Sony asks for restraining order against Geohot, fail0verflow over PS3 exploits

We knew Sony would be non-plussed about the PlayStation 3 jailbreak, and now we have a better idea as to the full extent of its anger. The company has filed suit (not yet, see below) asked for a restraining order against George “Geohot” Hotz, the “hacking group” fail0verflow (Hector Cantero, Sven Peter, “Bushing,” and “Segher”), and numerous John / Jane Does over the exploit and its release. To be more specific, the company cites violations of Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, various copyright infringements, and other acts of binary malfeasance. A temporary restraining order has also been sought, asking that all “circumvention tools” be taken offline and his computers and related media (i.e. anything storing said tools) be impounded. It looks like Geohot’s servers are being slammed at the moment, so we’ve gone ahead and hosted the relevant PDFs ourselves below. We’re still sifting through ourselves and will let you know what we unearth.

Update:
Nilay here — let’s take a look at what’s going on. This isn’t a “lawsuit” in the traditional sense, since Sony hasn’t filed a complaint for copyright infringement or whatever against Geohot and friends. Instead, the company appears to be trying to shove the genie back in the bottle and have the jailbreak and any information about the jailbreak removed from the web by filing a temporary restraining order. That might work in the short term — Geohot’s already pulled his pages down — but history suggests that the forces of paperwork rarely triumph over the righteous anger of nerds, and that this code is out there for good. That said, we’ll see what the court says tomorrow; although we very much doubt Sony’s melodramatic proposed motion and order will be granted as written, we wouldn’t be surprised if some sort of order is eventually granted — and then from there a formal lawsuit is likely just a few days away.

Rabbit Trends: Cafés, Coins and Bars

2011 is the Year of the Rabbit and also the fortieth anniversary of Japanese debut of the character Peter Rabbit, much loved by locals. On top of the expected bunny-themed New Year Cards there are some other manifestations of the year’s animal making the news at the moment.

Shibuya Usagi (Shibuya Rabbit) is a bar and restaurant in Tokyo serving tapas and other cuisine that you can partly pay for using special currency called “Usagi Coins” (Rabbit Coins). Regular customers are awarded the bunny-decorated money and can then exchange them on later visits for discounts on certain menu items. If they can bear to part with the cute coins, that is.

You might have heard about cat cafés in Japan but what about an Usagi Café? Inside customers can enjoy their drinks and snacks alongside 11 rabbits, including the inevitable Peter Rabbit-esque breeds. This new café in Yokohama does not actually seem to be the first of its kind, with similar rabbit cafés in Nagoya, Tokyo and Kamakura at least, where patrons can bring their own bunnies or play with other furry friends while enjoying a cup of tea.

The Usagi Café is only open on weekends and holidays, costing from 800 yen (about $9.60) for 30 minutes (including a drink). It is actually a kind of section inside a regular cat café (Neko Café) and during the week feline-loving patrons can play with the bunnies for an extra charge.

Notion Ink Adam delayed pending FCC certification

Just when it seemed the Notion Ink Adam had escaped the pit of dubious pre-orders and moved onto the glowing preview stage, here comes another hurdle to trip up its 10-inch PixelQi screen. Android Police reports that US buyers have received email notifications that their orders are ready to ship out, except for that little matter of FCC approval. We’ve yet to see the Adam pass the FCC — perhaps because it hasn’t done so quite yet — and the tablet will need to have its paperwork in order and be properly labeled before it can be imported into the US. Notion Ink insists that all the red tape will be taken care of “within this week,” and that some international orders have already shipped out. We’re hoping that’s the case — we’d hate to think of all those poor slates sitting in boxes, instead of getting some sun.

WVIL’s unbelievable 31 megapixel cameraphone is unbelievably fake, attempts pathetic viral campaign (update)

Honestly, we never thought people could get this high and drunk in Vegas, but the guys from WVIL were really pushing it. Their crime? A blatantly staged viral campaign for an “unbelievable” smartphone that sports a 31 megapixel CMOS full frame sensor. Oh, and it has an interchangeable lens, too, with which you can use the main body as a wireless viewfinder (like the Samsung SH100 paired up with an Android phone). Nice concept, WVIL, just too bad your mom called to disown you at CES. Video after the break.

Update: The Artefact Group, a Seattle design firm, just emailed to inform us that the idea is their own — see the whole concept at our more coverage link below.

Microsoft Windows Vista 5365 Tips And Tricks

If you jumped on the bandwagon and downloaded Vista 5365 then you might find some use in these tips and tricks. They offer some fixes to some major annoyances like how to disable the User Account Protection. There are a total of 6 tips:

  1. Show network activity on the taskbar
  2. Disable Security Center Alerts
  3. Stop SearchIndexer.exe from annoying you
  4. Configure the Weather gadget
  5. Disable “You have files ready to be burned to a disc” popup
  6. Toggle User Account Control (On/Off)

My favorite two tips are numbers 5 & 6 so I decided to recap those.

———
If you are constantly getting a popup stating that you have files to burn, this is how you disable it:

  1. Press WinKey+R and type “gpedit.msc” (without the quotes).
  2. Navigate to: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer
  3. In the right hand pane, double click on “Remove CD Burning features”
  4. Set the value to “Enabled” and press OK.

———
Getting rid of the User Account Protection is a tough choice because it does make your computer more secure. This is what constantly pops up every time you try to change something in the Control Panel or try to execute an un-verified file.

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click “System and Maintenance”
  3. Scroll down and click “Administrative Tools”.
  4. Double click on “System Configuration”.
  5. If prompted to launch the System Configuration Utility, click “Continue”.
  6. In the System Configuration window, click on the “Tools” tab.
  7. Select either “Disable UAP” or “Enable UAP” from the list and click Launch.

———

Of course the fun doesn’t stop there. Make sure you head over to DigitalFive.org and check out the rest of the tweaks!
