Magma ExpressBox 3T gives you 3 external PCIe slots over Thunderbolt

ExpressBox 3T

Laptops aren’t exactly renowned for their expandability, especially those beautiful slivers of aluminum from Apple. (Simply upgrading the RAM on your Air requires you break out the soldering iron.) Magma has a solution, the ExpressBox 3T. This silver case houses its own 220w power supply and a trio of PCIe 2.0 slots. Two of those slots are of the x8 variety (though one can hold an x16 card) while the third is scaled back to x4. And they all talk to your notebook via that wonderful little port known as Thunderbolt. It even comes with a carrying case which, we suppose, makes this hunk of metal “portable,” but we certainly wouldn’t want to lug it around very often. Sadly there’s no info just yet about price or release date, but we do have a gallery of images below and the complete PR after the break.

The World’s Largest Firefox Logo: Over 400MP

This article was written on December 28, 2006 by CyberNet.

Firefox logo

I’m not sure if this is really the world’s largest Firefox logo but I would have to say that it is pretty close! It weighs in at 9.66MB and stretches 20502 x 19839 pixels. I mirrored the image on FileHo because I didn’t want to link to the private server that Jake sent me in the tip. I furiously tried to upload it to a photo service but Flickr only allows 5MB images for free accounts and AllYouCanUpload errored out each time despite it being a restriction-free photo service.

Once I had the image on my PC (as pictured above) I tried opening it with the Windows Picture Viewer but that crashed Vista. Then I decided to try Firefox and it slowly opened it. It took about 4-minutes for it to completely render and scale the image to the browser window, but the funny thing is that it didn’t scale it proportionally:

Eventually after it finished loading I was able to expand the image to its normal size. The scrollbars were still extremely small on my 24″ monitor (with a resolution of 1920 x 1200). I scrolled to a portion of the image that we would all be able to recognize…the nose. Here is what the nose looked like after I scaled it to fit this blog (the dimensions of the original screenshot before scaling was 1642 x 1084):

The nose was originally three times that size! For comparison sake here is a smaller version of the logo:

I was pretty amused by this. You can always play with the image yourself by downloading it here.

Thanks again for the tip Jake!

Huawei Impulse 4G Targets Feature-Phone Crowd

If the cost of a handset has left you tentative about dipping your toes into the smartphone pool, here’s your chance to dive in without draining your bank account.

Today, AT&T officially announced the dirt-cheap Huawei Impulse 4G, an Android 2.2-running smartphone aimed at those of you clinging to your feature phones. It’s got a $30 price tag with a two-year service agreement, which is as low as $15 a month for 200 megabytes of data. You’ll probably spend more than that on coffee this week, making the Impulse 4G a great entry-level rig for someone who wants a smartphone and doesn’t anticipate quickly becoming a data hog.

Features-wise, the Impulse 4G has a 3.8-inch WVGA (800 x 480 resolution) touch display, a 5-megapixel camera with the ability to record 720p video and an 800 MHz Qualcomm processor. Again, nothing wow-tastic, but more than adequate for someone switching to their first smartphone.

The Impulse comes as smartphone manufacturers and carriers have tried to entice the significant part of the population — 60% of cellphone owners — who still use feature phones. Sprint unveiled the $100 Samsung Conquer 4G in August, for example, and even Apple is said to be getting into the game amid rumors of a cheaper, 8 gig iPhone 4S expected next month. Apple CEO Tim Cook has helped fuel those rumors by saying, “price is a big factor in the prepaid market,” and Apple is “not ceding any market.”

Neither is AT&T, apparently. According to Nielsen, 55 percent of people who bought a cellphone in the last 3 months chose a smartphone, which means a lot of people are upgrading from feature phones. AT&T is making that transition seamless and attractive budget-wise, and offering options for those who want a smartphone, but don’t necessarily need all the bells and whistles of something like an iPhone or flagship Nexus.

“Folks with feature phones tell us the main reason they chose their current phone is price. So as smartphone prices continue to go down, we can expect more of them to upgrade,” says Don Kellogg, director of telecom and insights at Nielsen.

Huawei’s Impulse 4G also includes the standard Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS, and will chug along on AT&T’s 4G HSPA+ network.

The Impulse 4G will be available on AT&T September 18th.

Eric Schmidt: Ice Cream Sandwich coming in October or November

Got your sights set on the next version of Android, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich? We knew it was coming near the end of the year, but we now at least have a slightly more specific time frame straight from the horse’s mouth. Google’s own Eric Schmidt revealed in an interview with Salesforce.com’s Marc Benioff that ICS — the highly-anticipated update to Android that will merge elements of Honeycomb and Gingerbread into one universal OS — can be expected to arrive in October or November. This matches up with rumors saying the Nexus Prime will be released in the tenth month, but it’s the first time we’ve heard anything official from El Goog since I/O four months ago. Check out the video below to get Schmidt’s full statement.

Atari Arcade is the $60 answer to iCade (review)

Yearning to relive the classics (Lunar Lander, anyone?) on your iPad, replete with that authentic arcade feel? It wasn’t long ago that we reviewed ThinkGeek and Ion’s formidable iCade, but at $100, it was — and still is — a pricey portion to stomach for an occasional retro gaming fix. Fast forward to the present, and Atari’s paired with Discovery Bay Games to create their own official spin on an iPad arcade adapter, fittingly dubbed the Arcade Duo-Powered Joystick. Unlike the iCade, it doesn’t use Bluetooth and requires no batteries — you simply dock your iPad into its 30-pin connector. The joypad is specifically made to work with Atari’s Greatest Hits app, and it’s set to land in early October for a slightly more wallet-friendly price of $60. We were able to slam its controls a bit while playing through various levels of Major Havoc and the like, and you’ll find our impressions after the break.
