ZBuilder Ultra Delivers Rapid Plastic Models

Z-CORPORATION-ZBUILDER.jpgEven if you’ll never get your hands on one, and most of us won’t, you’ve got to admit these plastic model machines are way cool. Z Corporation just introduced the ZBuilder Ultra, a rapid prototyping machine that builds high-end functional prototypes at one-third the price of comparable machines.

With a machine like the ZBuilder Ultra, engineers can verify designs for form, fit, and function prior to full-scale production. It builds 3D parts additively using a high-resolution Digital Light Processor projector to solidify a liquid photopolymer. That’s in contrast to more expensive machines that use injection molding. The ZBuilder Ultra will be available in July for the low low cost of $34,900.

Griffin Offers Three Car Chargers for iPad

PowerJoltPlusiPad.jpg

It’s a long drive, so make sure you keep that iPad powered up. To help you out, the gadget kings at Griffin have unveiled three new devices. Well, three updated devices, since these are existing designs that have been updated the 2.1 amp charging level required by the iPad.

  • PowerJolt Plus for iPad (shown above; $29.99): This is the one for the car multi-tasker. Plug the PowerJolt into what used to be called the cigarette lighter but is now sometimes called the 12-volt accessory socket and you can plug another device into it. You’ll be able to charge two gadgets at once.
  • PowerJolt Micro for iPad ($24.99): There are two reasons to love this one: because it’s so compact and because it comes apart to reveal a standard USB plug which you can use to sync with your computer.
  • PowerJolt SE for iPad ($24.99): This simple charger works with your 12-volt accessory charger, and includes a lighted ring that lets you know when it’s ready to charge.
  • PowerDuo for iPad ($39.99): This combo pack includes the
PowerBlock wall charger and the PowerJolt for iPad.

Japanese gurus unveil 50TB magnetic tape cartridges, are officially ‘taking it way back’

It’s comical, really — we can’t get a decently powerful Atom to save our lives, but the absolutely thrilling world of magnetic tape storage is bounding ahead at a record pace. Priorities, people. For the archivists and A-type pack rats in the crowd, you’ll probably be atypically elated to know that Hitachi Maxell and the Tokyo Institute of Technology have teamed up in order to develop the world’s most capacious tape cartridges. Back in January, IBM and Fujifilm celebrated a momentary victory by announcing a 35TB version of this same product, but this record shattering attempt takes areal density to spaces never before ventured into in order to hit the magical 50TB mark. ‘Course, you’ll probably never see one outside of your state’s largest library, but at least that 3TB HDD you’re drooling over for your next PC seems so much more bodacious now. Oh, wait.

India’s 3G auction draws to a close

It’s been a long time coming, but after countless delays in getting the auction underway, bidding on nationwide 3G spectrum in the world’s second most populous market has ended — and four companies appear to have come out on top. Most of the Indian markets only had three licenses available, so you’ll likely be doing some roaming if you travel much, but Reliance, Bharti, Aircel, and Tata have all come away with significant swaths of airspace. And how much did it end up costing for the privilege of delivering high-speed wireless ’round these parts? After kicking off India-wide bidding for one slot at 35 billion rupees (about $773 million), the auction wrapped up at 167.51 billion rupees ($3.7 billion) after some 183 rounds of bidding in just over a month. Now, the hard part: actually building those 3G networks. Chop chop, guys!

Canon Rebel T2i Review: This Should Be Your First DSLR [Review]

Memjet Printers are (Finally) Here (Sort of)

Memjet Astro Machine M1.jpgIf you know what Memjet technology is, the title tells you most of what you need to know: Memjet printers are finally here (and I’ll get to the sort of part shortly). But let me start with a quick explanation for those who have forgotten about Memjet. Or never heard of it.

Memjet printing technology, a distinctly new variation on inkjets, was first unveiled in early 2007 along with some demo videos of spectacularly fast prototype printers. The promise was that Memjet printers could print letter-size output at 60 pages per minute that’s one page per second–and 1,,600-by-1600 dots per inch, with printers that were supposed to be available in 2008 for $200 to $300. Really. (If you want more details, take a look at the story I wrote at the time: The Future of Ink Jet Printing?)

After 2008 came and went without a Memjet printer, and then 2009 did the same, you might have been forgiven for deciding that Memjet printers were just vaporware that you’d never see in real life. So for all the skeptics out there, this announcement’s for you: In the last month, we’ve seen four Memjet printers announced in rapid succession.

That’s the good news. The bad news–the sort of” part–is that all four
are special-purpose label printers, from RENA Systems, Addressing and Mailing
Solutions
, Impression Technology Europe, and OWN-X Industrial.

So where are the home and office printers we were promised?

Barnes & Noble to open ‘PubIt!’ self-publishing portal this summer

Self-publishing has long since been possible through Amazon, but you won’t catch us kvetching about a little competition in the market place. In an attempt to do for indie writers what InstantAction has done for indie game developers, Barnes & Noble has just announced its intentions to open up a self-publishing portal this summer. We wouldn’t say that the PubIt! name is the greatest of all time (for a variety of reasons, frankly), but the world’s largest bookseller is hoping to expand its importance in the digital realm by giving wannabe authors the ability to upload and sell their material through B&N’s website and eBookstore. Details on the compensation model (read: profit split) will be announced “in the coming weeks,” but the real kicker here is this won’t be limited to the Nook; pretty much any e-reader, tablet or PC will be able to tap in and make purchases, so the potential audience is quite large. Hit that source link if you want to be notified when invitations are going out, and given just how close we are to this mythical “summer” thing, we’d suggest you start putting pen to paper — and fast.

[Thanks, Victor]
