Samsung and Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich / Nexus Prime event back on for the 19th?

This week’s CTIA festivities aren’t the same since Samsung and Google decided to postpone their new product announcement that was originally scheduled for today, but now we’re hearing the Ice Cream Sandwich / Nexus party has already been rescheduled. An inside source tells us the two have moved their plans for the Unpacked event to October 19th in Hong Kong (interested US residents should clear out the evening of Tuesday the 18th, time zones), timed to coincide with the AsiaD: All Things Digital event there next week. Naturally, we’ll be in the house, but with not long to go before the potential date, we’d expect to hear something concrete soon.

Lapdock 100 brings a Webtop IQ boost to Moto phones on Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T

Looking to harness all the power of your smartphone PC-style? Motorola is looking to help with its Lapdock 100 for a number of devices, including the Atrix 2, Photon 4G and Droid Bionic. The laptop shell sports a 10.1-inch screen (smaller and hopefully cheaper than the Atrix 4G’s axed lapdock), keyboard with dedicated Android keys, touchpad, multi-tasking and tabbed web-browsing via WiFi or your phone’s data plan. You’ll also be able to utilize a full Firefox browser, Adobe Flash, Quick Office, Google Docs and a PC-esque File Manager. Just in case your smartphone’s SD card doesn’t offer enough storage space, the dock packs two USB ports for all those extra documents you might collect. Looking to stay ultra-portable, the peripheral weighs a hair over two pounds (less than 1Kg) and touts five hours of battery life — which can also be used to recharge that tired handset if needed. If you’re looking to snatch up one of these bad boys, you’ll have to wait until October 17… and even then, it’ll only hit shelves at AT&T. Verizon and Sprint customers will get their chance “later this quarter” and there’s no word yet on pricing. Need more info? Hit that coverage link for product page and get yourself better acquainted.

Microsoft Office 2007 To Get A Slimmer Ribbon

This article was written on July 27, 2006 by CyberNet.

Microsoft Office 2007 To Get A Slimmer Ribbon

The key new feature in Office 2007 is the Ribbon which is designed to eliminate the need for the standard toolbars. However, in doing so the Ribbon also takes up much more screen space then the toolbars did, in fact, you could probably stack three toolbars on top of each other in Office 2003 and it will equal the screen space that the Ribbon occupies. The Office 2007 UI lead program manager said that this was the primary complaint with beta testers and reviewers. The upcoming Technical Refresh of Office 2007 Beta 2 will include some improvements and a slightly slimmer Ribbon is expected although many details have not been revealed.

There are currently three different ways that you can minimize the ribbon which many people have not been informed about. You can either press Ctrl+F1, right-click on the Ribbon and select “Minimize the Ribbon”, or double-click on the selected tab. A new auto-minimize feature, which had been removed from Office 2007, will be making a comeback. It is know as the Menu Tabs tool and whenever you left-click on a tab in the Ribbon it will pop-up with the contents of the tab. When the user clicks away or finishes what they are doing it will automatically hide itself. There is a movie available (WMV format) for those people who want to see this in action.

I am excited to see what new changes they will do to the Ribbon. They have already included a new Silver theme (pictured above) which is a mix between the kinda pastel blue and the dark black. I definitely like the new theme the best and a slimmer Ribbon would be a great addition!

Relisir Helps You Keep Up with your Favorite Music

This article was written on April 06, 2010 by CyberNet.

Die-hard music fans are going to love what Relisir has to offer. Relisir is a fairly new start-up that offers users the chance to keep up with their favorite bands whether it’s when they announce a new album is on the way, or if a new album has been released.

What we like about Relisir:

  • It could initially take some time to manually enter all of your favorite artists which would make using this service a bit of a chore. However, if you use Last.fm, you can import your favorite artists which will simplify the whole process. Nice touch.
  • As you type in your favorite artists, a drop down list appears which again, helps speed up the process of getting started with Relisir.
  • Once you add your favorite artists, it’s like you’re on auto-pilate and Relisir goes to work for you, keeping you informed with no additional effort on your end. You don’t even need to return to the website (unless you want to), because all of the important info will be sent to your email inbox.

relisir-1.png

What we don’t like about Relisir:

  • Email is the main method of communication – Relisir relies heavily on email to let you know when your favorite artists have released anything new. Other communication options would be nice – perhaps an iPhone or Facebook app?
  • One one hand, it’s nice that Relisir focuses simply on helping you keep up with your favorite artists. However, it might be nice to see a “music discovery” feature as well. If it knows you like OneRepublic, for example, it could suggest other artists similar to it with new releases and give you the opportunity to listen to it
  • Someone who loves their music probably likes to see these artists live and in concert. It would great if they incorporated a tool to help you track when one of your favorite artists will be performing in your area and provide a link to purchase tickets.

MySpace used to be one of the key ways that music fans kept up with their favorite artists. These artists may still have pages, however, many people have moved away from MySpace and no longer use the service. If you’ve been hanging on to MySpace, simply for the purpose of keeping up with your favorite artists, Relisir might just be what you’re looking for.

T-Mobile Springboard hands-on at CTIA E&A 2011 (video)

CTIA Enterprise & Applications 2011 has blessed us with a 7-inch tablet by the name of the T-Mobile Springboard. Similar in look and feel to the HTC Flyer, this Huawei-made slate is just as easy to hold, though it’s completely sans a fancy pen. The device has a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, runs on the latest version of Honeycomb (Android 3.2), and offers a 5MP rear camera with a 1.3MP front-facing shooter. We couldn’t get any confirmation on pricing or availability, aside from being told to expect the Springboard sometime during the holiday season. That may not narrow the timeframe down as much as we’d like, but at least you know it’s an idea for that holiday wish list you’ve been trying to put together. Head below for a full smorgasbord of pictures and a hands-on video.

Update: We were informed by T-Mobile at this evening’s media event that the Springboard will debut for under $200, though no additional solid information is available yet.

The first reviews are out for the iPhone 4S and they’re a lot like we expected, which is to say, exactly what we expected: the same phone on the outside but much better on the inside. It’s faster, has a much better camera and packs a golden bullet with Siri. More »

Newshutch: Top-Notch RSS Feed Reader

This article was written on December 05, 2006 by CyberNet.

Newshutch

It seems like all of a sudden everyone is using Newshutch as an RSS feed reader. Well, maybe not everyone because it isn’t even in the top ten most used feed readers for this site yet, but I noticed that it was mentioned over in the forum along with several emails I have received referring to it.

I decided to check it out for myself and have to admit that I am amazed with the simplicity (and power) that it offers as an online feed reader. I use the freeware application from FeedReader.com myself but if you are looking for something to manage your feeds online then I would rank this right up there with Google Reader. It is loaded with the AJAX goodness that we all love but not enough to overwhelm you.

They do, of course, have the OPML compatibility so that you can import your existing list of feeds. The options are appear to be a little scarce right now but that might be because it is so well designed. One thing that really impressed me is that when you subscribe to a feed you can customize the length (days, weeks, forever, etc..) it will show you previous postings…and the number of items that we provide in our feed for CyberNet is 10. Newshutch must have had us in their database because it was able to retrieve 87 of our previous postings which makes it easier to analyze the quality of a new feed that you are adding.

So if you’re still in search of an online feed reader that will fit your needs I would surely try out Newshutch. If you already found the perfect match why don’t you share it with us over in the forum! ;)

Thanks to everyone who sent in this tip and the people over in the forum!

France’s eviGroup SmartPaddle surrenders to lower prices

You may remember eviGroup’s range of SmartPaddle Windows 7 tablets, the latest arriving back in March with the heavy-duty price of $1,800. Now it’s produced a budget-model and rechristened the hefty original as the SmartPaddle Pro. The new SmartPaddle (keep up) has a 10.2-inch 1024 x 600 capacitive multitouch screen, 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, 2GB RAM, 32GB SSD and a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 that runs Windows 7. Battery life is rated for five hours and the only build-to-order option you have is to squeeze a 120GB HDD in there too — but they don’t recommend you do. The company has stopped talking up its webcam-based gesture controls (probably for the best) and has made the old-school move of including a physical scroll-wheel along one side of the device. It’s available to order now, at the comparably bargainacious price of €660 ($900).

[Thanks, Nicolas]

UK Gov wants opt-in system for adult material, imagine a boot stamping on a trackpad, forever

Looks like Prime Minister David Cameron’s not content with just shuttering the internet during social unrest (whilst condemning others who do the same). He’s declared that four of the UK’s biggest ISPs have entered into an opt-in system for adult material. The move is backed by the Mothers Union but has been flatly denied by the ISPs, who insist they’re offering McAfee parental controls with new signups rather than Government-level web filtering. (Probably a massive let down to those eagerly waiting to delegate their parental responsibilities.) Of course, given the flaky nature of web filtering, any sanguine word that contained an expletive (the word “arsenal”, for example) could be impossible to access until you had an awkward conversation with someone over the phone.
