightest? After months upon months of waiting, broadband-lovin’ citizens in the North Carolina Triangle and Triad will be celebrating alongside DFW residents and Chicago natives as Sprint’s 4G WiMAX service rolls into town. As of right now (that’s today, junior), consumers in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point and Charlotte, NC; Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas and Chicago, Illinois can roll into a Sprint store and snag a U300 3G / 4G WWAN modem on a $69.99 monthly data plan. We’re told that San Antonio and Austin will get lit up later this month, while Honolulu and Maui, Hawaii; Salem, Oregon and Seattle, Washington will join the fray before 2010. Oh, and did we mention that Palm’s favorite carrier finally snagged itself a WWAN-equipped netbook? ‘Cause the Dell Mini 10 is available starting today for $199.99 at select Sprint stores in the metropolitan Baltimore area.

Update: Looks like Sprint changed “Baltimore” to “Bay Area.” Odd.

Apple Snow Leopard Update Kills Atom Processor Support

Bad news for those running Snow Leopard on their netbooks–Apple is pulling another Palm Pre, cutting off the operating system’s support for the Intel Atom processor.

OS X Daily has this to say about the 10.6.2 update,

StellaRolla recommends staying with 10.6.1 (or 10.5.8 if you’re running Leopard on your Hackintosh, sine 10.5.9 will likely have the same Atom problems) for the time being, otherwise you can try upgrading to 10.6.2 but run an older or modified kernel. I think I’ll just stick to 10.6.1 when the update rolls around, I have a lot of confidence in the Hackintosh community so I imagine there will be a workaround rather quickly.

So, why would Apple cut off support for a processor? Well, the company doesn’t currently manufacturer any systems that use the Intel Atom. Like the Palm Pre/iTunes syncing issue and the suits against Psystar, this just seem to another way of ensuring that the company’s software stays tied exclusively to its hardware.

Motorola Settles With Customers Over Wonky Charger Complaint

Have you picked up a Motorola phone in the past eight and half years? Generally unhappy with your handset’s charging capabilities? You may have a cash payment coming your way. A settlement was reached in a class action suit against the phone manufacturer, entitling the purchasers of a number of phones to secure a cash payment from the company.

The list of covered handsets is available here–and it’s a long one. According to the Motorola Claims Administrator site,

Under the Settlement, Settlement Class Members who file a timely, complete, and accurate Claim Form and Affirmation will receive relief that is comparable to the relief that they would likely receive if they were to successfully and individually litigate their claims without the inherent risks and costs of litigation.

The actual payment depends on a number of factors, including the length of time the phone was owned, and whether or not the owner reported the issue to Motorola. The claim filing deadline is March 11, 2010.
