Firefox Easter Egg – The Book Of Mozilla

This article was written on September 18, 2006 by CyberNet.

I was browsing through Wikipedia today when I came upon their Blue Screen Of Death article. It was a lot of fun to read but one thing that really struck me as interesting was this about:mozilla “Easter Egg” that they mention. The Book of Mozilla has been something that even the first version of Netscape has had in it. You can pull it up in Firefox/Netscape by typing in about:mozilla into the Address Bar and pressing Enter.

There are currently three different passages from The Book of Mozilla:

–December 10, 1994: Netscape Navigator 1.0 was released–

  • This verse announces the birth of the beast (Netscape) and warns bad coders (up to Netscape 3, when you watched the HTML source code with the internal viewer, bad tags blinked).

And the beast shall come forth surrounded by a roiling cloud of vengeance. The house of the unbelievers shall be razed and they shall be scorched to the earth. Their tags shall blink until the end of days.

from The Book of Mozilla, 12:10

–March 31, 1998: the Netscape Navigator source code was released–

  • The source code is made available to the legion of thousands of coders of the open source community, that will fight against the followers of Mammon (Microsoft Internet Explorer).

And the beast shall be made legion. Its numbers shall be increased a thousand thousand fold. The din of a million keyboards like unto a great storm shall cover the earth, and the followers of Mammon shall tremble.

from The Book of Mozilla, 3:31
(Red Letter Edition)

–July 15, 2003: AOL closed its Netscape division and the Mozilla foundation was created–

  • The beast died (AOL closed its Netscape division) but immediately rose from its ashes (the creation of the Mozilla foundation and the Firebird browser, although the name was later changed to Firefox).

And so at last the beast fell and the unbelievers rejoiced. But all was not lost, for from the ash rose a great bird. The bird gazed down upon the unbelievers and cast fire and thunder upon them. For the beast had been reborn with its strength renewed, and the followers of Mammon cowered in horror.

from The Book of Mozilla, 7:15

Even Internet Explorer has a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) Easter Egg in version 4 and above that apparently mocks Mozilla. If you have Windows XP SP2 installed you will have to type res://mshtml.dll/about.moz into the address bar otherwise you can just type about:mozilla. After entering that into an address bar you will receive a blank blue screen which is probably meant to relate Firefox to the BSoD. 😉

iPhone 4S lacks “Enable 3G” switch

If you’re among the teeming masses holding a brand new iPhone 4S in your hands, you may be surprised (as we were) to find there’s something conspicuously absent from the Network Settings menu on your new device: specifically the ability to manually shut off 3G data. After receiving word, and a screenshot, from a helpful tipster, rocking a 4S on Vodafone’s network, we found the same option missing from our own AT&T iteration. Of course this isn’t the sort of thing that’s likely to have an impact on most users, but if you’re the type that likes to squeeze every last bit of juice out of that Apple, the omission could cause some frustration. We gave Apple support a call to see what they had to say, and were told AppleCare has no official response on the matter. If you’re lamenting the loss of the 3G flip-switch sound off in the comments below.

Update: A few of our readers are reporting that the original Verizon iPhone 4 also lacked the 3G switch, which means the absence is most likely on a carrier-by-carrier basis.

[Thanks, Chris and Charlie]

Windows 7 overtakes XP globally, Vista found weeping in a corner

According to StatCounter, it’s taken roughly two years for Redmond’s latest to surpass XP and become the world’s most popular operating system. October 2011 marks the first time that Windows 7 has overtaken XP globally, with a 40 percent share of the market versus the latter’s 38. As for Vista, it’s been holding steady at around 11. Not that it’s much of a surprise, as in North America, Windows 7 took the crown back in April of this year. Rounding out the top five, are OS X (though it’s not clear whether that captures all of Cupertino’s beasts) and Linux, which come in at 7 and 0.82 percent respectively. But don’t take our word for it, hop on over to the source links and get your interactive chart on.

[Thanks, Pipera]

Apple Error Reveals 8-core Mac Pro

This article was written on March 13, 2007 by CyberNet.

A nice surprise recently appeared on the online UK Apple Store that confirms what people have been saying all along. Late last night and early today while searching for “Mac Pro,” the first result displayed an option that said “Now quad-core or 8–core processing power.”The image below is a screenshot of the listing from Tuaw.com who managed to get there before it was taken down.

Applequad

Not too long after the buzz started to get around the Web, the entire UK store went down which tells us this wasn’t intentional, and when it came back up the listing was gone. When Intel announced their quad core processor, it was clear that at some point someone would make the move and introduce computers with 8–core processing power.

Apple is probably really close to releasing the 8–core as expected. It was just last month that MacScoop reported that along with the black 24–inch iMac, there would also be the 8–core Mac Pro coming in March sometime.

People have been waiting for this option for months, and soon they’ll be able to get all 8 cores.

Just for fun I decided to configure the most expensive Mac Pro possible, and it turned out one seriously loaded computer at a grand total of $18,125.00. Once the 8–core is available, I wonder if we can push it over $20,000? :) (Specs below)

  • Two 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
  • (4) 750GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drives
  • 16GB (8 x 2GB) of memory
  • NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB, Stereo 3D (2 x dual-link DVI)
  • (2) Apple Cinema HD Display (30″ flat panel)
  • Plus general accessories that they offer like keyboard/wireless mighty mouse

MPAA’s New Target: Peekvid and YouTVPC

This article was written on June 28, 2007 by CyberNet.

MpaaThe MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) is having a field-day with this one! They’re after Peekvid and YouTVPC, looking to shut down both sites for streaming copyrighted material for free.  Both sites have become pretty popular recently (53,000 unique visitors per day for Peekvid), which helps to explain why the MPAA is going after them.

Several bloggers have pointed out that the MPAA may also decide to go after those who finance these sites – or in other words, the companies that provide the ads like Yahoo and Google.

The MPAA claims that both Peekvid and YouTVPC are profiting from “massive copyright infringement by identifying, posting, organizing, and indexing links to infringing content found on the Internet that consumers can then view on demand.”

Keep in mind, neither of these sites actually hosts the content themselves.  They just point users to other locations where they can find the content, which is partially why this lawsuit is such a big deal.

Usually the MPAA has a hard time going after sites whose servers are in other countries.  Unfortunately for Peekvid and YouTVPC, their servers are in San Antonio, Texas and Scottsdale, Arizona which probably means that the MPAA will have an easy win with this one.

Maybe Peekvid and YouTVPC need to think about joining The Pirate Bay over in Sweden?

Yahoo Releases Messenger Beta 7.5

This article was written on December 14, 2005 by CyberNet.

Following in the footsteps of Microsoft, Yahoo has released its beta version of Messenger 7.5 which includes new inbound and outbound calling features. These new features include being able to make calls around the globe for only a few cents per minute. Between Microsoft releasing Windows Live Messenger Beta and Yahoo Messenger Beta there could be some stiff competition rolling out for Skype. Also, for $2.50 per month you can assign your computer a real telephone number. This way you would be able to hand out a telephone number to people and when they call, it will be your computer ringing. Despite the huge advancements that have been made in Voice-Over-Messenger services, they don’t seem to have the clarity that the low priced companies such as Vonage provide. These VoIP services have excellent call quality which, so far, only seems to be rivaled by Google Talk. Come on Google, it is time to roll out the big guns now!

HTC Amaze 4G review

What do you do when you’ve already created a Sensation? If you’re HTC, you repackage that lightning in a slightly different chassis, turn the volume (read: speed) up to 11 and borrow a bit of optical wizardry to add that new smartphone smell. All key elements that can be found in the DNA of the company’s latest imperatively named product offering — the Amaze 4G. Clearly, HTC’s throwing caution to the fickle consumer winds here, raising the bar for Android users’ expectations and mixing in just enough razzle dazzle to win over those hard earned geek dollars. So, what’s the hook this time ’round? No, not Beats — that’s for its Euro stepcousin, the Sensation XE. Here, the main attraction is this handset’s ability to surf along T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 42Mbps network. That’s right, Magenta’s tiptoeing into LTE speed territory and you’ve got Sense 3.0 to help pilot that wireless ride.
