CyberKidz: Online Educational Games for Kids

This article was written on June 25, 2010 by CyberNet.

Good educational games for kids can be hard to come by, and finding ones that are targeted towards a specific age group are even more rare. The website CyberKidzGames.com, however, does just that. All of their online games are broken down by ages ranging from 4 to 11, and from there they are all categorized.

The math category has 32 games, geography has 26 games, literacy has 32 games, and art/music has 4 games. Your kids can learn everything from multiplication tables to state capitals, and there are even typing tests.

The games aren’t uber great, but keep in mind that they are aimed at young kids. The interfaces for the ones that I tried felt suitable for the ages they were targeting, and I could see how they would be relatively entertaining. I mean really though, how much fun can learning be? :)

iriver P8 player pops up on Russian site, packs prodigious battery life

iriver p8

It’s been a while since iriver last updated its P series of large-screen portable media players, — so long in fact, that we thought the series had simply been retired. Imagine our surprise, when this five-incher popped up on the company’s Russian site, sporting a long list of supported file formats, and an even longer battery life (up to nine hours of video and 40 hours of audio). The P8 comes in 8GB and 16GB flavors, but also packs a microSD slot for tacking on additional storage. You’re not limited to watching clips on the 800 x 480 touchscreen either, the player boasts an HDMI port for pushing HD content straight to a TV. Of course, whether or not this half-inch thick, half-pound device ever makes it to American shores or how much it will cost when it does remains to be seen. Check out the gallery of press shots below.

AT&T to offer standard insurance for iPhone owners starting July 17th

If you have an AT&T iPhone in your possession, there’s a good chance you’ve quickly glanced at available insurance options and noticed they’re… well, a tad on the spendy side. Big Blue’s only solution requires a $12 monthly asking price — considering that’s before the deductible gets factored in, we just can’t imagine it selling like hotcakes. The tides appear to be turning, however; according to AT&T’s official site, iPhones will be eligible for Asurion Mobile Insurance plans on July 17th. With these new plans, the monthly cost will plummet to a much more reasonable $5, placing it lower than Verizon’s version. We’re still awaiting word on the deductible, though other smartphones on the same protection plan require a $125 replacement charge. Here’s the drawback: it’s only available for the first 30 days after the device is purchased, which means anyone who procured an iPhone before mid-June will want to keep those cases and screen protectors glued on tight. There’s also no intimate details on what kind of damage is covered — good thing these things are so difficult to destroy, eh?

Leaked AMD roadmap reveals next-gen Fusion tablet chips

AMD Tablet Roadmap

Until recently, AMD has kept pretty mum on its tablet plans, with it only officially entering the fray last month. It’s clear that the first batch of Z-Series chips, codenamed Desna, are are not terribly different from the rest Fusion line but, according to a leaked roadmap, that will all change with its successor — Hondo. Supposedly the next gen of tablet APUs will ditch a number features that aren’t essential to burgeoning form factor, including VGA output, PCIe support, and couple of USB pathways. It will also add an “active standby” mode for maintaining connectivity while reducing power draw and cut TDP by about a third. Hondo is expect to enter production in Q2 of next year, and be succeeded by Samara which will feature a new graphics core. Check out the source link for a few more slides.

Apple to allow license-free virtualization with OS X Lion, developers roar with delight

Developers and IT managers have reason to smile today, because it looks like Apple is changing its approach to virtualization. According to Mac Rumors, users who download the client version of OS X Lion will be able to run one or two virtualized copies on a single Mac, using tools like VMware or Parallels. This functionality first surfaced with Leopard, but was only available to users who obtained a pricey OS X Server license. The EULA for 10.7, however, suggests that Lion owners won’t need any extra licenses to tinker away in an alternate OS universe. It’s news that the enterprise community will certainly welcome, but we’ll have to wait a little longer before riding the Lion into a virtual realm, later this month.

Google Circles knockoff hits Facebook courtesy of unofficial plug-in

Have a bad case of Google+ envy? Here’s a little something that should help hold you over until the site fully opens its flood gates. Circle Hack is a self-described “one-night experiment with Javascript” created by a few Facebook engineers in a non-affiliated capacity, which unofficially brings Google Circles-like functionality to the top social network. The creators of the Facebook plug-in have borrowed liberally from Google on this one (turnabout is fair play, perhaps). Once you log in with your Facebook account, you can drag and drop rectangles of your friends from that site into circles at the bottom of your page — a quick method for curating your Facebook lists. Given the short development of the plug-in, the functionality of the site is, not surprisingly, a bit limited. Certain things like, say, deleting circles, are absent at present — perhaps its creators are too busy working on the Facebook Hangouts hack.

Windows Phone 7 Foursquare app re-released, tweet counts rise rapidly

Bummed about the myriad issues surrounding the original Foursquare app for Windows Phone 7? The troublesome program was pulled due to lacking features and a rather sub-par user experience, leaving mayors everywhere unable to verify their credentials for hard-earned discounts. Well fret no more, friends. A new version of the mobile check-in application has been released, showing off a retooled interface that takes full advantage of Microsoft’s panoramic UI. Among other features are live tile, tap-and-hold check-in, and a map that shows friends’ check-ins alongside nearby specials. Version 2.0, as it’s being called, is now available in the Windows Phone Marketplace — your Twitter followers have probably missed all of your Taco Bell Fourthmeal check-ins anyway.

WrapUp: Mozilla Making Toolbars More Customizable, Identify Unknown Devices in Device Manager, and More

This article was written on May 03, 2010 by CyberNet.

Welcome to the WrapUp by CyberNet. This is a collection of news stories, downloads, and tips that we have collected over the last few days, but never got around to writing about. Don’t forget to send in your own tips, or just leave a comment on this page if you think you’ve got something we should include.

–News–

firefox toolbar.jpgMozilla to Make Firefox Toolbars More Customizable
Toolbars in Firefox have always been customizable to some extent, but the next major Firefox release might be kicking the tweakability factor up a notch. The latest nightly build lets users move even more objects around, and makes it possible for things like the address bar and tabs to coexist on the same toolbar. I can hear minimalists around the world rejoicing.

palm ceo.jpgHP Acquires Palm for $1.2 Billion
The tech world was a bit shaken up last week when HP bought Palm for the sum of $1.2 billion. This news was pretty shocking to me because I hadn’t heard that they were even in talks, but I think the two may be a good fit. HP might be able to come up with some good hardware to put webOS on… including tablet forms. They say that the mobile OS will scale across devices, which leaves some hope that HP will extend their product line with devices powered by Palm’s operating system.

gbridge.jpgFree Remote Access Tools for Windows & Mac
InfoWorld gives a rundown on seven different tools you can use to remotely access your Windows or Mac machine. One of them, LogMeIn, has been a personal long-time favorite of mine. It’s always been reliable, the free version is more than sufficient for what I need to do, and the setup process is a breeze. Check out the other alternatives to see if one is a better fit for your needs.

itunes wishlist.jpgSee if You’ve Bought an App in iTunes Already
One of the most annoying things in iTunes is that I can never tell whether I’ve already purchased an app before. I don’t understand why they don’t put some sort of indicator around the “buy” button. Anyhow, a nifty little trick around this is to try and add the item to your wish list (by hitting the arrow next to the “buy” button). iTunes won’t let you add something to your wish list that you’ve already purchased.
