2001: A Space Odyssey Monolith Action Figure

Here’s a paradox for you. The best action figure the world has ever known has no moving parts. Zero. It is not pose-able, it comes with no accessories and it has “zero points of articulation.” It is the Monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey, and it comes from – where else – ThinkGeek.

The block is 0.75 x 3 x 6.75-inches in size, which gives a ratio of 1:4:9, the same as the monolith in the movie and also the squares of the first three integers. It is also fashioned from “semisynthetic, organic, amorphous, solid materials (AKA plastic),” and “May cause strange magnetic fields, action figure evolution, seeing things filled with stars, and/or more (or it might just sit on your desk doing nothing).”

For me, though, the best thing is the packaging, which is pitch-perfect with the Star Wars action figures I had as a kid. The “Kubrick” logo down at the bottom looks like the “Kenner” that branded imports to the UK (the official brand there was Palitoy), and the absolute kicker is the flash, top left on the box: “It’s Full of Stars!”

You can have this plastic galactic enigma now, for just $13, or less than trip to the moon.

Official: Samsung Galaxy Tab $600 on Verizon

Samsung has announced the price of its iPad rival, the Galaxy Tab. It will cost $600 and come contract-free on Verizon’s 3G network. A data plan is optional and will cost $20 per month for 1 GB, and the tablet will be available to buy on November 11th.

It’s an interesting price, coming in at just $30 shy of the cheapest iPad 3G, but with a screen just half the size. You do get a couple of cameras, though — 3 MP back and 1.3 MP front — as well as the latest Android OS 2.2 Froyo running on Cortex A8 a 1-GHz CPU.

I can’t guess how this will go. Samsung has, after all, sold 5 million of its Galaxy S phones in just three months, and many people will surely appreciate the pocketability of the smaller form factor. On the other hand, the iPad can now be had on Verizon for around the same price, although you do have to use the MiFi hotspot to get Verizon 3G.

One thing is certain. The Galaxy Tab is the first really viable alternative to the iPad, and it will show us if the non-nerd public is willing to buy tablets in general like they do cellphones, or if they are only interested in Apple’s, as happened with its dominant iPad market. We’ll see soon enough.

AlphaUi Back-Type keyboard for tablets will never catch on, but we wish it would

You know, traditionally we try to be thankful for stuff like slim device profiles and innovative touch UIs, particularly with Thanksgiving coming up soon, but every once in a while we shake a fist against the aesthetics of our time and wish for an alternate history that had rerouted us to a 2010 full of IBM-built keyboards and buttons galore. AlphaUi’s Back-Type, which has been making the rounds for a couple weeks, is just such a technology, with 24 anachronistically tactile keys on the back designed for a bit of blind typing that engages eight fingers instead of the typical two thumbs. It’s not an entirely new idea, Grippity’s been talking about rear mounted keys for a while, and Microsoft Research just put out a clunker of a prototype, but AlphaUi’s version seems the most mature and usable. Right now the keyboard is being demoed on the rear of 7-inch Archos tablets, but AlphaUi will be showing off the tech at CES and probably courting a hardware partner if they haven’t found one already. Check out a video of the tech after the break.

Opera Browser For Wii Expected Friday

This article was written on December 19, 2006 by CyberNet.

Back in September, we wrote about Opera’s plans for a browser specifically for devices like the Sony Mylo, Mood Box, and yes, even Nitendo’s Wii.  The mobile market is something that not many other companies have appeared to be interested in. Today in their latest press release, Opera has announced that a trial version will be available on Friday, December 22.

While this is just a trial version, the final version of Opera is expected around the end of March, 2007.  That too will be free to download until the end of June.  From there, if you’re wanting the browser, you’ll need to visit the Wii Shop Channel and purchase it for 500 Wii Points.

Scott Hedrick, Vice President of Devices at Opera says that “Our software brings the power and reach of the Internet to the hottest video game system available.” Their browser for devices is perfect for the varying screen sizes, and supports popular web technologies like AJAX. One thing I like about Opera is that their press releases are short, sweet, and to the point. They’re pretty laid back, and they even take the time for some fun, like in this press release with the comic above.

Anyhow, expect the trial version on Friday and let us know how it is!

RIM CEO Jumps on Steve Jobs Bashing Dogpile

jim_balsilie.jpg

Steve, Steve, Steve. You really stirred up the pot this time, didn’t you? You couldn’t just leave well enough alone? Peter Oppenheimer and Tim Cook were doing perfectly well, running down Apple’s triumphant numbers during the earnings call early this week, but you had to jump on the line and poke fun at the competition.

Google’s Andy Rubin was the first to respond to Jobs’s comments that the whole Android openness thing is overrated. TweetDeck CEO Iain Dodsworth also came to Android’s defense, after his company ended up becoming fallout in Jobs’s assertions. Both men responded on Twitter, naturally.

We all knew it was just a matter of time before a Research in Motion executive hit back at Jobs over his comments. After all, the Apple chief kicked off his statement with a little friendly BlackBerry bashing,

[Apple’s sales figures] handily bea[t] RIM’s 12.1 million BlackBerrys sold, in their most recent quarter ending in August. We’ve now passed RIM. And I don’t see them catching up to us in the foreseeable future.

They must look beyond their area of strength and comfort, into the unfamiliar territory of trying to become a software platform company. I think it’s going to be a challenge for them, to create a competitive platform, and to convince developers to create apps for yet a third software platform after iOS and Android. With 300,000 apps on Apple’s App Store, RIM has a high mountain ahead of them to climb.

Screen Grabs: Dell Streak recruited into NCIS:LA for some undercover duty, fights evil Adamo XPS

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Dell’s product placement deal with CBS apparently doesn’t stipulate whether its gadgets will be used for good or evil, as illustrated by their cameo appearances on the network’s NCIS:LA crime drama. In last night’s episode, lead do-gooder Special Agent Callen is seen preparing a Streak tabletphone for some audio recording action before a meeting with the baddies — who in turn whip out an Adamo XPS (yes, it’s still alive!) to seal a deal for some ultra-advanced weaponry. Yep, it’s a non-stop cliché extravaganza!

[Thanks, James and Tarek]

Kanye West’s Teeth Replaced With Diamonds

It’s the sort of crazy rockstar hyperbole celebrity gossip blogs can usually only dream about. Kanye West, America’s favorite delightfully eccentric rap star, has outdone himself this time. The “Gold Digger” rapper had his entire bottom row of teeth ripped out and replaced with diamonds.

No joke.

West showed up on the Ellen show the other day and showed off his shiny, expensive new smile. “”I just thought the diamonds were cooler.” Damn right, Kayne. Now what to do about those pesky fleshy organs? Prada, perhaps?

West followed up the Ellen appearance with a tweet confirming his new his new chompers. “My teeth are real diamonds… these are not fronts… I replaced my bottom row of teeth with diamonds.”

Mercedes’ new Media Interface Plus is smartphone-friendly, Bluetooth-equipped, and Pandora-ready

Mercedes has a new $298 accessory available now that adds another level of smartphone compatibility to its existing in-vehicle controls of iPods and aux audio. The Media Interface Plus allows the car to stream audio from an iPhone, BlackBerry, or any other compatible Bluetooth music player (we’re guessing A2DP, though Mercedes doesn’t specify). The MIP can also control the Pandora app on the iPhone and BlackBerry, and other features like SMS and email reading / writing are forthcoming. There are iPod / iPhone and Mini-USB plugs for charging, and an optional cable can pull video from your iPhone as well and display it on your in-dash screen — when the car is at a standstill, of course.
