Google offers free calls home from Gmail for American military

Gmail calls

Google knows how valuable our service men and women are, and how hard it is to be away from home on long tours of duty. The company is giving back where it can, by offering free calls within Gmail to the states for people with a valid .mil email address. It might not seem like much, but you’d understand after getting your first cell phone bill with roaming charges from the eastern mountains of Afghanistan. To take advantage all you have to do is add your military address to your Google account and click a link in the verification email and you’re good to go.

Did Apple Lose An iPhone 5 Prototype In A Bar?

CNET is reporting that Apple has lost another iPhone in another bar. This time, it appears to be an iPhone 5 that’s gone missing. (We say appears because CNET neither confirms this, nor provides any photos of the phone.) More »

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S hands-on (video)

The only way you missed Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Arc S at today’s IFA press conference, is if the slim handset happened to be turned sideways at the time. The 4.2-inch phone was the one of the bigger announcements at the event, sporting a 1.4GHz processor, an 8.1 megapixel camera, a Reality Display and the ability to convert 2D images into 3D. Like the new Walkman, however, Sony seemed largely interested in showing off the handset’s ability to transfer content onto its line of Bravia displays. Check out a brief hands-on video with the new Arc after the break.

Toshiba Thrive to land in UK September 1st, now known as the AT100

If you’re a loyal citizen of the UK anxiously awaiting a Toshiba Thrive, your sleepless nights are nearly over. The less-than-slender tablet, rebranded as the AT100, will hit the United Kingdom on September 1st. Like its American cousin, it will ship with Android 3.1 and a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor — not to mention all those ports: full-size HDMI and USB, along with an SD slot. Of course, with those rumors of a thinner Toshiba tablet swirling around, you may want to hold off on buying. There’s no official word on pricing yet, though you won’t have to wait long to find out.

HP promotes ‘$40 billion’ PC business spin-off with new series of ads

Before today, HP had only expressed that it “will consider a broad range of options” for the future of its Personal Systems Group; and now, said company’s released a series of ads to confirm its intention to spin it off into a separate company. Amidst the lovely (and ironic) mention of HP’s long-lived success with its $40 billion PC business, the underlying message here is all about “staying focused on our customer needs” and to “better anticipate change” — much like being a start-up all over again, as suggested by Executive Vice President Todd Bradley on HP’s website. Of course, the customer in question here is likely from the enterprise sector, as we’ve all learned from CEO Leo Apotheker’s interview at D9, the death of HP’s webOS devices, and the pending acquisition of Autonomy. Still, we’ve yet to hear more concrete plans or even figure out who the potential buyers might be (if any), but for now, you can take a gander at HP’s “sample ad” after the break.

A Programmable LED T-Shirt Is Your Novelty Deal of the Day

Oh hey, fun party, right? Yeah, me too. Jane? No I’m not friends with Jane. Which one is she, the lazy eye? No, like, not in a mean way. Pass the dip? Who’s Dan? Oh, right, no, I don’t know anyone here, I just heard the Simply Red when I was walking by and thought hey, these people know. how. to. par. tay. Pass the chips? It’s also just cool that like this many weirdly proportioned people can all hang out together and everybody’s cool about it. Pass that other dip? Anyway, name’s Kyle. I’ll spare you the embarrassment of asking for my number; it’s been flashing in blinding LED across my t-shirt this whole time. -BB

Sony Walkman Mobile Entertainment Player hands-on (video)

You may well have missed it in today’s deluge of Sony product announcements, but the company showed off the latest device to carry its age-old Walkman brand. The 4.3-inch handset device runs Android Gingerbread, and is still in its early stages at the moment, carrying the fairly uninspired Walkman Mobile Entertainment Player moniker. The device has an HDMI port that can be used to play things like mobile games on an HDTV. Sony seemed far less interested in that functionality than its Throw feature, however, which offers up wireless transfers to devices like the company’s Bravia TV line. We gave it a whirl, and the whole thing was rather painless, even in a setting like Sony’s booth, where the place is lousy with Bravia sets. The device, it seems, isn’t quite ready for primetime, so we don’t have any word on pricing or available yet. Check out a video of the Walkman in action, after the break.
