Dragon Age Player Says He Was Banned for

ragon2.jpg

Bioware.com forum user v_ware apparently isn’t a big fan of EA, and he probably didn’t change his mind after his Dragon Age II account was suspended. He said he was banned from the game for 72 hours because on an external website detached from the actual game, he referred to the game’s publisher as “the EA devil.”

When v_ware complained about not being able to play his newly purchased game, Bioware responded with a rather blunt response, saying, “Because the BioWare community now operates under the same umbrella as all EA Communities, community members here have all explicitly agreed to abide by and be governed by both sets of rules. Consider it an added incentive to follow the rules you say you’re going to follow … End of line.”

But then the story started going viral, and wouldn’t you know it? Bioware stepped up and made a complete change of face.

In a statement sent to Kotaku, Bioware community manager Chris Priestly said that in this case, “There was an error in the system that accidentally suspended a user’s entire account. Immediately upon learning of the glitch, EA restored the user’s macro account and apologized for the inconvenience.”

Fasterfox 2.0 Released – Compatible With Firefox 2

This article was written on October 31, 2006 by CyberNet.

FasterFox I know many of you were waiting for Fasterfox to release a Firefox 2 compatible version before upgrading, and now you don’t have to wait any longer. The newest version also comes in 11 new languages  but doesn’t contain any new features.

It has been awhile since I have tried Fasterfox so I figured I’d give it a whirl. I haven’t had it installed very long but I don’t notice any tremendous speed improvements when loading websites.  I’m not going to give up that quickly though and I figured I’ll leave it installed for about a week and then remove it to see if I go through withdrawals by not having it.

There are some new details about T-Mobile’s re-introduction of its once bleeding-edge Sidekick brand. It will go back to its messaging roots and focus on texting and e-mail, but with a whole new set of toys.

It definitely still looks like a Sidekick. The large, five-row keyboard with individually spaced keys ensures the ergonomics will be identical to previous Sidekick devices.

With a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, 800×480 display, and dual cameras, this 4G phone brings Sidekick into the 2010s. It will be out in the second quarter.

Coming Soon: Take Your GED Via Computer

scantronn.jpg

Beginning this spring, people wanting to get their GED will be able to take a computerized version of the test, making it easier and less prone to human error than the seemingly outdated paper-based tests everyone still uses.

The American Council on Education and Pearson has joined forces with the GED Testing Service to create the test, which will begin rolling out in California, Florida, Georgia, and Texas this spring.

The test will not be offered online. It still requires going to an official testing center. However, it is a major step forward in the advancement of the test. 800,000 people take the GED exam every year.

Cobra iRadar detection system coming to Android next month

iPhone users have been able to avoid radar speed guns using Cobra’s iRadar system since late last year, and it looks like Android users will soon finally be able to get in on the act as well. Cobra used the gdgt Live event at SXSW to announce that iRadar will be available for Android phones sometime in April. That consists of a standard dash-mounted radar detector and, of course, an app, which also takes advantage of your phone’s built-in GPS capabilities to provide warnings of photo enforcement zones and other potential impediments to your inability to drive 55 — you’ll apparently soon even be able to share radar alerts with other iRadar users. Head on past the break for a video of the iPhone version.

Available in your choice of black and orange, white and green, or camouflage and blue color combos, the headset isn’t wireless, but it can be folded up for a bit of added portability, and Harman promises that the headphones will deliver “realistic, dynamic sound” while also filtering out most background noise. Sound like just the headset you’ve been looking for? You can grab this one right now for $80. Full press release is after the break.

Netflix rumored to spend $100 million or more outbidding cable networks for one new TV show

While Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has suggested the company would avoid getting into the content business, Deadline Hollywood reports it outbid cable channels like HBO and AMC for a new David Fincher drama starring Kevin Spacey called House of Cards. The post goes on to suggest that the deal is still being negotiated but Netflix will be on the hook for two season which could cost it more than $100 million. Right now Netflix is flush with the cash of its 20 million strong subscriber base, but so far it has focused on enhancing it’s $8 / month streaming package by spending on quantity, not necessarily quality new content even after deals with Relativity Media and Epix. A deal like this changes things completely and puts it directly in competition with the pay-TV biz, but we’ll wait and find out how much of the rumor is true before putting up a deathwatch for HBO, Showtime and the rest.

Gadget Lab Notes: Autonomous Vacuum Cleaner Also Plays Spy

The Samsung Tango View Cleaner has an onboard webcam and mic

Gadget Lab Notes is an eclectic roundup of gadget news briefs and intriguing products that catch our eye.

Samsung Tango View Cleaner-Bot Streams What it Sees
If you’ve always wanted some sort of spy cam in your home, and your floors are perpetually dirty, Samsung has created the hybrid device you’ve been looking for. The Tango View VC-FL87W is an autonomous, Roomba-like vacuum cleaner with a built-in webcam that can stream its view to a smartphone or tablet. An onboard mic and low-light video support make it a sneaky (creepy?) way to keep tabs on what’s going on in your abode when you’re not around to keep an eye on things. Or you can just have fun getting a mouse-eyed view of the world as your floors get cleaned.

Expedition Tripod Is Made of Wood Instead of Metal
The Expedition Tripod is made of sustainably harvested varnished ash in Germany. Why wood? It absorbs vibration better than metals like carbon, steel, or aluminum (or so they manufacturer says). And craftsmen have used the same techniques to build it for over a century.

Google Joining In on the NFC Payment Game
Although Google has explicitly stated that they don’t sell hardware, they have, according to Bloomberg’s sources, been purchasing “thousands” of VeriFone’s NFC payment terminals. The search engine giant is planning to install them in the tech-forward cities of San Francisco and New York City so users can swipe their Android smartphone to pay for transactions. There have been previous rumors that Google was developing their own payment system; this Verifone-purchasing information is right in line with that.

Magic Spoon, A Simple Solution for Transporting Flatware
When I decide to eat some food in my room, it’s always a pain to juggle a glass, plate, and forks or spoons as I walk across the house. The Magic Spoon design fixes at least part of that problem by elongating and bending the handle of your utensil, turning it into a hairpin-type clasp. Just slide and clamp it onto a plate or cup to secure it.
