Sprint rolls out new 30 day ‘money back guarantee’ trial, claims it’s not a promo

Every so often, an American wireless carrier will toss out a no-holds-barred 15 or 30-day money back guarantee, likely initiated to spur customer walk-ins, and in turn, boost the adoption rate. Sprint, however, is sick and tired (but mostly tired) of playing such games, and it has today announced a new “Satisfaction Guaranteed or Money-Back” program that it has no current intentions of ever nixing. We spoke to Sprint this morning regarding the news, and a spokesperson affirmed that it will be in place for the foreseeable future, with no expiration date already dialed up in the background. The new deal (which starts tomorrow, all kidding aside) enables any customer to open up a new line of Sprint service for 30 days; if they aren’t feeling it, they’ll get “reimbursed for the device purchase and activation fee, get the early termination fee waived, get a full refund for service plan monthly recurring charges incurred and get all associated taxes and Sprint surcharges associated with these charges waived.” We’ll confess — that’s pretty darn thorough, but do you seriously expect to return that EVO 4G? No, no you don’t.

Backup Music from iPhone or iPod

I’ve been asked several times how you can get music off of your iPhone or iPod. More often than not it’s because something happened to the user’s music library on their computer, and they are looking for a way to snag all of their precious music from their iPod before it’s completely gone.

A simple and free app called SharePod is capable of doing just that. You can copy songs to your computer, upload them to your iPod, and even backup an iPod. If you’re dealing with an iPhone or iPod Touch you’ll need to have iTunes installed in order for most of the operations to work, but once you pass that hurdle you should be good to go.

Here are some of the features you have to look forward to by using SharePod:

  • Add & remove music and videos from your iPod
  • Add, remove and edit playlists
  • Add & remove album art
  • Copy music, videos and playlists from your iPod to PC
  • Import music/videos into your iTunes library, including playlists and ratings
  • Tag editing
  • Drag n’ drop to and from Explorer
  • Simple, clean interface
  • Quick to load and use with no unnessary complicated features

Now if only Apple offered better two-way syncing with iPods then apps like this wouldn’t be necessary.

Wilson is out today. He’s supposedly covering the New York auto show for CNET TV, but we suspect that he’s at home still trying to get the Cheeseburger Doritos flavor off his tongue from yesterday’s episode. We aren’t mad at him either, because Natali Del Conte steps into his shoes to sort out a few stories on today’s episode, starting with a short explanation behind that “PC Load Letter” message you’ve probably seen on your office printer.

Immortalized in the classic scene from Office Space, Michael Bolton probably wouldn’t have been so pissed if CNET’s prestigious printer Editor Justin Yu was around to show him that “PC Load Letter” means you have to load letter-size paper into the Paper Cassette. It’s that simple, now put the bat down.

The next story might not be so easy to explain. “Security experts” suspect that terrorists have plans to smuggle explosives onto planes using bombs in fake breast implants. Since you can apparently hide up to five ounces of pentaerythritol tetrabitrate (yes, from “Die Hard 3”), airline officials will likely start more
“in-depth” examinations of women that have undergone breast augmentation surgery. No, this is not a ploy by Wilson G. Tang to make some money on the side, but we’re still wondering if it’s possible to feel the difference between silicone and pentaerythritol tetrabitrate…”Oh my!”

Some people just can’t have a conversation online without punctuating their thoughts with a silly emoticon. In fact, as Natali tells us, there’s even a new emoticon out now that conveys sarcasm! Theo Watson adds his own twist on the funny faces with a new Auto Smiley program that uses a Web cam to automatically insert a smileycon into whatever program you’re using. You can download the app and source code here and enjoy your hands-free smiling!

Keep the e-mails and voice mails coming everyone! Call us up at 1-866-404-CNET or send a message to the404(at)cnetcom and let us know what’s on your mind. We’re starting to read listener e-mails on the air now, so make them good! As always, sticker pictures are appreciated as well, and don’t forget about Steve Guttenberg’s ongoing “Audiophillie” awards–we’ve already received submissions but you still have plenty of time to send yours in before the April 12 deadline, so get to work!

Samsung Galaxy S Pro to come with a QWERTY keyboard in June, says Eldar Murtazin

Those whispers you might have heard of a Pro version of Samsung’s delectable Galaxy S have just turned into a booming roar, thanks to Eldar Murtazin apparently confirming the existence and prospective arrival of the rumored handset. According to the legendarily loquacious mobile reviewer, Samsung will be strapping a QWERTY keyboard onto the already potent Galaxy S hardware and upping the pricing ante with an extra €50 (about $67) charge. He also manages to give us a June launch date, but pictures of this device are predictably not yet available. We’ll just have to let our imagination do the work until Mr. Blurrycam gets on the case. Screenshot of the relevant tweet after the break.

Update: HDblog.it has thrown up a pretty realistic (though fake) render of the rumored model, and if the real thing is anything like this, Sammy might have a contender on its hands. Now we sit and wait for June, eh?

HP Sneaks Two Desktop Laser Printers Onto Its Site

HP Laserjet Pro p1102w.jpg

They aren’t officially announced yet, but HP sneaked two printers onto its Web site today–the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w and HP LaserJet Pro P1606dn–in a stealth introduction. Both fall into the only monochrome laser printer category that (to me at least) is still intrinsically interesting: personal monochrome laser printers, AKA the sort of beasties you can find room for on your desk without too much trouble.

I’ve already had both printers in hand for a couple of weeks, run them through their paces, and written the reviews. We’re in the final throes of getting them ready to post. In the meantime, just to whet your appetite, I’ll mention that if you’re at all interested in getting a personal mono laser, these are very much worth taking a look at. If you remember when a personal mono laser printer meant a 4ppm speed…well, that was a long time ago. The category keeps getting faster and better, and these are a case (or would that be cases) in point.

Canon Unveils Six LCD Projectors

CanonLV8310.jpg

Hey, take it easy there, Canon. What’s the rush? The company has just released six reasonably-priced LCD projectors, so good luck making up your mind. Here’s the run-down.

The LV-8310 ($1,199, above) and the LV-8215 ($1,099) offer 1,280-by-800 widescreen WXGA resolution with a 16:10 aspect ratio. The first offers 3,000 lumens, and the second, 2,600 lumens.

The remaining four all offer XGA (1,024 by 768 ) resolution. The LV-7385 ($1,699) is the brightest at 3500 lumens. The LV-7380 ($999) offers 3,000 lumens, the LV-7285 ($899) has 2,600 lumens, and the LV-7280 ($799) has 2,200 lumens.

All six models include reduced power consumption and lower CO2 emissions due to a lower wattage light, and extend lamp life to 4,000 hours in Normal Mode and 5,000 hours in Quiet Mode. For more info, check out Canon’s projector page.

64GB Zune HD launching April 12th for $350, current models reduced $20

Let’s just be nice and feign surprise, okay? Good. With that out of the way, Microsoft has announced a 64GB version of Zune HD, due out April 12th via the Zune online store (and later via other retailers) with a handful of color options and a strapping $349.99 price tag. Not to be outdone, the 16GB and 32GB will each receive a $20 cut on the MSRP, to $200 and $270, respectively — whatever Amazon and Newegg slash beyond that is up to them. It seems “as soon as possible” is the motto for when the price drop is taking place, so if your favorite online / brick-and-mortar retailer isn’t yet honoring the extra Andrew Jackson in your pocket, have patience. So now we’re left with a v4.5 firmware release date as the remaining piece in this puzzle, but Microsoft promises to solve that riddle wrapped in an enigma “in the coming days.” Right. Press release after the break.

HP Envy 15 shipping for $950 after rebate

We know that you really had your heart set on that 14-inch Envy, but until they finally arrive from Shangri-La, the “mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains” (the same place whose Apple Stores stock the iPhone nano, incidentally) might we offer you a cut-rate 15-inch model as a consolation prize? As brought to our attention by the savvy shoppers at I4U News, the company is currently offering a $450 rebate on your next HP Envy 15 Core i5 (2.26GHz) lappy. And what’s more, your $950 sale price includes shipping — and not on the back of a unicorn, either. Just head on over to the HP store (hit the coverage link), throw in a 640GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive (you have to do this part — it’ll bring your total up to $1,399 and make you eligible for the free shipping) and apply coupon code NBMY33241 at checkout.
