Netvibes Introduces Several New Features

This article was written on November 22, 2006 by CyberNet.

Yesterday Netvibes announced several new features and it seemed like every few hours they were blogging about something new. That’s why I didn’t write about them yesterday because I wasn’t sure if they were going to stop or not. Here are the new features that they have added:

–Hotmail/AOL Mail Integration (Blog Post)–

Just like the Gmail module there are now modules for Hotmail and AOL Mail. Nothing I would use but I’m sure it will make a lot of users happy.

Netvibes Hotmail/AOL

–Video/Podcast Search (Blog Post)–

Their Video Search module has been extended to include MySpace videos and they also decided to make a Podcast module. That Podcast Search will find episodes from iTunes, Odeo, Pluggd, and Podemus.

–New Searching / Filtering Feature (Blog Post)–

The new search feature is great because it will enter the search term into all of the search boxes that you have on your Netvibes page. That means you can simultaneously search the Web, Podcasts, Blogs, Videos, and Images with a single click.

That is pretty useful but the filter feature is probably my new favorite thing that Netvibes introduced. It lets you quickly search for content from your Gmail modules, feeds, To Do lists, and much more. Just type the search in and it will filter/highlight the content on the page accordingly:

That’s all of the new features for now but I’m sure they will continue to release new things like they always do. I really love the Halloween theme that they released awhile back and I still actually use that for my Netvibes page. I just wish they would release a similar color scheme that was not just for Halloween.

Keep up the great work Netvibes!

Ask Engadget: what’s the best dual-SIM phone on the market?

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is coming to us from Damian, who just ain’t satisfied with only one SIM in his handset. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“I’ve looked and given up, so I’m chiming to the oracle. What is the best dual-SIM phone?”

We’re going to need some serious input from our international readers on this one. Dual-SIM handsets just aren’t “a thing” in America, and even finding one is a bit of a chore. But for those elsewhere, what’s your preferred device for toting around SIMs from two nations?

New Addition to Picasa: Flash Slideshows

This article was written on May 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

First things first: If you haven’t upgraded to Picasa 2.7, now would probably be a good time to do that.  It’s been available for a couple of weeks, and there are major improvements, in particular speed improvements.

Once you have that done, go checkout Picasa’s new flash slideshow feature. A handful of startups have offered a slide-show presentation that could be embedded into sites and blogs, but Picasa has never offered it as a built-in feature.

The slideshow is created from your Picasa Web Albums, and you can easily embed the slideshow presentation into your blog or any other website. They even offer you a few customization options like size.  You can select whether you want the presentation to be small (144 pixels) or extra extra large (800 pixels), and a few options in-between.

Another choice that they give you is whether or not you’d like to have the caption for each of the photos displayed. The slide-show feature only takes a few clicks, and it’s easy to use. Now if they could just add an option to loop the slideshow so it doesn’t just end, I think people will be absolutely satisfied with it.

Below is the example from the Google Blog:

Siri gets lost internationally, promises to do better next year

The iPhone 4S’ Siri integration may be a potential game changer, but she’s not quite the world traveler some of us would like her to be. In fact, it seems she’s as lost outside of US borders as any unprepared tourist. Looking for a pub in London? Better find a traditional map. Need to know the time of day in Canada? Siri admits she has no idea, go buy a watch. Business search (via Yelp), directions, and traffic data search all appear to be US-only features for now, and Wolfram Alpha only works in English-speaking countries. The automated assistant’s international failings aren’t too big of a surprise, however — Apple’s own Siri page outs the service as a beta, noting that some features may vary by area. Stuck with sub-par international support? Sit tight, it’s coming: Apple’s Siri FAQ states that additional language support (including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian and Spanish), maps and local search content are set to go international in 2012.

Update: Wolfram Alpha works outside the US in English speaking countries, thanks to everyone in the comments for the clarification.

Apple’s WebKit Scores 100/100 on Acid3, too

This article was written on March 27, 2008 by CyberNet.

webkit acid3

I definitely wasn’t expecting to see this today, but it looks as though the WebKit team has pushed hard to get a public nightly build of the Safari browser out that gets a perfect score on the Acid3 test. This is hot on the heals of Opera’s announcement yesterday that they currently have an internal build of their own browser that is successfully passing the test.

I downloaded and got the latest Windows nightly build running so that I could try it out for myself, and as you can see in the screenshot above it scores a perfect 100/100 on the test. One thing that I’m still trying to figure out is why the Lego-like block with the question mark appears next to the upper-left corner of the neon green box. It could have something to do with this problem that the WebKit team talked about:

We have a slight glitch in the text rendering that is likely to be fixed soon (patch in progress). Also, the animation is required to be smooth. On typical machines, if you look really closely, you can see a small glitch in the animation on test 26 because 26 is designed to be a performance test. However, we think we are faster than all other browsers on test 26. What constitutes a smooth animation is somewhat subjective.

So Apple is the first one to have a public build of their browser that achieves a perfect score on the Acid 3 test. Now the question is what will be the first released browser that fully supports it? Maybe hell will freeze over and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer will take the cake?

Create YouTube Playlists in the Firefox Sidebar

This article was written on October 03, 2007 by CyberNet.

YouPlayer for Firefox I’m sure many of you are YouTube addicts, and you probably can’t get enough of people jumping off roofs or watching those sonic booms. Now there is a Firefox extension to help match your crazy addiction!

YouPlayer appears as a sidebar item in your Firefox browser once it is installed. With it you can drag and drop YouTube video URL’s into the player to have it create a playlist.

One of the reasons I found this extremely useful was that I could drag and drop YouTube search results right into the player, and then watch them all without leaving the page that I was currently on. The only downside about doing it that way was that it didn’t retrieve the title of the video, and would have to be manually renamed if you wanted an easy-to-understand playlist. If you go to each videos standalone page, and then drag the tab over the naming convention is similar to what you see in the screenshot I took to the right.

There are a few things that came to my mind which would make this extension a must-have:

  • It would be awesome if I could add videos from multiple video sites. Sadly it only supports YouTube right now.
  • A bulk video adder seems like a necessity. Think about being able to drag a YouTube search results tab over into the playlist, and then having it automatically add all the videos from that page.
  • What about searching YouTube from within the sidebar? Then you could setup “smart” playlists like iTunes has.
  • A one-click option to have a playlist generated for the day’s most viewed videos would be nice.

Netscape’s “Digg-Clone” Calling it Quits

This article was written on September 07, 2007 by CyberNet.

Some of you probably remember the controversy that came last Summer when Netscape launched a social news service which they hoped would compete with Digg.  They even went as far as "bribing" some of the top Digg and Reddit users at the time with $1,000 per month to come over to Netscape and submit at least 150 news stories each month to help build a community.  It’s been just over a year now since the service launched, and Netscape is calling it quits.

TechCrunch had reported that there was a good chance that AOL (owners of Netscape) was going to get rid of the Digg clone back in the beginning of August, however Netscape didn’t confirm it nor admit it until yesterday when they posted on their blog about some upcoming changes to the site. Among the changes, they noted that they’ve found that the Netscape brand is associated with editorially controlled news instead of socially controlled news. Therefore, they want to provide their users with what they expect from Netscape and they’d soon start redirecting users to the "New Netscape portal experience."

yahoo netscape comparison

So now users will go from a "Digg-clone" to a "Yahoo-clone." That’s right, the page that users will soon be forwarded to is strikingly similar to Yahoo’s homepage. Apparently coming up with an innovative layout and style for a homepage just isn’t top priority for Netscape? I’m almost surprised that they’re still trying to keep Netscape alive. At this point, I’d think that they’d ditch Netscape and start redirecting people to AOL, especially because most of their content comes from AOL anyway.

The graph below also gives us some indication of what the road for Netscape has been like over the last few years:

alexa graph

At this point I’m even doubtful that their editorially controlled news on their "new portal" will even be enough.  What are your thoughts? Does Netscape have a chance of making it much longer?

Google Voice pulled from App Store following iOS 5 crash

What once was there now is gone. Earlier today, Google Voice was just two clicks away in the iOS App Store. Now, all that remains is a page cache (at the source link below) and versions of the app that were already installed on iPhones and iPod touches. Vincent Paquet, Senior Product Manager for Google Voice confirmed that the app had been pulled, explaining “our last update of this week had a bug that caused the app to crash at sign in. We removed it so it did not affect additional users until the fix gets published.” We’ve been using the most recent version — 1.3.0.1771 — on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5 without issue, but recent reviews cite the reported crashing, so it’s definitely affecting at least some users. We don’t have an ETA for when you can expect the app to return, so if you don’t already have it installed, you’ll need to hang tight for the time being. The service should function normally otherwise, assuming your phone number has already been registered, though you won’t be able to begin new text threads or make outgoing calls using your Google Voice number.

CTIA Enterprise & Applications 2011 wrap-up: Springboard, Atrix and CUE

And that’s all she wrote, folks — warm and sunny San Diego was a wonderful host for this year’s CTIA Enterprise & Applications, but now it’s time to head on home. The show was tremendously affected by the news of Samsung canceling its much-anticipated Nexus event, but there were still a few gems we were able to grab. AT&T got the show started off right by announcing a grand total of five new smartphones, not the least of which was the Motorola Atrix 2 (no “4G” in the title, interestingly enough). T-Mobile also unveiled the Springboard, a 7-inch tablet that’s sure to make a splash. So if you’re finally catching up with the week’s gadget news, we’ve compiled a list that’ll make your reading much more convenient. Here’s our full CTIA coverage in all its glory.

Microsoft’s WGA System Phones Home

This article was written on June 08, 2006 by CyberNet.

Microsoft's WGA System Phones Home

The latest update to Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), an anti-piracy program, is calling home to Microscoft every day. This latest update will contact Microsoft regarding the authenticity of your Window’s machine. If it is found to be pirated, they will deny you critical updates. Users that are running a pirated version of Windows will now be notified on their desktop without even having a web brower open.

Microsoft has implemented programs such as this to help reduce the amount of users operating a pirated version of Windows. Those who have unknowingly purchased a pirated version of Windows are eligible for a genuine free copy, just as long as they provide a proof of purchase and turn in their pirated copy.

This latest update has caused some to question whether or not this program should be considered spyware. I’m sure we will be hearing more about this in the future!
