We occasionally run into a laptop that just rubs us the wrong way. Maybe it’s a key missing feature, or terrible design, or an unusable touch pad–or sometimes products simply don’t work as advertised. We’ve compiled our own list of the scariest laptops of 2010, the models that either had one or more frightening flaws, or else were just dogs.

It may not be quite the same obvious transition that Netflix made, but it looks like DVD kiosk company Redbox will soon be making a push of its own into the streaming business. That word comes straight from the CEO of parent company Coinstar, Paul Davis, who told listeners to the company’s recent earnings call that it is in “detailed negotiations with a number of highly interested parties” to launch a “Redbox-branded” streaming service sometime next year. That would seem to suggest that Redbox will be relying on a partner already established in the field rather than rolling its own service, but Davis was otherwise light on details, adding only that streaming represents a “significant opportunity” for the company. That doesn’t mean Redbox will be getting out of the kiosk business anytime soon, though — according to Davis, there’s still a “long, profitable life ahead” there.

Without too much hesitation, Microsoft continues to extend the date that XP will be available for the ultra low-cost PC’s. First they extended the date in April for low-cost laptops until 2010 because Vista usually requires too many resources to be run on them, but now the life of Windows XP has been extended for low-cost desktop PCs as well.
The general category of desktop computers that will have Windows XP installed on them are called Nettops (and the laptops are called netbooks), or in other words, desktops that are ultra low-cost. In the official Microsoft Press Release, they say:
“Customers and partners have made it clear to us that they want Windows on their netbooks and nettops. We are committed to providing Windows solutions for these devices, helping to ensure a high-quality experience for both our partners and customers.”
As PCWorld.com points out, an example of an ultra low-cost desktop PC that will be able to run XP is the Asus Eee Box which hasn’t hit the market quite yet, but will soon. Now that Microsoft has opened the doors for XP to be available on the low-cost laptops and desktops, will they end up specifying the hardware configurations that vendors can use with XP? These desktops are great for those who do very basic things like check email and browse the web, something a good chunk of computer users do and nothing more.
Knowing the strengths of XP, it will be a great operating system for these new netbooks and nettops which very well could be the next “big-thing” in the computer world. With the Eee PC gaining popularity and other computer companies creating their own version, all of the computer manufacturers are going to want to be selling Netbooks and Nettops and XP will continue to gain in popularity.

Earnings calls aren’t usually that interesting, and that’s doubly true when trying to listen via official translators. Still, we couldn’t help but give an ear to Sony’s fiscals, and sure enough, someone asked about our (still real) PlayStation Phone leak. We’re not sure who answered since it’s through interpreter, either Executive VP / CFO Masaru Kato or Senior General Manager of Investor Relations Division Gen Tsuchikawa (we’re assuming the former).
Citing the aforementioned device, the curious party asked if such a product would come out of Sony or of Sony Ericsson, and no, it wasn’t a complete denial. Instead, we’re told just how such a device would happen, that a gaming phone would be planned and prototyped under the (recently restructured) Network Services umbrella. We’re also told how SCE’s move to Sony City headquarters now puts them closer to the planning and engineering group, meaning the company “can better incorporate all these capabilities better… so when the timing is right we can probably announce to you the new product we have.” Ericsson is later cited as a resource “on smartphone and for the games devices,” although this might be something peculiar with translation. Again, that’s far from a confirmation, but they’re certainly entertaining the notion in a very, very detailed response.
But that’s not all; there’s also apparently a tablet brewing in the background, one that would obviously fall somewhere in between PC and Sony Ericsson’s efforts. With only one day left before Mr. Stacie Bakalar’s wedding, we’re sure Jeff is busy getting prepared for tomorrow’s celebration. The elusive Verizon iPhone is going to become a reality early next year, according to a chorus of mainstream publications.
Following The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Bloomberg, now Fortune claims that a Verizon iPhone is “fait accompli” (i.e., a done deal).
Repeating past rumors, Fortune says the new iPhone will be compatible with Verizon’s CDMA network. Fortune notes that globetrotters won’t be able to use the phone outside the United States: Most international networks rely on the GSM standard, so the Verizon iPhone can’t be used as a “world phone.”
Tech observers and analysts have squabbled about a Verizon iPhone for years, and the device appears to be forthcoming. Perhaps the most telling sign was when Verizon announced earlier this month that it would sell Apple’s iPads — a move that reveals that Apple and Verizon are finally partners.
