Sony PSP Outsells Nintendo 3DS

sony-psp-3000-gaming.jpgNintendo, and Sony have been rivals for years now. But for years, Nintendo has sat on top, leaving Sony scraping the barrel. Now it seems that Sony has finally turned the table on Nintendo. It is reported that the PlayStation Portable is selling more units than the new Nintendo 3DS. The difference is not huge, but big enough for Sony to milk it.

The Nintendo 3DS only sold 32,910, while the PSP brought in a whopping 35,478 units. Keep in mind that these figures are solely based on Japan’s sales alone. No wider study has been done regarding this.

Over this past year and a half Sony has made some huge gains in terms of sales. The PlayStation 2 is still a top seller, despite being over 10 years old, and it has even sold more units recently than the PS3. Neither Sony or Nintendo have released a statement regarding the number of sales.

Beats by Dr. Dre get the ColorWare treatment, minus the color (video)

Now, you’d think ColorWare would be working furiously to release some flashy iPad 2s, but that’s not what we’re getting today — instead we now have a pair of Monster headphones to complement that ever-so-necessary neon Dyson Air Multiplier we assume you’ve already added to every room in your tastefully decorated mansion. These very limited edition ColorWare “Chrome Beats” headphones don’t actually have any color, but they admittedly do look pretty slick, excepting the $1,000 price tag necessitated by this perfect storm of overpriced branding. ColorWare is only decking out 50 of these ‘cans, so grab that platinum card and head over to our source link to get your pair.

Verizon Wireless: we might sell the BlackBerry PlayBook, if we feel like it

Frightened by the mere thought of picking up a partially-baked BlackBerry PlayBook? So is Verizon Wireless, it seems. Despite a March 22nd press release (embedded after the break for convenience) from Research in Motion suggesting that VZW would indeed be a “retail channel” for the QNX-based slate, the carrier’s Brenda Raney is singing a different tune. According to her:

“We’re still evaluating the BlackBerry Playbook and have not made a determination as to whether we’re going to distribute it.”

‘Course, we wouldn’t cry too hard if Big Red ends up passing — Sprint’s 4G version ought to satisfy anyone pining to pick one up with an integrated cell radio. Too bad Mike Lazaridis isn’t around to opine on just how “unfair” such a statement is.

Potentially Landmark Ruling Bans Debt Collector From Facebook

dark-money.jpg

A Florida judge has ruled in favor of plaintiff Melanie Beacham in a harassment lawsuit against debt collector MarkOne Financial. In it, Beacham says she received 23 phone calls per day about a debt she owed, and then at one point MarkOne was able to track her down on Facebook. Representatives then not only sent online messages to her but also to everyone on her friend list.

In a preliminary ruling, the judge declared MarkOne is barred from contacting Beacham or any of her friends on any social networking site.

The legal order is the first of its kind, and a big victory for Beacham’s lawyer Bill Howard. Howard, who focuses on consumer protection cases at firm Morgan & Morgan, said a ruling against using social networking to harass debt owners is “something we’ve been fighting for, and we finally got a court ruling on that.”

Beacham’s case remains ongoing, but some could say she already scored a victory.

Apple Sues Samsung for Copying iPad

ipad.jpgThis year may be remembered as the year of major lawsuits in the tech world. Apple has now sued Samsung for “stealing” the concept and look of the iPad/iPhone. However, no real claim can be made since Apple has no copyright on the system.

This is the third big lawsuit from one tech company to another. Apple has been very protective of the iPad/iPod, even going so far as to block certain apps that could threaten the official Apple apps.

Neither Apple or Samsung have released a statement regarding the lawsuit against Samsung for the Galaxy tablet.

KnightHawk 3G network-in-a-box breaks soldiers’ backs, helps them get online anywhere

While it’s easy enough to envision soldiers scaling battlegrounds with portable hotspots in tow, it’s a useless solution for warriors deployed to remote areas that have patchy service to begin with. Enter the KnightHawk 3G, a rugged network-in-a-box that cooks up connectivity in otherwise uncovered areas. The self-contained WCDMA network runs over the 2100MHz spectrum, promising download speeds as fast as 14.4mbps and max upload rates of 5.76mbps. It has capacity for up to 60 simultaneous voice calls and can handle 14 HSPA connections at a time. And it’ll help keep our troops in top shape — you can’t tell from the photos, but that thing weighs 45 pounds.

Something Big is Planned for 10th Anniversary of the Apple Store

first-apple-store.jpg

On May 19, 2001, Apple launched its very first direct-to-retail storefronts in Virginia and California. Now the company commands an entire brick-and-mortar empire, and apparently plans to celebrate that next month when the Apple Store brand turns 10.

It’s reported that Apple Store employees have been told they are restricted from using vacation days between May 20 and May 22. Word on the street is this has something to do with a large-scale celebration of the milestone anniversary, though it’s odd that May 19 isn’t included.

Even employees are still in the dark, as the mass e-mail they received said nothing about why the dates were so important.
