Jays flexes its design muscle with svelte a-JAYS Four earbuds

Tired of finding every set of decent ‘buds only available in the stereotypical white? Hello, beautiful! Jays has just outed its latest set of earbuds, the a-JAYS Four, and it seems that simplicity is the theme here. These guys rely on flat, tangle-free cabling and include an inline three-button remote that’s made for use with Apple’s iPod, iPhone and iPad. You’ll also get five different eartip selections, a handy L-shaped 3.5mm plug, MEMS microphone and a pair of 8.6mm speaker drivers that handle frequencies between 20Hz and 21,000Hz. Regrettably, we’ve no price or release date to share, but hopefully that’ll be cleared up in short order.

Update: Jays hit us up with the two most important details: $69.99, shipping to America in January 2011.

Voyager 1 Nears End of Solar System

voyager1.jpg

It’s been cruising space for 33 years, for a total of almost 11 billion miles, and now the Voyager 1 is close to hitting a major milestone.. NASA announced this week that, in four years, the spacecraft will leave the end of our solar system.

The probe has been at the mercy of solar winds since 2004, being bombarded by charged particles traveling at one million miles an hour. The speeds of the winds have since slowed to zero, leading scientists to believe that the craft is now headed toward the end of the solar system.

“It’s telling us the heliopause is not too far ahead,” NASA project scientist Edward Stone said in a statement. The heliopause is the area of space where the sun’s solar winds are no longer strong enough to push against the wind of other surrounding stars.

Microsoft Lets Users Test Drive Office 2007 Online

If you don’t want to download and install the free Microsoft Office 2007 Beta 2 then you can take it for a test drive online. Microsoft has setup a complete simulation environment that lets you completely test each of their Office 2007 products:

  • Microsoft Office Access 2007
  • Microsoft Office Excel 2007
  • Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007
  • Microsoft Office OneNote 2007
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2007
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager
  • Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access
  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007
  • Microsoft Office Project Professional 2007
  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2007
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007
  • Microsoft Office Visio 2007
  • Microsoft Office Word 2007
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services
  • Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 (should be available soon)
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007

The testing environment is currently very busy and you will probably have to wait in line if you want to give it a shot. There was no wait time when I accessed it the first time but when I went back it was a 17 minute delay. I am sure that the service will continue to get busy as more and more people find out about this, so go and “stand” in line now if you want to try it! Oh yeah, it requires Internet Explorer (surprise surprise) since it has to install an ActiveX plug-in.

Thanks Jason!

Ridgid Jobsite iPod Radio takes a beating, survives long enough to go on sale (video)

So, you’ve celebrated the landing of yet another construction deal by giving the whole crew their own Motorola Defy (except for Derick, who’s saddled with a lowly i365), but there’s still one problem: on-the-job entertainment. Enter Ridgid’s Jobsite Radio, hailed as the first iPod-toting boombox designed to withstand just about anything. As you can tell, the device itself is encased in a ShockMount layer of protective armor, and we have to stress the “armor” aspect. Users simply flip down the lid in the front, slide their iPod in and then change tracks via on-board external controls or remote control from up to 25 feet away. Oh, and if Joe or Buck just so happens to bring their Zune HD into work, the 3.5mm auxiliary input will ensure that no one is publicly shamed. The unit is powered by a standard 120V or Ridgid 18V battery, and if you’re curious as to just how hardcore this thing is, there’s an enlightening video embedded just after the break. She’s all yours after dropping $149 at the Home Depot.

[Thanks, Thomas]

Axe Maker’s Kit Perfect for the Psychopath in Your Life

The Wetterlings Axe Maker’s Kit from Best Made is probably the most macho and romantic gift you could give this Christmas, the polar opposite of a DVD of any movie starring Jennifer Aniston.

It’s perfect: You’re snowed in for the winter, far from anywhere, your husband enjoying the solitude for his writing. You already got your son Danny’s gift – a beautiful tricycle. Why not give Jack – or Johnny, as you like to call him – an axe he can make himself? What could possibly go wrong?

The kit contains the axe-head, a hand-forged six-incher from Wetterlings in Sweden (where thy know about long, snowy winters) and a pair of rough-cut American hickory shafts. The idea is that Johnny will soothe his feelings of lonely isolation and whittle these sticks into handles. Hell, with the stubble he’s got since he gave up shaving, he could probably shape the wood with his chin.

The kit costs $140, easy to afford with all that money they gave you to spend the winter in the Overlook Hotel, and comes with wedges and sandpaper. A forthcoming addition to the kit will be a spokeshave to form those rough cuts into beautiful curves, but you could pick one of those up from any hardware store.

So go ahead and buy Jack that axe, and maybe he’ll get it in his head to do some remodeling in the bathroom.

Michael Moore Posting Bail Money for Julian Assange

michael-moore-fahrenheit-91.jpg

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore this morning announced that he will be contributing $20,000 to help bail WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange out of jail.

The Fahrenheit 911 director didn’t go too far into the sexual assault charges for which Assange is being held, instead using the opportunities to extol the virtues of his site, calling support of WikiLeaks “true patriotism.”

“Just imagine if the men who planned this war crime back in 2002 had had a WikiLeaks to deal with,” wrote Moore. They might not have been able to pull it off. The only reason they thought they could get away with it was because they had a guaranteed cloak of secrecy. That guarantee has now been ripped from them, and I hope they are never able to operate in secret again.”

Moore also promised to offer “my website, my servers, my domain names and anything else I can do to keep WikiLeaks alive and thriving as it continues its work to expose the crimes that were concocted in secret and carried out in our name and with our tax dollars.”

Security Camera Captures Naked Man in Mississippi Cemetery

security-camera1.jpg

We’ve all been there, right? Late night at a cemetery in Mississippi–you want to get in touch with the spirits, so you shed a few layers. That’s exactly what happened to one Robert Hurst. The 47-year-old was hanging out in a south Mississippi cemetery. He stripped naked (naturally) because it turns out that human skin is “best canvas to show spirits’ orbs of energy,” according to the Washington Post.

The footage was captured on security cams set up to capture vandals. Hurst isn’t being charged with that, be he was held for misdemeanor indecent exposure. He turned himself in on Friday and post $500 bond.

He told the press that the whole taking off his clothes in the cemetery decision was a “stupid” one.

Shigeru Miyamoto profiled: legendary game designer, interior decorating enthusiast

Using traditional conversion metrics, The New Yorker’s got ten pictures worth of words on Nintendo’s iconic designer Shigeru Miyamoto, arguably the father of modern video games whose cerebral impulses have spawned the likes of Mario and Legend of Zelda. Don’t expect any bombshell news (spoiler: the company’s hard at work on a portable, glasses-free 3D console), but it’s definitely a thorough and entertaining read on the origins of Nintendo’s gaming interests and Miyamoto himself. Bonus: given how Miyamoto’s non-work time with exercise and gardening became the inspiration for WiiFit and Pikmin, feel free to overanalyze how his fixation with moving around his living room will turn into the next multi-platinum title.
