Infinity I-Kitchen sports Linux-based touch screen computer, kitchen sink still not included

We’ve seen ridiculous fridge concepts from Electrolux before and covered Linux running on all types of gadgets, so it’s only natural that the OS has found its way into an icebox developed by Electrolux’s Brazilian subsidiary in partnership with ProFusion Embedded Systems. Dubbed the Infinity I-Kitchen, it sports a Linux-based 800 x 480 touchscreen computer built around a 400Mhz Freescale i.MX25 SoC — which itself is based on 400MHz ARM926EJ-S core and already used in some automotive systems. The touch UI was developed by the open source organization Enlightenment Foundation Libraries and allows users to control a variety of fridge functions like internal temperature in addition to running apps for notes, calendars, contacts, photos, and recipes. All of the particular open source code modifications developed for the fridge have also been shared back with the community in Tux-approved fashion and will soon be posted to Electrolux’s site too. Unfortunately, there’s no mention however of features like internet connectivity (WiFi or otherwise), USB ports, or SD Card slots being on the appliance. Likewise, details on pricing or availability are also unknown, so your iPhone can hold off on making those the jealousy-fueled fat jokes for now.

Naked Lady Freaks Out Plane

airplane_slap.jpg

I mean, they’re probably all going to see you naked any way, right? Over the weekend, a passenger on a flight from Chicago stripped naked as the plane began its descent into New York’s JFK Airport.

When crew of the flight attempted to calm her, the woman reportedly began to shout “No! No! No!” Once the plane landed in New York, the “emotionally disturbed” woman was taken into custody by the New York Port Authioty.

After landing, the woman was taken to New York’s Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. She will likely not be charged. Despite the timing, the incident does not seem to be connected to recent protests of airport security.

The Most Spectacular Christmas Trees, Compared [Christmas]

Today, Rockefeller Center switches on its towering holiday gift to New York: a 74-foot spruce draped with 30,000 lights and 5 miles of wire. But New York’s tree is not actually the biggest or the brightest on the block. More »

Spray-On Stem Cell Treatment for Burn Victims

stemcells.png

Imagine a world where serious skin wounds could be healed with an over-the-counter spray-on battle. A University of Utah pilot project is showing some amazing early results with just that concept in mind.

Cardiothoracic surgeon Amit Patel and burn care surgeon Amalia Cochran are overseeing experimental procedures utilizing this new “bedside stem cell technique.” By combining a patient’s own cells with a few other chemicals thrown in, the research team is able to create a sort of bio jelly that can be sprayed directly onto a wound. Preliminary trials have shown some promising results at accelerating the healing process.

Researchers are starting with small burns and hope to move on to larger injuries in future trials. In the future, research like this may lead to actual regenerated skin tissues created from a patient’s own cells that could be grafted onto large injuries.

Palin Compares WikiLeaks to Gawker, al Qaeda

sarah_palin_america_book.jpg

Sarah Palin has a few choice words when it comes to the way that the Obama administration has handled its on-going Wikileaks issue. The former governor wondered aloud (via Twitter) why the government has failed to address the Wikileaks problem in the same manner she nipped the leak of her upcoming book on Gawker.

“Inexplicable: I recently won in court to stop my book ‘America by Heart’ from being leaked, but US Govt can’t stop Wikileaks’ treasonous act?” Palin asked on Twitter.

It was Palin’s publisher HarperCollins that stopped the leak, filing a complaint against the gossip site. The judge in the case ordered the immediate removal of the pages from the site.

Palin has also taken her WikiLeaks concerns to her Facebook page. In a post titled “Serious Questions about the Obama Administration’s Incompetence in the WikiLeaks Fiasco,” Palin compared the site to terrorist organizations like al Qaeda,

What steps were taken to stop Wikileaks director Julian Assange from distributing this highly sensitive classified material?” she asked. “Why was he not pursued with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders?

Sony ships 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers to retailers (updated)

A little press release from none other than Sony informed us this morning that the company has shipped 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers worldwide. Alas, that number has been widely misreported as the tally of direct end-user sales, which it most definitely is not. What Sony’s letting us know is total wands that have left its warehouses on their way to retailers, a number that’s one step removed from actual sales results. Still, if you simply must have something to compare against Microsoft’s 2.5 million Kinect sales, there you have it.

Update: Our brothers at Joystiq have reached out to Sony and confirmed that these numbers represent shipped units, not consumer sales. Here’s Joystiq’s exact wording on the (seemingly purposefully) confusing situation:

A Sony representative explained that the 4.1 million actually represents Move units shipped to stores, adding “While we don’t disclose our exact sell-through number, the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales.” Which, you know, would have been a cool thing to put in that press release, we think.

Update 2: We’ve also confirmed with Sony that the sales numbers are in reference to retailers, not consumers, and learned that more than 75 percent of the sales in the US are bundles — meaning new console sales or software groupings.

The hard drive contains 650 issues of the magazine, while offering up 200GB of extra storage for your Norman Mailer essays and Penthouse Forum letters. The hard drive was designed in conjunction with Bondi, the company behind similar offerings from The New Yorker and Rolling Stone.

Übergeek German Vandals Egg Houses That Opt Out of Google Street View

googlestreetview.png

Little known fact about German street thugs–they’re not like the rapscallions of other nations. As it turns out, they’re big ol’ nerds who only victimize those who fall behind on today’s ultra-transparent information autobahn.

Recently, Deutchland officials voiced privacy concerns about the Street View feature of Google Maps which offers a ground level, 360-degree photo from nearly any vantage point along any street. In a concession, Google offered to blur out the residences of any Germans who wanted to opt-out of the feature.

Sounds like a fair balance right?

Not according to one group of geeky gangstas. An unidentified person or persons went around the city of Essen throwing eggs at homes that appeared obscured in Google Maps. They then proceeded to leave notes outside the properties proclaiming “Google’s cool” in English.

Google’s official stance on the nerdiest form of vandalism that has ever been committed: “We respect people’s decision to opt out and by no means consider this to be acceptable behavior.”

No word on if there have been any threats against those who maintain aol email accounts or people who still “RT” things on Twitter instead of using the embedded re-tweet feature.

Virgin officially announces Project magazine for iPad (and iPhone soon)

We’re here at Virgin’s press event for Project magazine, which Sir Richard Branson just called the “first all-digital magazine.” It’s launching on iPad first, then on the iPhone, but we also snuck a peek at the app last night and noticed a line about Android tablet support coming soon. Branson says the content will change constantly — there’ll even be comments, and sharing features are said to be “coming soon.” Mapping features will be introduced in the iPhone version, which the Project editor-in-chief describes only as “all the coolest places in the world mapped by our users.” Pricing for the iPad version is set at $2.99 per month, with the app updating throughout the period with new content and features. When asked about Rupert Murdoch’s The Daily, Branson responded that “this is not a battle, not a war, but the future of publishing,” while his chief editor had this to say: “We’re not similar … they’re a daily newspaper, we’re a monthly style magazine … we wish them nothing but luck.”
