Kongregate makes triumphant return to Android Market after a few tweaks

After Google’s uncharacteristic (and swift) action against Flash game clearinghouse Kongregate when its Android app went live a few days ago, it wasn’t clear what was going to have to happen to get it back in the Market — but they’re giving it a shot today by making a few key tweaks and republishing. Most notably, version 1.1 no longer dumps Flash games that you download to SD storage; instead, the phone’s browser cache is used just as for any other website you visit, which would seem to be a definitive step toward giving the app less of an “app store” feel — precisely the thing that Google’s concerned about. We’ll have to wait and see whether this puppy stays deployed… but for now, you can grab it from the Market.

Verizon’s 4G LTE dongles get Mac support in February

Verizon’s LG VL600 LTE modem received a software update today, but there’s no need to wake your MacBook from its peaceful slumber — there still aren’t any drivers for Apple computers, over a month after we were promised a relatively imminent update. That said, Verizon told PhoneScoop today that the carrier’s LTE dongles will indeed support Apple at some point next month, which is itself only days away. Pantech UML290 owners can bide their time with a workaround, but we LG users will take what we can get, eh?

Razer debuts Ferox portable gaming speakers

Well, it’s not exactly the announcement we were hoping for following Razer’s impressive showing at CES earlier this month, but the company has just gotten official with another product that will soon be available: its new Ferox portable gaming speakers. Described as a “sophisticated, modern day boombox for gamers,” the speakers promise to deliver some “room-filling,” 360 degree omni-directional sound, 12 hours of battery life from the built-in rechargeable batteries and, of course, full compatibility with anything sporting a 3.5mm jack. Hit up the gallery below for a closer look, and look for the speakers to be available by the end of the month for $60.

Obama’s State of the Union address goes Web 2.0

Tonight, President Obama will deliver the annual State of the Union address, and while partisan politics (and some great shots of various people nodding off) will rule the night, the US government is getting into the Web 2.0 game in a big way tonight. The speech — scheduled for 9:00 pm ET — will be streamed live on the web, and immediately following said speech, the White House will host an ‘Open for Questions’ event on Twitter making use of the hashtag #sotu, while other government officials will answer questions submitted on Facebook, as well as the White House website’s webform. On Thursday night, the President will also answer questions on YouTube. We’ll let you know if and when the government hatches a plan to answer questions on Yahoo! Answers.

Securely Erase Files from Your Computer

This article was written on April 16, 2010 by CyberNet.

Have you ever erased something from your computer, but were then concerned with whether the information would still be accessible? One situation I can think of is when giving away or selling a computer/hard drive, and the fear that the new owner may try to recover the information that you left behind on the drive.

Utilities like WipeFile are great in these scenarios. Not only is it free, but it’s also portable which means you don’t have to install it if there are just a few files you want to erase. The best part about WipeFile is that you can list out all the directories on your drive that you want to remove, and you can even go as far as to restrict it to certain files based upon name/extension.

After you’ve selected all of the paths you can move on to picking one of the 14 different methods that can be used to securely eliminate the files. One of those methods was designed by Peter Gutmann, which consists of 35 passes that tries to make it economically infeasible for anyone to recover the data that was on the drive. Obviously the more passes the application has to make the longer it will take, but that’s the price we pay for security.

Intel Hires Will.I.AM for Made Up Job

Will_I_Am_Hologram_CNN.jpeg

Say you’re the world’s largest chip maker, with access to some of the greatest minds in the computer science industry. Who would you be eyeing to become the latest addition to your team? How about that one guy from the Black Eyed Peas. What manner of experience does he have? Well, he appeared as a hologram on CNN during the last presidential election. That was pretty neat, right?

Intel has chosen will.i.am (also known as William James Adams, Jr. to those who frequent his Wikipedia page) for the made up title of “director of creative innovation.” But wait, before you go saying that this is obviously just some title that Intel made up to get some publicity during an otherwise slow news week (how dare you?), the company insists that rapper will be an intricate part of its “compute continuum.”
will.i.am, naturally, is also pretty psyched,
Nearly everything I do involves processors and computers, and when I see an Intel chip I think of all the creative minds involved that help to amplify my own creativity. Teaming up with the scientists, researchers and computer programmers at Intel to collaborate and co-develop new ways to communicate, create, inform and entertain is going to be amazing
In the meantime, will.i.am has a Superbowl Halftime Show to perform at.
