Lockheed Martin shows off Orion spacecraft, new secret lair

Lockheed Martin shows off Opollo spacecraft, new underground lair

No, that’s not the Apollo command module you’re looking at up there. What’s old is new again in space design, and what’s floating weightless above this text is a photo of humanity’s next great chariot into space. It’s the Orion spacecraft from Lockheed Martin, commissioned for NASA and designed to carry a crew of four not just for trips into orbit but well out into the solar system. Lockheed Martin has just taken the wraps off the thing for the first time, also showing off its new Space Operations Simulation Center (SOSC), located neither in Houston nor Cape Canaveral. It is instead dug into built atop the bedrock in Colorado, theoretically isolating it from seismic and other disturbances so that the testing crew can do their thing without any outside interference. In that bunker the ship is currently testing ahead of a planned first launch in 2013, taking a crew into orbit as soon as 2016. Mars? That might be another few years.

Update: John wrote in to point out that the facility is actually built on some bedrock, not within the bedrock. So, it’s not an underground lair after all — but it’s still a lair by golly.

Download Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.1 And 1.5.0.9 As Well As Thunderbird 1.5.0.9

This article was written on December 19, 2006 by CyberNet.

Today is a very big day for Mozilla! We have Firefox 1.5.0.9 and 2.0.0.1 available for download as well as Thunderbird 1.5.0.9. As I mentioned yesterday there are 183 bugs fixed in Firefox 2.0.0.1: 42 are crashers, 3 are memory leaks, 41 are regressions and 4 are privacy-related bugs. In the comments yesterday Tom asked if this was a lot of bug fixes or if it was typical for a minor update. Since it is the first release after a major update I was expecting there to be a lot of bug fixes so this isn’t surprising to me, but 1.5.0.8 only had 9 bug fixes from the previous 1.5.0.7 so this update for 2.0.0.1 has quite a few changes. Since there are so many changes don’t be surprised if some of your extensions have problems.

James pointed out in the comments this morning that Mozilla plans to make the changes live on the website at 10AM and the built-in updates will be activated around 5PM (both times are Pacific Time). Below you will find the downloads for each of the applications and they use a load balancing URL to access their FTP. Most sites that are already linking to the builds use an address that looks something like “ftp.mozilla.com…” but this one is “releases.mozilla.com…”  which is supposed to spread the load out across the mirrors (or so I’ve been told).

Alright, here are the download links and if you have any problems with extensions please let us know so that others can be a little more cautious while installing the new releases:

–Firefox 1.5.0.9 Download–

–Firefox 2.0.0.1 Download–

–Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 Download–

With all of that being said, work on Firefox 1.5.0.10 and 2.0.0.2 has already begun and they are looking for an end of January or early February release. Congratulations to the whole Mozilla team for another set of fine releases and keep up the good work!

Ford Focus Can Be Controlled Over AT&T

ford-focus-electric-car-bev-photo01.jpeg

Ford and AT&T have announced a partnership that will see the upcoming electric Focus able to connect to AT&T’s network wirelessly. The connection will allow car owners to access data about their car via the MyFord mobile app.

The app will provide a pretty wide range of information, including details on the current state of charge, a map of nearby charging stations, and you can even create a route to guide you to your car if you ever happen to lose it. It can also be set-up to notify you if the battery needs a charge or if, for some reason, the charging happens to stop.

“With a wireless connection, we’re putting battery charge and vehicle range information, along with an interactive, data-driven trip planning app, directly at the fingertips of our customers,” Ford’s Ed Pleetsaid. “This technology will keep drivers connected to vital information, enhancing their electric car ownership experience. The AT&T network is an important part of this equation and we’re pleased to have AT&T on board.”

Kyocera pictures a world of deeply understanding phones

You know what just doesn’t understand true feelings enough? Our phones, that’s what. But it doesn’t always have to be like that if you ask Kyocera. Sure, the company had its dual-screened Echo on display at CTIA, but it also had an interesting exhibit of concept phones, including the ones pictured above, which can change shape based on human emotion. The premise is that since the majority of our communications comes through body language, these handsets would physically morph to express the mental state of your caller. Don’t ask us why Kyocera’s future just doesn’t have better mobile video chatting solutions for that sort of thing, but as you could probably creatively imagine, the black slab on the left would represent a good mood while the one on the far right is clearly all worked up about something. Not zany enough for you? How about some phones that morph in your hand to adapt to how you’re holding the device? Okay, that one actually seems pretty awesome, as does the one that looks like a spider web, but we’ll let you wrap your heads around the rest of the concepts the company had on display by hitting the gallery below.

Snapkeys eyes auto integration for invisible keyboard

Part of the problem with using nav or infotainment systems is they take your eyes off the road. But could it be safer if the keyboard was integrated in the car’s steering wheel?
