Regional Retro Cider boom with new generation

At the recent BevTech Japan trade fair we caught a display of Japanese regional ciders (sadly, non-alcoholic) and loved the retro labels so much we wanted to share them here.

On the left below there is the Unzen Lemonade (温泉レモネード) from Nagasaki, complete with charming lass on the front. The bottles on the right are the beet cider Sepia no Shigeki (セピアのしげき), from Hokkaido.

Local Japanese cider is apparently experiencing a minor boom. Asahi’s Mitsuya Cider might well be the only one you can see in your convenience store but, according to the Japan Soft Drink Association, the number of regional ciders has increased from 62 in 2007 to nearly 130.

The success of Showa era films like Always has made even younger consumers yearn for “nostalgic” tastes (including when the nostalgia is for a time before they were born).

Recent bloggers have also highlighted growing sales and the incredible variety of flavors from around the country. At BevTech alone we saw a wide range, including apricot, takoyaki, mango and yuzu drinks. Certainly beats endless variations of canned coffee!

Given that many of the ciders are completely new products, this “retro” could be said to purely be about the packaging and not much else. Another sure way to attract young consumers, though, is pricing: the drinks come pretty cheap, most bottles costing 2-300 yen ($2-3).

We also like the Kamen Rider series of ciders too (above, left), which taps nostalgia not so much for furusato (old hometown) tastes but retro pop culture.

PLX USB Duet: your netbook is now a cumbersome iPad keyboard

We preface this post by saying we don’t know how practical this really is, but PLX’s idea of using a netbook’s keyboard to type on the iPad is definitely an intriguing one. How does it all work? Well, it relies on the company’s USB Duet technology, but the setup isn’t exactly what we’d call streamlined. You’ll need a netbook like the Fujitsu MH380 or NEC LaVie Light with the built-in PLX chipset / mini-USB port, an iPad with the camera connection kit, and of course the applicable USB Duet software. Regardless, the demo we saw today at the Netbook Summit worked fairly well. When all was said and done, we laid the iPad on top of the netbook’s screen and we were able to use the keyboard to type in Safari and in Notes faster than when we were pecking on the virtual keyboard. Additionally, PLX says the same USB feature enables you to use the netbook’s speakers as well as transfer files from the iPad to the laptop without iTunes (we should note here that USB duet also allows you to hook up a netbook to other laptops to transfer files, etc.). Truth is, we could debate the value of this iPad hook-up for quite a few hours, but instead we’ll just direct you to the video and press release after the break, and then let you duke it out for yourselves in the comments.

Proposed class action settlement would let you unlock almost any AT&T handset — except the iPhone

So the good news is that a class action lawsuit out in Cali is on the cusp of coming to a resolution, and the resolution will require AT&T to provide an unlock code for just about any phone it has sold since March 12, 1999 — in other words, you’ll be able to take the phone and use it on any GSM carrier of your choice. We say “just about” because there’s one big exception — any phone for which AT&T secured an exclusivity period of at least ten months — which naturally includes the iPhone (in fact, it’s called out by name in the settlement). There are some stipulations, too; if you’re postpaid, you have to have been a customer for at least 90 days, and even devices with exclusivity periods of less than ten months can’t be unlocked until the period is over (which admittedly makes good sense). Taking a Backflip somewhere else might not seem like a particularly appealing option, but who knows — maybe you’re a T-Mobile customer with a thing for backward hinges and a disdain for 3G.

Confirmed: Apple’s next iPhone will have video chat, feature to be shown in ads directed by Sam Mendes

Well this can’t be tremendously surprising. Apparently American Beauty director Sam Mendes is in the process of putting together a series of commercials for Apple’s next iPhone, which according to a tipster is being referred to internally as the Mammoth / N90. Besides that tip (with a handful of juicy details), a trusted source has confirmed to us that the ads will feature at least one spot where a mother and daughter are having a video chat conversation using the new front-facing camera that’s been spied on the face of that iPhone floating around Vietnam and Northern California. Adding weight to this story, a cursory search on Twitter revealed that there’s at least one actress who is up for a role in the “f***ing apple commercial” in New York, and another fellow who is auditioning for spots in California. We don’t know much more than that, but we’re fairly confident that this confirms video chat is coming to the next iPhone, and that that said iPhone isn’t very far from our grasp. Remember folks, June 7th is just a kiss away.

T-Mobile Garminfone looks confirmed for June 2 release

It seems that your wait for Garmin’s first T-Mobile-bound phone — the aptly-named Garminfone — might be a short one. We’d already known it was coming in June for $200, but this shot here makes it sounds like June 2 is the date you should start lining up in front of the store at four in the morning (we kid, we kid) for your shot at arguably the best turn-by-turn experience available on an Android phone today. You can get over the lack of Froyo and a 3.5mm headphone jack, right?

[Thanks, 0mie]

WSJ: Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division getting a ‘shakeup,’ J Allard expected to leave

We were surprised enough to hear tales of J Allard possibly leaving Microsoft, but the Wall Street Journal is painting a bigger picture, saying “the organizational shakeup is broader than Mr. Allard’s departure.” We’re taking that to mean there could be a larger changing of the guard here, particularly since the article is worded somewhat oddly and seems to imply the reshuffling could reach even Entertainment and Devices Division president Robbie Bach. As for Allard, WSJ reaffirms Mary Jo Foley’s earlier report that there’s a strong correlation between his departure and the Courier’s swan song. An announcement pertaining to these moves is said to potentially come as early this week, so stay tuned — this could be big.

PlayStation Move two-fer: Sony tells devs to avoid bad Wii clones, ad points to July release

There’s no question that PlayStation Move news is only going to get more frenzied in advance of E3, and it looks like things are already starting kick up a notch, with two stories recently surfacing that could shed a bit more light on what’s in store for Sony’s new motion controller. The first of those comes directly from Sony’s Rob Dyer, who told Gamasutra that the company has been “spending a lot of our time” going back to game developers and telling them what works and what doesn’t, and offering other helpful advice like “it didn’t work on the Wii for a reason” — the general idea there being that Sony doesn’t want Move developers simply churning out clones of bad Wii games. The second bit of news comes courtesy of New Zealand South African game retailer BT Games, which recently put out a flyer containing the notice above that suggests the Move could be coming as soon as this July. Of course, that conflicts with some earlier listings that pointed towards a September release (and Sony’s own word that it’s coming “this fall”), but this particular retailer does apparently have a bit of a history with leaks, having correctly confirmed the existence of the 250GB Xbox 360 Elite a few months before its release.

Comcast’s Tunerfish adds social media check-ins to your TV watching

Comcast’s Plaxo acquisition has borne fruit beyond its social media address book roots with Tunerfish, aimed at pulling social networking features and TV into one website. Currently in closed alpha, it lets TV watchers note what they’re watching and share with others, Foursquare style. No word on what being “mayor” of Chuck gets you (if it’s not a discount at Subway we’ll be disappointed) but the idea is to be able to keep an eye on what’s trending amongst the larger pool of viewers or just your friends (who, presumably, have similar tastes. Of course there’s Facebook and Twitter integration, and an iPhone app will be available when the beta launches in the next few weeks. Notably absent at this time is any Comcast branding, so it should be wide open no matter where you get your TV broadcasts from, but given the company’s interests in bringing together internet and TV we wouldn’t be surprised to see some Xfinity labeling work its way in sooner or later. Check out an epic 35-minute video interview with Robert Scoble (embedded after the break, demo starts about 10 minutes in) for more info, or just go ahead and sign up for the latest updates on the official site. It’s like we always say — if your followers & friends didn’t want to know what you were doing every second of every day, then why did they add you in the first place?

Walmart officially cuts iPhone 3GS to $97, potentially clearing out inventory for the iPhone 4?

Well, this is intriguing: Walmart just officially announced that it’ll be selling the 16GB iPhone 3GS for $97 starting Tuesday, a full $100 off the regular price. Given the high probability that Steve Jobs will introduce the thoroughly-leaked next-gen iPhone when he gives the WWDC 2010 keynote on June 7th, the price cut seems like either an attempt to clear out remaining inventory or a way to slide the 3GS down the line to replace the $99 8GB iPhone 3G — a move which would corroborate some whispers we’ve heard today that the 3G is no longer being shipped to stores. Either way, the 3GS just got a lot cheaper, which is never a bad thing, but we’d still say potential iPhone owners should wait a couple weeks and see what’s coming next.

[Thanks, Ryan]

Ooma Bluetooth Adapter ships, unites cellphone and VoIP in holy matrimony

The home VoIP gurus over at Ooma have started shipping their Bluetooth Adapter, a $29.95 dongle that you plug into your Telo to make awesome things happen. The accessory actually works two totally different ways: it makes it so that you can answer Ooma calls on your Bluetooth headset, and it also acts as a handsfree for your cellphone, letting you answer mobile calls on any landline receiver in your house — a pretty neat trick, if you ask us. The adapter’s only available online through Ooma’s site for the moment; follow the break for the company’s full press release.
