Lines form for Apple iPad 3G, even at 5 p.m. on a Friday afternoon

Maybe it’s the unseasonably warm weather, or maybe it’s just the appeal of surfing the Web from your iPad anywhere at anytime–but there are people lined up outside of Apple retail outlets waiting to but the new iPad 3G.

Motorola RAZR3 comes back from the dead for a very special hands-on video

While you’re still trying to decide whether or not we’ve entered the post-Moto era (maybe recent sales numbers were but a mere hiccup) might we interest you in a hands-on of Motorola’s doomed RAZR3 (aka Ruby)? Featuring an improved interface, GPS, FM radio, and a touchscreen, this would have been the phone to beat — in 2006. For a closer look at the dumphone that almost was, check out the video after the break.

iPad 3G Test Notes [Ipad]

The iPad 3G is the iPad I’ve been waiting for. It’s got two things the regular iPad doesn’t: 3G internet from AT&T and assisted GPS. The results we got from testing might surprise you, I think. Updated. More »

ASUS CEO: netbooks will outsell tablets, Eee Pad to run ‘Microsoft software’

ASUS CEO Jerry Shen sure is making the rounds this week talking up the company’s upcoming entry into the tablet arena, but before giving up some more Eee Pad details he clarified that he doesn’t anticipate tablet sales surpassing that of netbooks. The latter category is for personal computing while tablets are based on consuming content and Cloud computing. Shen said something similar when we spoke with him at CeBIT, but this time he also added that without Apple the tablet category would have been slower to ramp up. We’d say he’s on the money with that one, but still he plans to launch an Eee tablet in early June at Computex. And though he mentioned there being a few versions, he revealed the “first phase will use Microsoft software.” We don’t know if that means the tablet will be Intel powered and run Windows 7, or pack a Tegra 2 processor and boot some version of Windows CE like we saw at CES. Regardless of what happens, we’d say Microsoft’s happy to hear this all after this week’s news.

I Got Shaved by Carmen Electra (and the Norelco Bodygroom)

smaller.jpg

Yes, you read that headline correctly. And yes, today was a great day to be me (I’m the guy with the huge smile, third from the left and right next to Carmen in the photo).

To celebrate National Arbor Day, Philips Norelco announced it will donate a dollar to the Arbor Day Foundation for every Philips Norelco Bodygroom product sold. One dollar translates to one tree being planted, and the company has committed to planting up to 75,000 trees.
To help get the word out, the company launched a new campaign called Deforest Yourself, Reforest the World. And it recruited Camera Electra to “deforest” a few lucky guys on stage at Madison Square Park. Norelco was kind enough to treat me to a shave with Carmen.
My favorite part of the experience? Telling Carmen, “Today is a bigger day for me than my Bar Mitzvah.” Or maybe it was when she asked to shave my arm, and I got to flash my guns for her.

I also got a chance to talk tech with Carmen. She said she’s a Mac
user and owns a BlackBerry, but that rarely uses it, because she still uses and loves her Motorola RAZR

PowerColor HD5970 Eyefinity 12 makes six screens yesterday’s news

Alright, so your six-screen Eyefinity rig may not be obsolete just yet, but it’s definitely just been knocked down a few notches on the jaw drop-o-meter. What you’re looking at above is a prototype of PowerColor’s HD5970 Eyefinity 12, which — you guessed it — packs twelve Mini DisplayPorts, along with a full 4GB of DDR5 memory. Unfortunately, there’s no images or video of an actual twelve-screen rig in action just yet — PowerColor is saving that for Computex in June — but you can check out a few more shots of the card itself after the break.

The 404 571: Where the winner of the Audiophillie is… (podcast)

(Credit:
Steve Guttenberg/CNET)

Steve Guttenberg joins the show today to unveil the winners of the Audiophilliac awards, popularly known as the “Audiophillie Music Awards for Excellence in Recorded Sound”–started right here on The 404. The premise of the contest? Not the quality of the songs, but the quality of the song recordings. There’s a reason Guttenberg’s ears are insured for a million dollars.

The six winners of the Audiophillies receive Monster Turbine Pro Gold and Copper headphones. The strange thing about these headphones is that the Copper model are superior to the Gold, but both are supremely superior to the stock earbuds that come with most music players. Be sure to check out the winners–we’ve included links to the songs, and the winning submissions are not only musically impressive, but also sound great from a recording engineer’s perspective. Congrats to all the winners, and thanks to everyone who took the time to make a recording!

“Move On” by Magnet South

“Georgia” by Alan Carter

“Gimmie Mine” by Anthony Ceravolo

“Robin Hall” by Robin Hall

“Car Commercial” by Jeff Montville

“Blood Sweat and Funk” by David Adkins

Also on today’s show, Steve reveals that he may actually be the long lost half-brother to Steve Guttenberg, the actor of “Police Academy” fame. He also gives us a family history of his father’s salesman days travelling around with transistor radios!
