Pioneer Puts a Home Theater System in your Dash

Just because you’re driving the highways of this land doesn’t mean you have to miss out on being entertained. What else to think about the just-released Pioneer AVH-P3200BT and AVH-P3200DVD, which offer audio and video capabilities that used to be reserved for the living room? Both let you listen to your iPod’s songs, watch DVD videos, view digital photos, and add GPS navigation. The idea, says Pioneer, is to turn the car into a hub for entertainment, convenience, and communication. And you thought it was just for driving.

Both models also offer a 5.8-inch touch interface, an SD card slot, iTunes tagging via RDS, album art, and passenger control. The AVH-P3200BT throws in Bluetooth connectivity so that you don’t have to remove your eyes from the road while driving, and lists for $499. The Bluetooth-free AVH-P3200DVD lists for $449.

I like the notice on the Pioneer page that says “Do not use your Pioneer system if doing so will divert your attention in any way from the safe operation of your vehicle.” So apparently the driver shouldn’t look at the DVD playing on the dashboard.

Firmware corruption probe implicates at least one RealSSD C300

We don’t know too many folks who shelled out the dosh for Crucial’s RealSSD C300, so perhaps it’s no surprise that we haven’t heard too many complaints about the thing. We do know at least one high roller who got his hands on one, however, and for him things are definitely not going so swimmingly. In fact, our friend Anand is apparently the proud owner of one such device that just “decided to up and stop working one day.” That’s not good! While the cause has yet to be determined, Crucial has been in contact and seems to think that errors in the firmware tables have resulted in a drive that is now very, very slow at powering up. It’s not clear whether or not this is going to be a common problem, but if the same thing happens to you perhaps you can sleep easily that at least there’s the possibility of saving your data. Or maybe you’re just kicking yourself for spending $800 on an SSD. Either way, Mr. AnandTech shares insight into this — and more, including poor performance after TRIMing the LBAs on his replacement SSD and more. Exciting, huh? Hit the source link to see for yourself.

[Thanks, Aristo]

This Season’s Must-Buy LEGO Sets [Lego]

LEGO has been on top of licensing its brand into videogames, something that could have ended in disastrous shovelware but instead has led to some pretty great titles. (And fingers remain crossed for LEGO Universe, the upcoming MMO.) More »

iPhone Hacker Thinks He’s Cracked the iPad, Too

George Hotz, famously known as the first hacker to unlock the iPhone, says he’s done it again. The whiz kid on Thursday evening said he had cooked up a new hack for all iPhone OS devices, and he’s betting it will work on the iPad, too.

When the hack is released (Hotz won’t disclose a release date), it should be as simple to use as Blackra1n, Hotz’s one-click solution to jailbreak current iPhones, he said.

“It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models (ipt2, 3gs, ipt3), and will probably work on iPad too,” Hotz said in his blog post.

It’s plausible to believe that an iPhone OS jailbreak will also work for the iPad. While the iPad will support apps that are exclusive to the device, its OS shares the same DNA as the iPhone’s.

Hackers use the term “jailbreaking” to describe the act of overriding the iPhone’s restrictions to install unauthorized software on the device. Jailbreaking is the first step an iPhone owner must take in order to later unlock the handset, enabling it to work with a SIM card from any carrier.

Wired.com in November 2009 profiled Hotz, along with the community of hackers persistently issuing jailbreaks and mods to fight against Apple’s tight control of its iPhone. The community also distributes unauthorized iPhone apps in a few underground app stores, the most popular of which is Cydia.

Hotz told Wired.com in a phone interview that he might release the hack when the iPad launches next week. But he said he would wait to see what the rest of the hacking community does first. He said he expects the Dev-Team, another group of iPhone hackers (that Hotz was formerly part of), to have figured out the same exploit.

“We’ll see what the rest of the scene does,” Hotz said. “Maybe I’ll release it [during the iPad launch].”

A video of the new iPhone jailbreak in action is below the jump.

Updated noon PT with a statement from Hotz.

USB mass storage support coming to Xbox 360 on April 6th

We had a pretty firm idea that this was happening, but now Major Nelson has gone and made it official: mass storage is coming the Xbox 360 at long last. There will be a system update on April 6th, which will allow up to two simultaneous USB flash drives plugged into the system, which will be capable of storing profiles, game saves, demos, “and more.” The maximum size supported is 16GB, and even though regular USB hard drives will be supported, they’ll be up against the same size cap, and performance will suffer as well. You’ll have to manually format a USB device for use in this way when plugging it into the 360, but Microsoft will be partnering with SanDisk for a branded drive in May that will come preconfigured. Also tweaked is the new memory management screen (what convenient timing!) which should make shuffling around these files less of a chore. Check out some screenshots below.

[Thanks, Jeff]

Pioneer’s new CD deck and mixer feature MIDI integration, USB for external storage

If you’re looking for a product designed to “transform novices” (that is, you) into “the next generation DJ” (that is, Sven Vath) you’re in luck: Pioneer has just announced a CD deck / mixer combo that includes the usual compliment of features (looping capabilities, a visual beat display, BPM lock, so on, and so forth) as well as some computer-friendly touches, including MIDI integration — allowing you to use either as a control surface for your fave DJ software. The CDJ will also play music off your thumb drive, and the mixer itself accepts external USB storage device for saving your mixes as WAV files. Sure, in our day all one needed were two turntables and a crossfader to rock the party — but that was a long time ago, kids. The CDJ-350 and DJM-350 will be available in June 2010 for $850 and $750, respectively. We’ve only scratched the surface here, however — peep the PR below for all the vital details.

Miyamoto says that Wii is ‘honored’ to be in such great company as Move and Natal

While Sony might be doing its best to heat things up with its Wii-baiting “realistic movements” ad campaign, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto is taking the high road. Elaborating on recent comments that he made about the threat posed by rival motion controllers (or lack thereof), the elder statesman, whose career stretches back to the beginnings of the video game industry and includes everything from Donkey Kong to The Legend of Zelda and beyond (don’t forget Nintendogs), said that “[c]ompeting with other companies” in a specific product category was “never our top priority.” Rather, the company will continue to do what it does best: creating “unique and unprecedented entertainment.” So how does he feel about PS Move, then? “The user experience we have created is going to be intensified by the advent of new machines from other companies. It’s a new experience that we originated. So we really see it as a great honor.” Class act, that guy. We’ll see how he feels when we beat him to market with our Engadget Vitality Sensor.
