OLED becomes art, your bank account becomes empty

We’re still on the cusp of an OLED revolution for home entertainment — or at least we’re still holding out hope that we are. We’d planned on having big-screen displays by now but we’re instead still dealing with tiny ones along with a never-ending series of concepts. This latest use, spotted at last week’s CES, adds a little artistic flair to the technology, staggering a series of displays and synchronizing the video across them to create some lovely results. We’re not really into the whole lacquered boat look, but the fan-like array of displays is quite interesting to say the least. As is the cost: upwards of $100,000. You could buy a lot of XEL-1 TVs for that money. Video after the break.

Orange Chief Confirms Apple Tablet With Built-In Webcam [Updated]

“Oui.” That’s what Stéphane Richard—Orange’s Chief Executive Officer Delegate—answered to French journalist Jean Pierre Elkabbach on radio Europe 1, when asked about the imminent launch of the Apple tablet. He also mentions the webcam we heard about.[Updated]

Jean Pierre Elkabbach: According to Le Point, your partner Apple will launch a Tablet…

Stéphane Richard: Yes.

Jean Pierre Elkabbach: …with a webcam…

Stéphane Richard: Yes.

Jean Pierre Elkabbach: …would Orange users benefit from this?

Stéphane Richard: Sure! They are going to benefit from the web cam, certainly we will be able to, in effect, transmit images in real time. We are going to modernize, in essence, the video phone that we knew a few years ago… the size of the resolution, and the quality of the resolution will be better, and it will be available to all in France.

Jump to 6:15 to listen to it (in French):

Update: In an official statement, Orange has said that Stephane Richard’s words were “taken out of context” and that he didn’t acknowledge the existence of the Apple tablet.

However, the translation above is exactly what he said, with all the context. There’s no other mention to the Apple tablet before or after the above. So no, his words weren’t taken out of context, and they are presented as is.

Back in 2007, Orange CEO Didier Lombard spilt the beans on their iPhone partnership with Apple ahead of the official announcement, prompting the rage of Steve Jobs and an “official” denial by the Orange PR machine.

Russia gets mocha-edition HTC Hero, plastic flavor coming soon

Russia gets mocha-edition HTC Hero, plastic flavor coming soon

Sure, you lament about this or that certain smartphone not coming to your wireless provider of choice, but imagine if that phone hadn’t even been released in your country. For those who are Russian and for whom That Certain Smartphone is the HTC Hero, your time is finally coming, and soon. HTC sent out devices to many members of the .RU press, but rather than providing functioning ones they received models made entirely of chocolate. Not entirely encouraging, but the company’s Cyrillic Twitter page (which has been responsible for creating a stir in the past) is saying the phone is coming soon, as in the next few weeks, and HTC also created a Facebook fan page for the phone over the weekend. So, buckle up Russian readers; looks like you’re getting your Hero soon.

CES Numbers Up From Last Year

Well, the initial CES attendance estimates are in from the Consumer Electronics Association–the organization behind CES–and it looks to be good news. Despite pre-show estimates suggesting that attendance would drop off from last year, it seems that the show has actually seen a bit of a bump.

The CEA had initially expected last years attendance of 113,085 people to drop to somewhere around 110,000. According to an e-mail sent by the CEA to attendees, At show close, preliminary registration figures indicate more than 120,000 industry professionals attended the 2010 International CES.

There were more than 2,500 companies present at the show, according to the numbers–a decline of 2,700 from the year before. That, certainly, shouldnt come as much of a surprise to those present–the show occupied noticeably less floor space than a year prior, with certainly companies conspicuously absent from the proceedings.

There was, however, a record 330 new exhibitors, according to the CEA. This likely had something to do with a number of newly introduced floor sections, including The iLounge Pavilion and Living in Digital Times.

Magnetic3D glasses-free 3D eyes-on

We didn’t get a chance to check out the whole line of Magnetic3D autostereoscopic displays, but a trip to the International Gateway got us a quick glance of this challenger to Alioscopy. It claims up to 9 viewing angles, an improvement over Alioscopy’s 8, plus support for compressed MPEG-4 video and a smaller video player, key for the digital signage market these displays compete in. We did detect a bit more “pop” from greater distances and angles than competing tech, but unfortunately what we didn’t see was any indication this technology is any closer to being ready for regular TV watching. The 3D film over the demo 1080p LCD still drops the resolution somewhat and makes 2D viewing a messy blur, so for the time being, these displays popping out ads from streetcorners or slot machines will have to do.

Apple Tablet Apparently Confirmed by France Telecom Exec

Did France Telecom/Orange executive Stephane Richard unflinchingly confirm the existence of that long awaited Apple tablet? The answer, it seems, is a resounding “oui.” Asked by French journalist, Jean-Pierre Elkabbach, whether such a device would be arriving “in a couple of days,” the executive answered in the affirmative.

Pressed a little more, Richard confirmed that it would both have a Webcam and that “Orange customers [are] going to be able to enjoy it.” So, will the device require a cell plan, ala the iPhone? Will it simply be made available for purchase through carriers? Pure speculation at this point, of course, but until Apple actually confirms such a thing, that’s all we’ve got.

Orange, the fifth largest carrier in the world, currently offers the iPhone in 28 countries and territories.

Orange exec confirms existence of Apple Tablet?

Yes, we hate to start off a fresh week with more talk of the Apple tablet, but this isn’t just another rumor. Stéphane Richard, second in command at Orange, was asked on a Europe 1 radio program about the Apple Tablet. When he was asked whether such a tablet will be announced before the end of the month, he responded “Yes,” and when asked whether Orange users would get it, he responded “Sure!” This is of course not a formal confirmation by any means, but he doesn’t sound like he’s talking in theoreticals, either. You can listen to it yourself at the read link below and let us know what you think below.

Update: We now have the video below courtesy of SlashGear, who aren’t quite so convinced that he’s referring to the tablet itself, possibly just confirming that others are reporting the tablet will be released next week. Any native speakers care to help us wade through the intricacies of this, the language of love?

Update 2: We’ve got a full translation after the break of the entire relevant bits, courtesy of bilingual reader Sean Mangar.

Update fin: Orange has issued a statement predictably saying these comments are being taken out of context, that Richard was “merely confirming that he is aware of the speculation surrounding a launch.” So, the fun is over folks — or is it?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

LG Magic Motion gesture control HDTV remote hands-on

Packed in with LG’s new top of the line LCD, the 3D capable, LED backlit LE9500 is a new RF remote that users wave, Wii-style, to operate the onscreen menus. There’s also a standard IR remote for universal remote compatibility and the very necessary lazy bastards who don’t want to lift their arms to change the channel compatibility. Check out a quick demo from the CES show floor after the break.

AirStash wireless SD card reader hands-on

Just as CES is wrapping up, we managed to get some hands-on time with the AirStash wireless SD card reader, which is targeted at iPhone OS devices (but does work with other WiFi-enabled devices). Like many of the mysterious products from Vegas we have no price, release date or battery life, but what we do know now is that it’s indeed very light (1.5 ounces), fits nicely in our hands and supports up to 32GB SDHC cards. As for wireless connection the AirStash acts as a WiFi 802.11b/g access point — a cunning way to dodge the Apple dock connector license fees or the lack of Bluetooth profiles. Sadly, the prototype wasn’t working properly due to “some RF interference,” but as you can see above, the AirStash is accessed via a browser (UI design not final). Sure, this would mean you’d lose Internet connection via WiFi, but if the AirStash is cheap enough, then we’ll live with it. Let’s hope they hurry up with the release, though.
