Microsoft Plus! for Vista … Where’s the Ultimate Extras?

This article was written on January 16, 2008 by CyberNet.

Microsoft Plus Ultimate Extras

A forum member over at WinBeta snatched up what appears the box art for a Microsoft Plus! Pack designed for Vista. It was taken from an online Canadian store, called Future Shop, who has since removed the listing from their site. It was priced at $39.99 Canadian dollars, and the release date posted was February 15, 2008. The box says that it includes “four casual games enhanced for Windows Vista” developed by Mumbo Jumbo.

The Microsoft Plus! packs have been released for almost every consumer version of Windows since Windows 95. Often times they include things like games, themes, screensavers, and some small applications. I think that everyone expected Microsoft to retire the Plus! packs with the release of Vista Ultimate Extras, but I guess that’s not the case.

So maybe this is what the Ultimate Extras team has been up to instead of delivering those extra apps all of the Vista Ultimate users eagerly await? Maybe Microsoft will offer these for free to Vista Ultimate users? Who knows anymore.

New iPhone in June, claims SaskTel CEO (updated)

Saskatchewan-based SaskTel isn’t the biggest Canadian carrier out there — it’s very regional, along the lines of Cincinnati Bell for the US, in terms of subscribers — but it’s definitely a legit company, and its CEO Robert Watson has casually divulged some potentially major news to the Leader-Post. In a discussion on its 3G network set to launch July 1st, he had this to say: “The good news is that (Apple) is coming out with a new version of the iPhone in the June time-frame and they’re going to put us on that. So we’re quite excited about that.” A new version, you say? We wouldn’t be that surprised, frankly, since new iPhones have launched every summer for the past three years, but there’s still been nary a peep yet from the folks in Cupertino. Is Watson mistaken or speaking way out of turn? The man would be in a position to conceivably have the inside scoop. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Update: Just to be clear, while SaskTel is currently CDMA, the 3G network it’s rolling out is an iPhone-friendly HSPA.

Update 2: Seems SaskTel is now claiming that those comments were actually not confirmation of a forthcoming iPhone. See the full clarification after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Designer lantern sculptures shaped like faces

Mic Itaya’s exhibition “Chochin” (提灯, lantern) at Daikanyama’s Gallery Speak Now is displaying multiple new works by the designer. The extraordinary lanterns are available for purchase too, from just a few thousand yen up to fifty and sixty thousand ($550-600+).

Itaya has apparently blended contemporary sensibility with the desire to harness the “communication power” of traditional lantern shapes. He came up with slender human faces and curving tubes that are part sculpture, part lighting fixture. The exhibition runs until 28th April.

Ford Eco-Route plots most fuel efficient path, tells you how much longer it’ll take

Ford’s been slowly but surely tweaking its MyFord Touch interface for months now, and the latest stroke of genius to come across will surely light up the faces of treehuggers. In an effort to provide more routing options to drivers, the automaker is showcasing its new Eco-Route function in the 2011 Edge, which may or may not cause velitation with the good folks over at Garmin’s similarly titled ecoRoute project. At any rate, the new addition allows motorists to choose between the fastest route, shortest (distance) route or most fuel efficient route, and it places the estimated time of travel for each within eyesight. We’re guessing that most of you would simply select the method that requires the smallest investment of time, but those with nothing but may enjoy the new option. And somehow, somewhere, Mother Earth is blowing you a carbon-free kiss. Check out a brief demonstration video after the break.

Feel-goodroid: Nexus One is in the black, 60K Android devices activated per day

We’d heard a couple times that the Nexus One was selling at a mere trickle, but what we haven’t heard is whether the phones that have sold are enough to generate a profit for Google — and on its earnings call today, the company claimed for the first time that its superphone is indeed in the black. Speaking both of the Nexus One specifically and of the platform as a whole, the company said that “it is a profitable business for us… we are driving the business to be a profitable business,” some of the strongest language we’ve heard that Google intends to fully convert Android from a hobby into an integral part of its financials going forward. On a related note, the company also boasted on the call that it’s “seeing more than 60 thousand devices sold and activations daily,” which — by our rough math, anyhow — would work out to close to 22 million Android activations annually, and they’re now up to some 38,000 apps in the Market. Certainly seem like these guys have cemented their position as a mobile powerhouse, doesn’t it?

BodyTrace rolls out GSM-enabled eScale

Sure, a WiFi-equipped scale may be good enough for most people — since, you know, you’re likely to keep your scale in your house — but it looks like those not satisfied do now have another option in the form of BodyTrace’s new GSM-enabled eScale. Of course, the big advantage here is ease of setup rather than portability, since you’ll be able to automatically (and privately) upload your weight to the BodyTrace website without having to first mess with WiFi settings and whatnot. Somewhat surprisingly, the eScale is also actually cheaper than something like Withings’ WiFi scale, with it running just $59.99 including a year of service — or, alternatively, $9.99 a month with a $9.99 up-front setup fee (which also includes the scale).
