Tengu Black ready to rock your world

Did you know that some pseudo-scientists pinpointed January 18 as this year’s most depressing day? As we gaze out from the Engadget mansions at the leafless trees and listless mood outside, we can’t help but agree that January’s a bit of a downer. So to pep yourself up geeky style, why not grab an all-new Tengu Black? It seems a faithful reproduction (i.e. identical but for the color) of the white Tengu, a USB plug-in device that listens to your music and tries to lip sync to it with its LED array contorting into “over 14 different facial expressions.” Let’s face it, with the Robot Apocalypse all but assured, we should be practicing our love of inanimate objects as much as possible. A video reminder of how the older Tengu does its thing awaits after the break.

Apple’s iPad to demand lion’s share of tablet PC market?

It’s pretty early in the game to call the iPad a winner (or loser) but that’s not going to stop analysts and industry execs from their god-given right to bluster. AppleInsider did a nice roundup of Wall Street types predicting year one sales to be anywhere from 1 million and 5 million units with potential to grow as Apple churns out future device iterations, more content and carrier agreements, and a broader global reach of its devices and services. Paul Peng, executive VP of AU Optronics’ global business unit, the company tasked with providing the iPad’s display apparently, sees Apple selling up to 10 million units annually. Then again, AUO’s going to hype this device with all it’s got in hopes of selling additional panels to more clients.

On the surface, these numbers are pretty optimistic when you consider that Apple sells about 13.5 million Macs per year (extrapolating 3.36 million sold last quarter). Even more so when you realize that only 3 million to 4 million tablet PCs are sold annually according to Peng and Endpoint Technologies’ analyst Roger Kay. Problem is, the iPad isn’t really a tablet PC is it? As Technologizer astutely points out, “the iPad isn’t a traditional PC — it’s more of an appliance. You don’t tinker with your television; you turn it on and consume services.” By that logic, it’s not a direct competitor to the netbook or e-reader either (though the markets definitely overlap). The only thing we can say with certainty is that it is divisive and that it has captivated the attention of the entire consumer electronics industry.

Teased Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera leaked?

One of the more exciting camera technologies to emerge in the last 18 months is undoubtedly the Olympus and Panasonic Micro Four Thirds format. Amazing little cameras that pack DSLR-quality sensors into relatively compact shooters by ditching the mirror box. So bear with us as we ogle the latest Olympus leak said to be that Micro Four Thirds shooter teased only last week. The image shows a 14-42mm lens with rumors saying it’ll be cheaper (hooray!) than the E-P1 in part due to a plastic body (eww).

HTC’s HD2 carrying a secret stash of hidden RAM

Will this phone ever stop surprising us? Rumblings that all HD2 devices have 576MB of RAM inside them started developing in China a little while before T-Mobile unveiled its upgraded US-bound handset with, funnily enough, the same amount of memory. Now, those trusty souls over at XDA-developers have concocted custom ROMs for everyone else to free up the extra 128MB of operational headroom, and user feedback appears to corroborate the theory. We can hardly begin to fathom the reasons for HTC disabling part of its available hardware, other than to guess that a WinMo 7 upgrade was in the company’s plans for this phone all along and it just wanted to keep its ability to handle the new OS under wraps. Video and pictorial evidence of cracking past the 448MB barrier after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

80-port USB hub makes you feel like a powerful soldier

You know that 49-port USB hub you picked up last year? Sissy. Thanko just introduced an 80-port USB hub to charge all of your gadgets from a single location. Fantasy or nightmare? Well, first you have to consider the price (¥14,800, about $165) and the cabling chaos this will bring. Then you must know that the hub seems to charge your devices only: no USB data. And are you really man enough to handle the repulsive stares that a device like this will surely invoke from your family and so-called friends? Who cares! When a gadget promises this:

“When viewed from the side of the port in line, you feel powerful and somewhat like a soldier in the army.”

You’d be crazy not to want it.

Zune software references rumored Project Pink devices, a video upload service?

We weren’t sure things could get any more interesting with Microsoft’s mobile rumor mill, but along comes Zune Boards with some tantalizing findings in the latest Zune software update. First up is the eEndpointFamily files, which lists all the compatible hardware — ZuneHD, for example. Also found, however, were entries for “PmxPure” and “PmxTurtle.” PMX, if you recall, seems to be a reference to Microsoft’s
Premium Mobile eXperiences group, the remnants of the Danger acquisition who have been whispered to be working on Project Pink. As for Pure and Turtle, let’s go back all the way to September 2009, when we first heard those names as the initial Pink duo — there were some supposed renders, too. If that’s not enough, two PMX table entries pointed to a snippet of text stating that “Studio members” can “View and manage pictures and videos taken with your phone at the Studio,” followed by a link that for now redirects to Zune.net. Could the mysterious Project Pink and the oft-rumored “Zune phone” be one in the same, with some “Studio” service for uploading media to the cloud? Is this all some red herring perpetuated by some amused Microsoft staffers? We don’t know, but it’s mean to tug at our heart strings like that, Microsoft, and worse that it makes Mobile World Congress even more painful to wait for. #tmdp

Ask Engadget: Best noise cancelling Bluetooth headset?

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Jonathon, who’s currently preparing for a summer of fun with top dropped. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“I’m looking for a Bluetooth headset with the best noise reduction. I’ve got a convertible and would like to be able to have a conversation with the top down (at least around town, highway would be fantastic but probably unrealistic). So, any thoughts and / or suggestions?”

BT headsets have come a long way since we first posted a similar question in 2005, so we suspect the answers here will be quite a bit different. Do you have a particular earpiece that you enjoy while cruising under the open skies? Don’t hold back on us, now.

Sungale adds a touch of sleek, a pinch of ugly to 4.3-inch Kula TV PMP

Approximately 7.234 Earthlings showed any semblance of caring about Sungale’s 4.3-inch Kula when we reported on it back in December, and that’s clearly due to the blatant omission of a huge, inappropriate antenna on the top. Inexplicably, the Kula TV — which is essentially the exactly same 4.3-inch PMP with 2GB of internal storage space — ships with a flip-up WiFi antenna that’s supposed to net you better signal than the month-old Kula. We can’t say we’re eager to ever find out if said claim is true or not, but you can be our guest this March when it ships for $199.99.
