Samsung Galaxy S hits the FCC with AT&T bands onboard

It wasn’t even a week ago that we deduced the eventual launch of Samsung’s Galaxy S Android phone on AT&T, and now here we are looking at FCC documents confirming Ma Bell’s favorite frequencies. So much for intrigue and mystery. Of course, Samsung could have just filed the testing paperwork to cover devices headed to Canada and Mexico, so this doesn’t mean it’s a lock — especially since this phone is labeled as the i9000, not the SGH-i867 number we were sort of expecting. Either way, it looks like the rabid Samsung fanboys out there will be able to get their TouchWiz all up on Stateside 3G at some point — and isn’t that all you can expect from this world?

Dell Streak / Mini 5 makes a cameo appearance at MTV

It’s been a while since we’ve heard much about the Dell Streak / Mini 5, but it seems like the plus-size phone (or mini-size tablet, whichever you prefer) went on a bit of an undercover media promotion tour last week: Viacom MTV exec Greg Clayman tweeted that it’s “amazing,” while Rob Enderle brought one to the set of John C. Dvorak’s Cranky Geeks and said it would launch for around $300 on contract. What does it all mean? We’re assuming it’s being shown off in an effort to drum up some content partnerships: we’ve already heard about tie-ins with Amazon’s MP3, video, and Kindle stores, and we’d bet that Dell’s also going after newspapers, magazines, and video sites hard in an effort to push back at the iPad — especially since the company is planning to bring out an entire “family of tablets” in the future. Or… it’s nothing at all, and AT&T is going to completely wreck this thing before it launches, like it did with the Aero. Dreams or nightmares, the choice is yours.

Square Motorola Android slider leaks out, causes consternation

We swear we’ve seen a Motorola phone that looks like this odd square thing before, but it’s also possible we’re crazy. Either way, it looks like Moto’s working on a new Blur set running Android 2.1, and if you thought screen size and resolution issues differences were a big part of Android fragmentation before, well, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Oh, and as for the story that this pic came from a student who borrowed the phone from a friend whose dad works for Moto? We’d be more skeptical, except that’s exactly how we’ve gotten other dead-on Moto leaks. So… yeah. Anyway, a square Moto slider running Blur. Does that do anything for anyone? No? Okay.

Google Acquires Jotspot, Conde Nast Acquires Reddit

This article was written on October 31, 2006 by CyberNet.

Google Jotspot First I’ll start with Google’s acquisition of Jotspot. As if they didn’t get there hands on enough when they bought YouTube Google went and paid an unknown amount to buy the wiki company known as Jotspot. As Google Blogoscoped points out in the screenshots they took Jotspot already has the look and feel that Google services currently have. They are no longer letting people create accounts but one of the Jotspot developers was kind enough to provide a username and password in the Google Blogoscoped forums for users to play with it:

Site: http://sgd.jot.com/
Username: sam (at) davyson.com
Password: blogoscoped

I am very impressed at how easy the wiki is to use and edit new items. But get this…Jotspot already has their own calendar and spreadsheets available! From my recent trial there are a lot of features that Google definitely does better in their calendar and spreadsheets, but it is funny how there is a lot of overlap.

Reddit is also doing the acquisition dance because they were just acquired by Conde Nast, who is the owner of several magazines including Wired. Conde Nast doesn’t have plans to change Reddit which is important so that they don’t disrupt their current set of dedicated users. Now we all know that Digg will probably be very soon.

Numerous new iChat clues found iPhone OS 4

We don’t really know why Apple wouldn’t have mentioned iChat at its “tentpole”-filled keynote if it was all ready to go on it, but the eternal optimists within us would like to believe that the merest glimpse of the app would instantly reveal a front facing camera on whatever new iPhone hardware is in the works, therefore relegating the app to secrecy. Still, the evidence does indeed seem to be mounting for the software’s inclusion in the OS. Outside of the iChatAgent process that was spotted last week, 9 to 5 Mac has pulled the covers off references within the SDK to moderators, chat rooms, encrypted video conferences, and more. They even uncovered the same notification noises that the desktop iChat application uses. Sure, this could all be one big misunderstanding, but hopefully these breadcrumbs actually do point to a long-overdue, well-integrated IM experience on the device, video or no.

[Thanks, Maj0]

Kobo’s $149 eReader gets reviewed

So, how much e-book reader can $149 get you? Well, Kobo’s eReader might not be heavy on the feature set, but based on the general impressions from Electronista’s review, we’d say quite a bit. In exchange for dropping the 3G, WiFi, color screen and audio playback frills of the Kindle and Nook, Kobo’s barebones device puts a pretty and intuitive face on simple book reading for a pretty lovable price. The biggest complaint hinges around some slow performance when closing and opening books, but with 100 pre-loaded titles and a fairly budget friendly online library, it seems like the device has you covered when it comes to actually reading things. We also covered Kobo in our iPad book and comics roundup, if more hardware isn’t your thing.

Make XP Look Like Vista with WindowBlinds 6

This article was written on August 06, 2007 by CyberNet.

Stardock just released WindowBlinds 6 Beta, which is a huge milestone when it comes to skinning. This version adds a host of great new features for both Vista and XP users, with the most notable thing being the blur effect. Why is that so great? Well, it’s available for XP users as well as Vista users, so you don’t have to spend a fortune on a new operating system if you just want it to look good! Here is an example of the blur effect on Windows XP:

WindowBlinds 6

Aside from that there are also a host of options available in WindowBlinds 6 so that almost all aspects of your operating system look exactly the way you want it to. Here are a bunch of screenshots I took of the configuration screens (click on the thumbnails for a fullsize version):

WindowBlinds 6 Configuration WindowBlinds 6 Configuration WindowBlinds 6 Configuration WindowBlinds 6 Configuration WindowBlinds 6 Configuration WindowBlinds 6 Configuration WindowBlinds 6 Configuration

All of those screenshots were done while running WindowBlinds 6 Beta on a computer that is several years old and has an integrated graphics card. I don’t get all of the pretty effects that some of you can have (one example is that I only see an outline of a window when I move it around the screen), but as you can tell the blur effect still works. And as far as performance goes…I noticed no difference running WindowBlinds when compared to not running it. I really don’t know how Stardock does it.

Here’s a list of features currently available in WindowBlinds 6 Beta:

  • Animation overlays
  • Blur glass effects on both Windows Vista and Windows XP
  • User created sub-styles
  • Full font control
  • Explorer backgrounds
  • Complete Windows Vista skinning (including a sidebar skinner)
  • New Leo skin (that’s what I was using for all of the screenshots)
  • Faster performance
  • And much more!

When the final version of WindowBlinds 6 makes it out the door there will be 6 brand-new skins created by the Stardock Design team. There will also be a SkinStudio 6 Beta released soon so that skin developers can start taking advantage of the new features.

If you want to try out WindowBlinds 6 Beta you’ll need to have an ObjectDesktop subscription. Any users that purchased the standalone version of WindowBlinds 5 after February 1, 2007 will get a free upgrade to version 6 when it is released, so you can buy that now and rest easy knowing you’ll get the next major upgrade when it is available.

I have a strong feeling that we are going to see some great skins being developed for WindowBlinds 6, and this application will take XP’s skinning abilities to a whole new level with the added effects. Now I can’t wait to give this a shot on Vista to see how well it purs! :)

Flip Slide HD caught outside the box, still looks weird

Maybe it’s just the odd angle of this newly submitted out-of-box photograph, or maybe we just aren’t smart enough for Cisco, but we still we can’t quite figure out what exactly is going on here. We suppose the flip-up screen performs as a sort of poor man’s photo frame? At risk of being rude, we’re pretty sure we’d just like a thinner video camera, but when it comes to selling millions dirt cheap, dirt simple video cameras to the masses, the makers of the seemingly imminent Flip Slide HD are of course the experts.

[Thanks, anonymous]

MacBook Pro updates almost upon us? Screenshot of new model numbers offers hope

It seems silly to give up all expectation for a MacBook Pro refresh. After all, isn’t a spec bump for Apple’s flagship laptops a total inevitability? Still, the arduous wait has begun shake our faith, and we’re happy to see even this sliver of evidence to snap us from our stupor. An internal Microcenter system is listing four new laptops with new part numbers, which, if legitimate, almost certainly harbor new Core i5 and Core i7 processors (maybe even those NVIDIA Optimus graphics if we’re lucky). According to the Microcenter employee who sent this out, a similar thing happened in November with a correct model number and price for the new MacBook. Mac Rumors claims to have been able to receive independent confirmation on the numbers, so we might really have something here. Now, as for a specific launch date, the best we have so far is that April 13th rumor, but with a tips box buzzing with rumors, we’re starting almost feel confident in seeing a new MacBook Pro this century.

[Thanks, Ross W.]
