Researchers build synthetic synapse circuit, prosthetic brains still decades away

Building a franken-brain has long been a holy grail of sorts for scientists, but now a team of engineering researchers have made what they claim to be a significant breakthrough towards that goal. Alice Parker and Chongwu Zhou of USC used carbon nanotubes to create synthetic synapse circuits that mimic neurons, the basic building blocks of the brain. This could be invaluable to AI research, though the team still hasn’t tackled the problem of scope — our brains are home to 100 billion neurons, each of which has 10,000 synapses. Moreover, these nanotubes are critically lacking in plasticity — they can’t form new connections, produce new neurons, or adapt with age. All told, the scientists say, we’re decades away from having fake brains — or even sections of it — but if the technology advances as they hope it will, people might one day be able to recover from devastating brain injuries and drive cars smart enough to avert deadly accidents.

Surgical Robot is Invincible at ‘Operation’ Board Game

operationrobot.jpg

This video proves robotic surgery is totally safe. Students at Johns Hopkins University decided to see how the $2 million-dollar da Vinci Surgical System would do at the game where steady fingers is of the utmost importance.

And, in case you had any doubt, it can win the game handily. The robot can pick up plastic Adam’s Apples like nobody’s business, without ever touching the metal edges.

Surgery is one of the most prominent areas for emerging robotic technologies, and they have been proven to reduce error and increase the success of surgeries.

Purdue’s Celeritas car scores 2,200MPG from the sun, wins Shell Eco-marathon

With gas prices topping $4.50 per gallon in some parts of the country, a car that costs a fraction of a penny per mile to drive (and looks like it belongs on the road) is sure to get our attention. The 275-pound, 2,200MPG Celeritas appears to be the closest we’ve come to having a solar-powered car that could one day take to the streets, however, which explains why the vehicle scored first prize in the Urban Concept category in this year’s Shell Eco-marathon. While it can only transport a single person (the driver), the car includes headlights, taillights, a trunk and even backup cameras. Notably absent from this version are air conditioning and a license plate — the latter of which would (naturally) be required before the car becomes street legal. The Purdue University design team chose “Celeritas” (Latin for “swiftness”) as the name for this soon-to-be-street-legal roadster, though in a category that’s notorious for slower vehicles, we wouldn’t expect the prototype to fly past us in the fast lane. Perhaps we can get Celeritas and IVy together for some alone time before we’re dropping Hamiltons for a gallon of regular?

US Army Looks to Adopt Android Devices

us-army-logo.jpgThe U.S. Army is always looking for ways to help its troops fight better. First the Army embraced video games as a way to train, now the Army is wanting to adopt Android-based devices. The Army would allow developers to develop a couple of apps just for the Army in order to protect themselves in better ways.

Here is what Lieutenant Colonel Mark Daniels had to say about this:

That’s going to allow us to be interoperable across the entire family of systems of JBC-P, which would include the platforms, the aviation, the logistics community, the tanks, the Bradleys, the handhelds

The Army did not confirm that the Android device will be adopted, nor has any soft release date been released. As for why the Android devices are the only smartphone OS being considered is pretty clear at this point. As of now, the Android OS is the only open source one on the market, thus making it easier for the Army to work on.

Report: Lenovo to Debut Android Tablet This Summer

This could be what Lenovo’s tablet looks like, according to a leaked Powerpoint presentation. Photo courtesy of This is my Next

Yet another major electronics manufacturer may throw its hat into the tablet ring this summer according to a recent report.

Chinese PC manufacturing giant Lenovo has plans to debut its Android 3.0-powered ThinkPad Tablet come June, according to a leaked Powerpoint presentation obtained by tech reporter Joanna Stern.

As the document says, the device will be powered by Honeycomb, the tablet-optimized version of Android. It will run on the Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, a chip which has virtually reached mobile-industry standard status after being featured on myriad phones and tablets debuted in 2011.

Other touted specs remain similar to the already-existing pack: Micro USB, HDMI, SD card and USB 2.0 ports are all included. 16, 32 and 64-GB versions will be offered, as well as the eventual release of 3G and 4G-enabled versions.

The tablet does deviate from its brethren somewhat, but you’ll have to spend a little more to see the differences. Optional choices include a stylus pen for “sketching and note-taking,” as well as a docking bay with keyboard attachment, which essentially turns the tablet into a laptop. Think HTC Flyer meets the Motorola Atrix.

Since Lenovo’s tablet is marketed in the Powerpoint pictures as the tablet “for on-the-go business professionals…and the IT Managers that support them,” we may be seeing a rival to Research in Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, a device also aimed at the enterprise market. Originally a laptop designed and manufactured by IBM, the ThinkPad brand was purchased by Lenovo in 2005.

Shocker! Instant messaging gains popularity as TXTing declines, BBM to blame

Apparently, those young’uns just love their BBM. According to a report by the research group Mobile Youth, young folk (read: those of you between 15 and 24) are increasingly abandoning SMS in favor of instant messaging apps, with texting expected to drop off 20 percent over the next two years. The main culprit? BlackBerry Messenger, which now boasts over 39 million users, many of them living outside the US. In fact, it’s in the UK, Indonesia, South Africa, and Brazil — all popular markets for BBM — that Mobile Youth expects texting to dwindle the most. And if BBM is to blame, well, that drop-off could be just the beginning.

White iPhone 4 coming to Best Buy on Wednesday?

White iPhone in Best Buy inventory

That, friends, is an inventory listing from Best Buy indicating the mythical white iPhone 4 will finally be in stock and for sale this Wednesday, April 27th (just in time to be overshadowed by rumors of the iPhone 5). Of course, we’ve seen it pop up in inventory systems before, including Best Buy’s, only to be let down when the alleged street date came and went without so much as a glossy-white glimmer of hope. But, we’ve heard straight from Apple’s Phil Schiller that it would ship in the spring, and with one already finding its way into the hands of a lucky Londoner a Wednesday release for the paler-than-black iPhone is looking plausible. Still, we’re not quite ready to call this one confirmed.
