FCC to test white space database at its own pace

See that faint silhouette lurking on the horizon? That’d be a wave of white space internet, and it’s inching ever closer to the US. On Wednesday, the FCC confirmed that it will begin testing a new database that will enable gadgets to operate on white space airwaves, nearly a year after first ratifying its “super WiFi” initiative. The Spectrum Bridge database, as outlined last year, will map out all channels that aren’t being used by radio or TV services, thereby preventing broadband devices from interfering with broadcasts. The system will be tested over a 45-day period beginning on September 19th and ending on November 2nd, in order to make sure that it correctly distinguishes available channels from those currently in use. Cable operators and wireless mic users are invited to register with the database to test its accuracy, but this trial period could easily be extended if the Commission determines that further tests are in order. And, though there’s still no indication that unlicensed broadband devices will be hitting the market anytime soon, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski seems confident that this white space spectrum could drastically change the industry. “Unleashing white spaces spectrum will enable a new wave of wireless innovation,” Genachowski explained. “It has the potential to exceed the billions of dollars in economic benefit from WiFi, the last significant release of unlicensed spectrum, and drive private investment and job creation.” You can read the FCC’s full public notice, after the break.

Brain scanner app lets you show off your smarts on-the-go

Forget learning how to open a champagne bottle with a saber, because this smartphone brain scanner probably has it beat for coolest party trick ever. After you pull out that 14-channel EEG headset you have lying around, all you need to do is attach the probes to your date’s dome piece to measure his or her neural activity on your Nokia N900. The app then goes to work, taking binary data and reconstructing it on screen in 3D. The result? A new way to elimi-date Match.com candidates based on the real-time image of his or her melon. We can’t promise it’ll get you a second date, but we can give you a glimpse of the app in action after the break.

[Thanks, arek]

Mercedes-Benz F 125! looks like the future, runs on hydrogen

As expected, the feature concept car being shown by Mercedes-Benz at Frankfurt this year was the F 125! But Merc isn’t actually calling it a concept, rather a “research vehicle” that will help the company work toward a gasoline-free future. In this case it’s a hydrogen-filled future, with this car running on compressed gas and so giving off only water vapor and oxygen as emissions. But, it’s also a plug-in, meaning you can charge this thing up on your garage in addition to topping off the tank at your local H2 filling station — at some point in the future when you actually have an H2 filling station. Read on for more details.

Report: Foxconn’s Brazil factory ready for business, will begin shipping iPads in December

It appears that Apple is about to expand its manufacturing operations to Brazil, where a new Foxconn factory is already in place and ready to churn out iPads, according to a report from national media outlet UOL. Aolizio Mercadante, the country’s minister of science and technology, confirmed the news this week during a hearing held by the Commission of Economic Affairs. “At first many doubted, but it will be the first time that [Apple] will produce iPads outside Chinese territory,” Mercadente said. “We are taking a big step for digital inclusion in the country.” Located in Jundiaí, the new facility was constructed under a joint venture between Foxconn and the Brazilian government, with the former reportedly contributing $12 million to the initiative. Rumors of a South American expansion began circulating earlier this year, with many expecting Foxconn’s Brazil-based operations to get underway during Q1 of 2012, according to DigiTimes. Construction, however, appears to have wrapped up ahead of schedule, with Mercadante claiming that iPad shipments will begin in December. Apple, for its part, has not commented on the report.

Android users across Europe are waking up to some bonnes nouvelles this morning, because Google has now expanded its Voice Actions service to France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. Beginning today, loquacious smartphone and tablet users will be able to place calls, send texts and conduct Google searches by speaking into their devices. All you have to do is press the microphone button on your home screen’s Google search field and open the Voice Search app, or simply press the physical search button on your handset to bring up the “Speak Now” field. From there, you can begin chattering away in French, German, Italian, Spanish and real British English. Interested parties running Android 2.2 or above can get started by downloading the Voice Search app from the source link below, or by checking out Google’s demo video, after the break.

Sony unveils $300 RDP-X500iP speaker dock, gives your iPad some sonic assistance

Sony’s churned out plenty of speaker docks for the smaller iDevices out there, but until now, it hadn’t given the largest Apple handheld any love. It’s a little late to the party, but the company finally jumped on the iPad bandwagon with its latest RDP-X500iP speaker dock. Sporting a built in subwoofer, magnetic fluid speakers and Sony’s Clear Phase DSP sonic technology, this little gem purportedly packs a pretty good bass punch while delivering quality audio. Picking one up will leave your wallet $300 lighter when it’s released next month, and you can reserve yours now by getting in on the pre-order over on Sony’s website.

WrapUp: Windows 7 RTM, Hotmail Storage, and More

This article was written on July 28, 2009 by CyberNet.

Welcome to the WrapUp by CyberNet. This is a collection of news stories, downloads, and tips that we have collected over the last few days, but never got around to writing about. Don’t forget to send in your own tips, or just leave a comment on this page if you think you’ve got something we should include.

–News–

windows 7 rtm.jpgWindows 7 Released to Manufacturing
Piraters were one step ahead of Microsoft last week when they announced that Windows 7 was released to manufacturing (RTM). The build that went gold was leaked to Torrent sites a few days before the announcement, which isn’t the least bit surprising. General availability is still October 22nd, but MSDN subscribers will be receiving it in early August.

google wave.jpgSign Up for Google Wave Testing
In September Google has said that they will be rolling out Google Wave to 100,000 lucky people. If you’re interested in testing you should jump on the list to make sure you’re selected once September rolls around.

hotmail storage-1.jpgHow Much Storage Does Hotmail Offer?
When it comes to Hotmail Microsoft doesn’t actually come out and say exactly how much storage you have. They do, however, say that it will increase each month as needed provided that you’re not abusing their system. When you look at some settings in Office 2010 (and other email tools) it is reporting up to 500GB of storage for some users. Huh, makes Gmail look like nothing.

zappos.jpgAmazon Acquires Zappos
The web giant Amazon will be bringing another company into their nest. This time it is the online shoe shopping site Zappos, and the deal was just shy of $1 billion. The only concern I’ve really heard from people is whether or not Amazon will maintain the excellent customer service level that Zappos has been known to provide.

palm pre.jpgPalm WebOS 1.1 Re-enabled iTunes Syncing
There is definitely a conflict going on between Apple and Palm right now. The Palm Pre launched with the ability to sync with iTunes by disguising itself as an iPod, but Apple was quick to release an update to iTunes that disabled the functionality. The new WebOS 1.1 for the Palm Pre once again syncs with iTunes, and it was made available just one week after the release of the new iTunes. Your move, Apple.

gmail unsubscribe.jpgGmail Helps You Unsubscribe from Mailing Lists
Sometimes it can be a pain to unsubscribe from a mailing list, but it looks like Google is looking for a way to tackle that issue. In Gmail there will be an unsubscribe link for certain mailing lists, which will submit the request to be removed without you having to venture outside of your Inbox.

thunderbird beta.jpgThunderbird 3.0 Beta 3 Adds Tabs
Been looking to get some tab action in your email client? Look no further than the latest Beta of Thunderbird 3.0. It’s loaded with goodies such as tabbed windows for a more confined workspace. It’s not quite enough to pull me away from using the Gmail website though.

ipod touch.jpgNew iPod touch will have Camera & Microphone?
Apple is expected to unveil the next generation iPod touch in the coming months, and the current rumors say that they will have both a camera and microphone built-in. Makes sense… iPod touch owners would then be able to buy apps that are built to use those features.

–Tips, Tutorials, and Reviews–

vlc.jpgRip DVD’s Using VLC
I’m sure many of you have chosen VLC as your media player, or at least have it on your machine. After all, it is a great piece of software for playing those obscure media types. As it turns out that handy little app is also capable of ripping DVD’s for, um, “backup” purposes. It’s not the most elegant solution, but still pretty cool.

superf4.jpgTerminate Running Apps with Keyboard Shortcut
Are you one of those people that don’t like to wait for a program to gracefully shutdown? If you are then this app will create a keyboard shortcut you can use to forcefully quit any program. It’s essentially the same result you get by opening up the Task Manager and ending a task there, but faster.

extension.jpgOne Extension to Configure Them All
I don’t know why someone hasn’t thought of this sooner, or why Mozilla doesn’t include this with Firefox. This extension will essentially create a button that you can place on your toolbar, and whenever you click on it you’ll see a list of all the extensions you have installed. Clicking on one of them will bring up the preferences for that particular extension. Anyone who plays with settings a lot knows how many clicks this can save.

firefox theme.jpgFirefox 3.7 Theme
Mozilla posted some mockups last week showing off how Firefox 3.7 might look, and a lot of people took a liking to the design. As expected someone has developed a theme that pretty much replicates what we saw.

checkboxmate.jpgClick & Drag to Select Checkboxes
Here’s another Firefox extension for you to check out. It lets you simply draw a box around a bunch of checkboxes using your mouse, and when you let go it will automagically toggle them. Simple, yet useful.

Valeo Park4U turns your phone into a valet parking service (video)

Assisted parking’s all the rage these days — because the car parks itself, it seems trivial to remain in the car at all. That, friends, is the crux of why Valeo has produced Park4U: an iOS / Android app that remotely parks your car. Enter the app and begin the reversing process, and boom — much like Houdini’s best — it takes care of the rest. The system’s currently available on a limited number of Volkswagen-group models including the Touran, Sharan, Audi A6, Audi A7 and the Seat Alhambra, and the company is planning to have 38 models equipped with the tech by year’s end. Practical considerations aside — and there are several — at least you won’t need a friend to stand behind your car and holler before you hit the rear wall. Not buying it? Perhaps the video after the break will drive it home.

[Thanks, Texas]

BlackBerry Curve Touch 9380 ‘Orlando’ poses for the masses, invites you to look… but not touch

There’s a new BlackBerry coming to town, and as you’re likely aware, it’s the first touchscreen-based Curve from Research in Motion. The folks BGR happened to score a few still shots of the pint-sized companion, where it’s situated next to its larger Torch sibling for comparison. The specs remain the same since we last checked in with the device, though as a quick point of clarification, its HD video capture is limited to 720p — as if you really expected full 1080p. We can’t include all the snapshots here, but it’s rather obvious this isn’t your father’s BlackBerry. If you’ve got a burning desire for these curves, you’ll find a full gallery in the source link below.
