Eken’s Android-powered MID looks mighty nice for $100

Eken's Android-powered MID looks mighty nice for $100

Okay, so the last time we told you about an inexpensive Android tablet/MID things didn’t turn out so well. So, this time we bring you one to appreciate from afar — no credit card needed nor, as you’ll see, wanted. It’s seven-inch, 800 x 480 device from Eken that is selling for $680 RMB in China. That translates to $99.53 currently that, at first glimpse, looks to be quite a bargain. Sure, it has only 2GB of storage, but you can expand that to 32GB with SD. The VIA 8505 processor certainly won’t be confused for a Snapdragon but despite that the device pledges only two hours of battery life on a charge. To top it off it’s stuck with good ‘ol Android 1.5 installed, leaving us to conclude that this is hardly a bargain after all. Shucks.

Jetyo’s HDV-T900 solar-powered camcorder will capture only your brightest holiday memories

Jetyo's HDV-T900 solar-powered camcorder will capture only your brightest holiday memories (video)

This traditionally-shaped camcorder may not be ergonomically friendly, but it is environmentally friendly — ostensibly, anyway. It’s the HDV-T900 from Jetyo, a 720p30 model that records to SDHC memory cards through what appears to be a fixed zoom lens (its specs promise only an 8x digital zoom). The thing that makes this a conversation piece is the solar cell on the backside of the three-inch LCD display. It’s hardly encouraging that the company’s site doesn’t say anything about how quickly it recharges the 4 AA batteries used for power, or indeed how long those batteries can power the thing in the first place. But, the site does say the current from the solar cell is 120mA, so we can do the math. Assuming you’re using something like 2,500mAh AA rechargeable cells, you’re looking at about 25 hours of sunlight to recharge one battery and there are, of course, four used here. Hey, sounds like a good excuse to extend your vacation to us.

Freetalk Everyman HD webcam up for pre-order at Skype store

For all the talk of HD webcams, we’ve seen precious little at the Skype shop — until now. Freetalk’s Everyman HD (Talk-7140) features on-board H.264 hardware encoding for up to 720p video at 22fps, with minimum system requirements of WIndows XP, 1GB RAM and a dual core 2GHz CPU. Apparently, Mac users (OS X 10.4 or better) can expect VGA quality at 30fps (sorry, guys). Available soon, pre-order now for $50.

CyberNotes: How to Translate Feeds

This article was written on October 04, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Tutorial Thursday

I don’t know about you but there is a whole world of news out there that I don’t read, and it’s partly because of the language barrier. Services like Google Translate and BabelFish have tried to break down that barrier one step at a time, and while they do offer sitewide translations there is still no good alternative to translate RSS feeds.

I tried passing our site’s feed through Google Translate, but the page that was shot back to me was in the same language that I sent. So there wasn’t really anywhere else to turn but Yahoo! Pipes, which is exactly what I ended up doing. Using Yahoo! Pipes I was able to send an RSS feed through a BabelFish translator, and the result was our English feed being translated to French. I’ll discuss the drawbacks to using such a service, but lets first take a look at how you use Yahoo! Pipes to translate feeds:

  1. Add a feed item by dragging the Fetch Feed module over onto the grid, and then throw the site’s URL into the box.
    Translate an RSS Feed
  2. Now go to the Deprecated menu in the sidebar, and drag the BabelFish module over (there is a Translate module under the String menu, but that doesn’t work). Select the proper language conversion that you want to do, in this case we’re translating our English feed into French.
    Translate an RSS Feed Language
  3. Now you’ve got to connect the dots, litterally! Connect the Fetch Feed to BabelFish, and then connect BabelFish to the Pipe Output. When you hit the Refresh button at the bottom you should see the fruits of your labor:
    Translate an RSS Feed Final
  4. Go ahead and hit the Save button in the upper-right corner of the screen, and give your Pipe a name. Then click the Back to My Pipes link towards the top, and you should see your newly translated feed listed there. Click on it, and then subscribe to it with your feed reader!

There are a few downsides to pushing a feed through BabelFish, and the most obvious would be the poor translation. BabelFish is pretty notorious for turning a perfect sentence into gibber jabber by the time it is done doing its job, but at least you should be able to get some idea of what is being talked about in the article.

The other thing that bothers me a bit is that BabelFish can have a mind of its own sometimes when it comes to translating the data. It always seems to translate at least the titles of the articles, but sometimes the body of the article is left in its native language. Hey, this is free, so don’t be disappointed if you get poor results. :)

Kudos to Webware for coming up with this idea!

PS3 firmware 3.30 sneaks in remote play from PC, bitstream audio options

Additional trophy sorting and 3D gaming readiness should have been enough to satisfy and PS3 owner after the latest v3.30 system update (hey, at least it didn’t take anything away this time) but there’s a couple other surprises in store. If you’re the kind of person who loves (or hates) their beeps and bloops, there’s a toggle for Bitstream Direct (output audio with the original digital signal prioritized) or Mix (mixed with sound effects such as button sounds and then converted to bitstream format) on Blu-ray movies, while future VAIO PC owners can get a taste of remote play without any PSP intermediary. Other, unconfirmed, reports include updated Flash compatibility, enhanced region free Blu-ray movie playback, the usual complaints of bricked or otherwise busted consoles as well as erroneous claims of an updated EULA that maintains Sony can update your PS3 whenever it wants (newsflash – it’s always said that.) Sure, you can always wait for a custom build from Geohot instead, but we’ve got a Fat Princess to rescue.

Sony Dash spotted on shelf at Best Buy a few days early

Now, what do you know about that? Our very own Chris Ziegler stopped into Best Buy (undoubtedly right after leaving CB2) and spotted something we didn’t expect to see just yet… the Sony Dash. That’s right, the Dash – which is available for pre-order but wasn’t supposed to hit retail until April 29th — is already on the shelf. Now, there was only one unit available and it was just squeezed in between some other wares, so we’re not sure if it was put out by accident or what, but if you’re really dying to get your hands on one a few days early, hitting up your local BB might turn up something. Let us know in the comments if you nab one!

Update: Chris reported back to us to say that when he tried to purchase it, it came up with a price of $999 and a code of “DO NOT SELL.” He was also told to come back next Friday if he wanted to purchase it.

HP ships Swing motion controller hardware with Pavilion PCs in India

The vaguely kidney bean-shaped device above is actually, believe it or not, yet another motion controller. Details are scant, but apparently the HP Swing is being bundled with HP Pavilion desktop PCs in India (starting at 29,990 Rupees, or about $670). The thing will not be available separately, and as far as we know there are no plans to release it in the states. We’re not saying that it won’t be released in the US, but we are saying that we probably don’t care. Either way, we’ll let you know when we hear more.

Get A Free Google Orkut Invitation Here

Get A Free Google Orkut Invitation Here

Now, I know that many people already have Orkut, but there are also a lot of people that don’t. Just today I joined Orkut from an invitation that was sent to me and now I want to share the opportunity for everyone to join Orkut.

All I need you to do is leave a comment here with your name and email address that you want the invitation sent to. The email address does not have to be a GMail account. I will check frequently for new comments so it shouldn’t take long for your invitation to arrive! From what I can tell the invitations are UNLIMITED so don’t worry!

UPDATE: You do NOT need to put your email address in the posting, instead just put it in the email field when submitting a comment. This is easier for me and will be more secure for you because the spam crawlers will not see this address. I am the only one that has access to the email addresses when you place them in the email field, so this is probably the best solution for you and me!
