iPad Jailbreak Ready for Download

spirit_jailbreak

If you’re all into destabilizing your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch whilst simultaneously reducing its battery life, we have good news. The “Spirit” jailbreak is now available for all iPhone OS devices (including the just-released iPad 3G).

The jailbreak, from SpiritJB.com, is untethered. This means that once you have hacked your iDevice using the one-click software, you can restart it at will, just like you could with a clean, Apple-approved copy of the operating system. Some alternate methods require that you hook the iPhone OS device up to a computer to enable it to boot.

Jailbreaking involves hacking the OS to give you access to the file system and to allow running of third party software (as much of it as you like at the same time, hence the possible battery-life hit). With this release, the third-party application repository Cydia is reported to be buggy, so much so that it may crash your iPad or iPhone and require that you restore it from your official and proper Apple backup.

What this hack doesn’t do is unlock your iPhone from its carrier. If you’re feeling brave, go grab the download from the link below. Happy hacking.

Xperia X10 Mini coming to Vodafone soon?

Weight: 88 grams. Talk time: 4 hours. Pictures and video: right here. We told you everything there was to know about Sony Ericsson’s diminutive Xperia X10 mini during Mobile World Congress, but we didn’t know when and where it might arrive. According to the image at right, the answers are “soon” and “Vodafone,” respectively; Cool Smartphone tells us the pic was plucked from Vodafone’s May catalog. Assuming it’s the real deal, expect Robyn to land on European branches this summer for an undisclosed price, and appear in teenybopper music videos next fall.

RIM converts BMW’s iDrive into ‘a remote control for your BlackBerry’ (video)

If there’s one thing business types love more than their BlackBerry, it’s their BMW — or so we’re told. It makes all sorts of sense, therefore, that the two companies would partner up to help the things they sell communicate with each other more effortlessly. Using Bluetooth MAP (Message Access Profile), BlackBerry devices can now beam emails and contacts over to BMW’s iDrive dash system, where the driver can listen to his messages via a text-to-speech option or make calls using the car’s speakerphone. The first supported handset is the newly minted Pearl 3G, and we’re told this functionality will come as an integrated part of BlackBerry 6. To see how it works on a 335is, click past the break for the video.

[Thanks, Horatiu]

Aigo’s surprisingly sexy 7-inch N700 tablet packs Android 2.1 and Tegra 2

Go ‘head Aigo! Get down with your bad self. Quite frankly, we never anticipated Aigo / Patriot to come through with a me-too tablet that actually made us take a second glance, but darn if this one isn’t quite the looker. And that’s before you’ve even had a moment to digest the specifications sheet. According to new details surfacing in China, this 7-inch machine will hum along on a 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor and feature NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 graphics chipset. There’s also 512MB of DDR2 memory, an 800 x 480 pixel multitouch display, 4/16/32GB of inbuilt storage, a USB socket, microSD slot, HDMI output, inbuilt WiFi, optional 3G WWAN, audio in / out and a 3,120mAh battery. Android 2.1 will be the OS of choice, but crucial details surrounding price and availability are sorely missing. Call us crazy, but we’ll actually be keeping an eye out for specifics on both.

Update: Well, what do you know? Seems as if this here device may in fact be a Compal NAZ-10 in disguise, and if this YouTube video is to be believed, it’ll boast 16 hours of HD video playback on a single charge and a $300 price tag. Can you say “tempting?” Thanks, Alain!

Dell Inspiron 13R, 14R, 15R, 17R and M501R quietly surface

It’s hard to say at this point if this new spate of Inspiron machines are just region-specific lappies or totally new breeds of a tried-and-true original, but either way, they’re alive and well on Dell’s own website. So far as we can tell, the Dell Inspiron 13R, 14R, 15R, 17R and M501R are exactly like their non-R contemporaries save for a few choice options: the GPU assortment is far more robust on the new flavors, while there’s a larger quantity of choices in the operating system, RAM and wireless departments. There’s also word that a Dell Dock feature is built right into these, making it easier to access media for those who aren’t exactly technically inclined. To quote Walt Mayo, vice president Dell Consumer Asia: “This is a laptop that moms will love and youths will desire.” We can’t say we fit that demographic in any way, shape, or form, but we can appreciate the “smudge-resistant palm rests, full-size, ergonomically-designed keyboard and stiffer frame” when compared to the other Inspirons. These seem to be available now over in Australia and New Zealand, which means that order pages could go live at any moment for the rest of planet Earth.

[Thanks, Mitch]

NVIDIA VP says ‘Moore’s law is dead’

NVIDIA and Intel haven’t been shy about their differing respective visions of the future of computing in the past year or so, but it looks like Team GPU just upped the rhetoric a little — a Forbes column by NVIDIA VP Bill Dally argues that “Moore’s law is dead.” Given that Moore’s law is arguably the foundation of Intel’s entire business, such a statement is a huge shot across the bow; though other companies like AMD are guided by the doctrine, Intel’s relentless pursuit of Gordon Moore’s vision has become a focal point and rallying cry for the world’s largest chipmaker.

So what’s Dally’s solution to the death of Moore’s law? For everyone to buy into parallel computing, where — surprise, surprise — NVIDIA’s GPUs thrive. Dally says that dual, quad- and hex-core solutions are inefficient — he likens multi-core chips to “trying to build an airplane by putting wings on a train,” and says that only ground-up parallel solutions designed for energy efficiency will bring back the golden age of doubling performance every two years. That sounds fantastic, but as far as power consumption is concerned, well, perhaps NVIDIA had best lead by example.

webOS update coming soon, PDK apps likely to land

Well, what have we here? A friendly tipster, who just so happens to be a registered Palm developer, has sent us the latest informational email from the recently-swallowed outfit, and while the tone here may be gentle, the implications are certainly serious. According to the memo, a new webOS update is “coming soon,” and developers are being alerted that they’ll need to be prepared to test their apps when it hits. Sometime early this month, devs will receive a specific launch date for the SDK release candidate, and while we’re told that the “scope of the changes in this [forthcoming] update is limited,” it’ll be particularly important for coders to “test PDK apps against this release candidate.” Seems like that promise of seeing PDK apps hitting the Catalog by mid-year is on track, acquisition be darned.

iPhone / iPad ‘Spirit’ jailbreak released to the world

We’ve been seeing the iPad / iPhone Spirit jailbreak demoed here and there for a few weeks now, and here we go — the download is now available. The untethered jailbreak works on activated iPhone OS devices running 3.1.2, 3.1.3, and 3.2, although iPad owners are warned that “all this is still sort of beta” and might require you to restore if things break. That’s not the worst thing in the world, we suppose — anyone taking the plunge?

CyberNotes: How to Schedule your Computer to Wake-up from Standby or Hibernation

This article was written on March 15, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Tutorial Thursday

More and more people are deciding not to shutdown their computers after each use because they don’t want to wait for their computer to boot back up the next time they want to use it. For the sake of conserving energy, maybe I can get you to put your computer into stand-by or hibernation each night when you go to bed. Right now you’re thinking about having to wait for your computer to bootup in the morning when you’re just itching to get on the Internet.

Why not just schedule your computer to wakeup when you want it to, maybe 5 minutes or so before you get up each morning? That way your computer will be ready to go as you stumble down the stairs trying to find your way to the pot of coffee.

The program that I have for you is a simple no-installation required application that will do exactly what you need. In just a few seconds you can have your computer setup to turn back on at a designated time throughout the day. All you have to do is remember to put your computer in stand-by or hibernation when you go to bed and the application will do the rest…

  1. Download the program from the homepage or from our mirror.
  2. Once the download completes you just need to run the program…there is no installation required. You should see a screen similar to this one:
    Wakeup
  3. Choose from the different configuration options where you designate a time for your computer to wakeup as well as any programs you want to run. That means Firefox (or any other browser) can be up and running without you even needing to touch your computer!
  4. Hit Start to activate the program.

Once you have that all setup you should be ready to go! I do have a feature similar to this one in my BIOS that will allow me to schedule the computer to wakeup at a given time, but the extra options this program offers is well worth it. This version is said to work with Windows 98/ME/2000/NT/XP and I can confirm that it also works just fine on Vista. So go check it out. After all, there is nothing to install!
