Boxee Review: Good At One Thing, Bad At Everything Else [Video]

Theoretically, Boxee is like a cheaper Google TV that can play back every file type imaginable, as well as stream internet videos through its browser + Flash player setup. In reality, it only does one of those things well. More »

Sony working on same-screen 3D multiplayer, holographics for PS3?

Don’t go knockin’ Sony for resting on its laurels. The company that has spearheaded the 3D gaming push (NVIDIA notwithstanding) is apparently not even close to finished, with SCEE studio director Mick Hocking taking the time to get our juices flowing in an interview with Develop. The full spill is quite lengthy, and definitely a solid read for those interested, but a few key nuggets jumped out at us. For starters, Mike confessed that Sony has “techniques like holographics for the PS3 that [he thinks] will be very interesting for the future 3D games,” and continued with this: “In regards to that we have some new technology that we’ve shown to developers that uses 3D techniques, it allows two players to play full screen multi-player games but without each being able to see the others view, and they have been massively keen on them.” Of course, such a technique isn’t exactly new — we saw prototypes of the sort in use back at GDC — but bringing them to a market as vast as the PS3 owner pool would definitely be a monumental step. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’ve got a Gran Turismo 5 disc laying here that needs our undivided attention for the time being.. .

Nissan Unveils Fuel Saving Pedal System

Nissan Fuga Hybrid.jpg

Nissan is doing more to help the environment than just releasing the Leaf, as the auto maker has also recently unveiled a new type of pedal that actually helps drivers use less fuel. Developed in conjunction with Mikuni Corporation, a Japanese auto parts manufacturer, the pedal provides resistance, so the driver will be less inclined to push it all the way down.

Aptly dubbed the ECO Pedal system, the technology was developed for the Nissan Fuga, a luxury car currently only available in Japan. And according to the auto manufacturer, the system is able to improve fuel efficiency by anywhere from five to 10 percent. Though it’s currently only being used for the Fuga, Nissan plans to expand the system to other vehicles in its line as well. Additionally, the technology can now be licensed by other companies as well, letting other car companies get in on the fuel saving action as well.

iPad Tops Wish Lists For Kids 6-12

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for ipadnytimes.jpg

I’m trying to imagine what I might have done with an iPad at age six–it most likely would have involved crushing a lot of action figures with the thing. Naturally, kids today are for more savvy than in the primitive 1980s when I grew up. According to a new study from Nielsen, Apple’s tablet is the most requested gift for kids aged six to 12.

According to Nieslen’s numbers, 31-percent of children aged six to 12 are “interested in buying” an iPad in the next six months. Again, I’m not sure what allowances are like these days, but I image most of the kids who fall within that bracket are going to need a little extra help from the parents.

Number two on the list is the generic “computer,” followed by the iPod touch. Gaming consoles don’t even enter into it until the number four spot, the Nintendo DS, which is followed by the PS 3. Also on the list: the iPhone, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, PlayStation Move, Blu-Ray player, and Xbox 360.

The aforementioned generic computer topped the list for those surveyed above the age of 13. Also in the top five: television set, non-iPhone smartphone, the iPad (at 18 percent), and a Blu-ray player.

Smartfish Whirl Mini Notebook Laser Mouse review, now on sale for $50

Back when we first locked eyes with the Smartfish ErgoMotion Mouse at CES we knew there was something totally unique about it. No, it didn’t have a touch strip or 18 buttons, but thanks to its “pivot system,” it did tilt in every which-way. Created by a former chiropractor, the laser mouse tilts in all directions, but not with the aim of moving the cursor or controlling anything on screen as one would think. It wobbles for one reason and one reason only: to relieve arm tension and reduce the risk of Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI). Today the company’s releasing a smaller, more mobile version of ErgoMotion, now called the Whirl Mini, for $49.95. So, is it what the doctor ordered? Or is it just another odd looking peripheral to add to the collection? We’ve been using it as our primary mouse for the last week, so you’ll want to hit the break to find out.

Flickr Photo of the Day: What’s in Your Bag?

This article was written on August 08, 2007 by CyberNet.

We all rely on at least one technology device or another that we don’t go anywhere without each day like cell phones, laptops, MP3 players, calculators, Pocket PC’s, and the list goes on. I came across a bunch of pictures on Flickr that showed what people were carrying in their bag, and it got me curious about what you carry in yours. Now, I know not everybody carries a bag with them, so in general, what is it that you carry with you on a regular basis whether it be in a computer bag, brief case, purse, or pocket?

I’ll get the ball rollin’ with a picture of what Ryan regularly carries in his bag, and then a few of the Flickr pictures I came across. But like I said, I’m wondering what you’ve got in your bag, so here’s the deal: either you can list what you have in your bag, pocket, etc., in the comments below, or you can head on over to this forum post that I’ve set-up so that you can upload your picture and show us what you’ve got! You DO NOT have to be a registered user in the forum to add a picture. Just click “reply” and look for the “image uploader.”

In Pictures: Philadelphia Eagles New Green Stadium

Eagles 2.jpg

Last week the Philadelphia Eagles announced that they would be retrofitting their home stadium Lincoln Financial Field into something much more green. And while the eco-friendly makeover won’t be completed until September of next year, the football club has released a pair of concept images that show what the stadium will look like.

The images show the 80, spiral shaped wind turbines that will be mounted along the edges of the stadium’s roof, while large solar panel installations will be located on the exterior of the building. The whole installation will cost an estimated $30 million, but is also expected to save the club nearly $60 million in energy savings over its lifespan.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell believes that the Eagles will be just the first of many NFL clubs to go initiate this type of environmentally friendly stadium upgrade. “The NFL is one of the most competitive clubs in the world,” he said. “That’s because our clubs are competitive with one another.”
