Report: Microsoft Patents EMG Controller Technology

Tired of using your hands? Microsoft has reportedly applied for a patent that would allow you to operate devices hands-free, by flexing muscles in other parts of your body.

The technology is known as Electromyography (EMG), which translates electrical impulses from muscles to a computer, according to TechFlash. A Microsoft research video (above) shows a using strapping some sensors to their arm and then playing Guitar Hero via air guitar, or without an actual guitar hooked up to the console.

The technology could come as wearable gear for the arms, head, chest, or legs, TechFlash reports. Don’t add it to your wishlist just yet, though. Microsoft does not expect this to be on store shelves anytime soon.

Popbox v1.0 hardware specs and content partners revealed

We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to get our hands on the Popbox, son of Popcorn Hour C-200, but in the meantime we’ll chew on this healthy list of specs and content providers to imagine what the future of media streamers has to offer. Netflix and 1080p have already been mentioned, but the lists reveal that even as a slimmed down and more affordable option than the box it replaces, it still has the file and codec compatibility fans have come to expect. We’ll soon see if this combo of wide appeal online services like Twitter and MLB.tv, existing media streamer framework, a greatly improved UI (able to pull down IMDB info for appropriately tagged content) and Popapp Center — openly courting developers to take advantage of the SDK since this box was codenamed DAVID — is a winner.

However, unlike the previous offering, this time the app in question is actually sort of useful. pOriginally posted at a href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-10424432-48.html” class=”origPostedBlog”The Car Tech blog/a/p

Technocel T360 is one basic headset

The Technocel T360 won’t win any awards for this entry-level Bluetooth headset. It looks boring and has ho-hum features, but it is affordable at $39.99 retail. pOriginally posted at a href=”http://ces.cnet.com/8301-31045_1-10424385-269.html” class=”origPostedBlog”2010 CES/a/p

L5 Remote turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a universal remote

Sure, you can use Apple’s own Remote application to use your iPhone or iPod touch as a remote for your Mac, but that likely isn’t going help most folks’ with their home theaters. This new L5 Remote might be just what you’re looking for, however, and it doesn’t require a pricey dock like some other similar options. Making its official debut at CES, the L5 is a $50 IR dongle / app bundle that promises to do more or less everything that a dedicated universal remote does, and plenty of things that many of those don’t — like let you create your own customized interface. Of course, that all hinges on the thing actually working as well as a dedicated device, and we should no doubt hear more about that in the lead-up to its rollout next month.

Dell and Microsoft Join in on (PRODUCT)RED

Microsoft and Dell have just announced that they are teaming up to join in on (PRODUCT)RED.  As many of you probably already know, it is an initiative started by U2’s Bono and another man, Bobby Shriver, and the purpose is to raise money for the global fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.   Several other companies like Apple, Gap, and American Express have already been participating for quite some time since the project launched two years ago. Dell has three different editions of their XPS line that are part of  the project, and each come with a special version of Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT)RED. Depending on the computer you purchase, Microsoft and Dell will contribute a total $50-$80, enough to purchase a 4-6 month treatment for one person living with AIDS in Africa.

The three computers that you can choose from include:

  • Dell XPS M1330 (PRODUCT)RED (13.3″ HD Widescreen laptop) – Starting Price is $1,149
  • Dell XPS M1530 (PRODUCT)RED (15.4″ HD Widescreen laptop) – Starting Price is $1,149
  • Dell XPS One (PRODUCT)RED (All-in-one desktop) – Starting Price $1,599

There’s also a Dell 948 All-in-one (PRODUCT)RED Printer which they’re selling for $99.

This new version of Windows Vista Ultimate does include a few things you won’t find with any other version of Windows that set it apart, and thankfully, it won’t cost you any extra:

  • 6 Wallpapers
  • 2 Sidebar Gadgets
  • 1 Screensaver
  • 1 DreamScene movie

And of course all of the included “extras” are focused around red.  The screenshot below shows you what the desktop will look like, and I must say, it does look pretty cool.

As the Microsoft site says, “You get what you want. People get what they need.”
