Nokia to announce QWERTY Series 40 Touch and Type tomorrow?

See those boxes up there? They appear to contain a yet-to-be-announced QWERTY phone. We were able to get a quick glance at the phones from above as Nokia reps were discretely unpacking boxes for that little three-wheeled vehicular contraption parked behind the boxes. Another picture (after the break) reveals a red portrait QWERTY along with the tagline “You. Me. Everyone. Let’s QWERTY,” along with a model number covered up by a white piece of paper. It appears that this one may be the Nokia 303 leaked a couple weeks ago, which seems to be a low-end Series 40 6th Edition Touch-and-Type device. We know it includes WiFi and 3G connectivity, social functions and comes in colors (at least red and gray). We’re just hours away from keynote confirmation at this point, and something tells us that these guys will be making their way into some attendee swag bags come tomorrow. Jump past the break for a few more pics.

Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 Windows Phones slip out ahead of tomorrow’s announcement

Nokia’s big announcement isn’t until tomorrow, but it looks like some of the surprise has now been spoiled by a leak out of Nokia World in London. As you can see in the image above obtained by WinRumors, Nokia is apparently set to announce the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, both of which of course run Windows Phone, and each of which have turned up in some less-than-clear leaks before. In fact, we just got a hold of a shot of the 800 earlier today ourselves (looking a lot like the company’s Meego-based N9), while the Lumia 710 has previously surfaced under the Sabre codename. If the rumors are to be believed, you can apparently look for both to hit European markets in November with a US launch slated for sometime next year, although we’d certainly recommend waiting until tomorrow before you get too disappointed about that latter possibility. Two more close-up shots are after the break.

Ben Heck gets into the pinball business for real, pre-orders begin in January

Ben Heck's Zombie Adventureland

Benjamin J. Heckendorn, the name likely conjures images of shrunken gaming consoles and specially modified controllers. But the modder extraordinaire also has an unapologetic love for pinball. He completed his first flipper project in March of 2007, a Bill Paxton-themed machine loaded with classic quotes from the actor. Then in 2011, he undertook an amazingly complex game based on the beloved, meandering (and highly overrated) show Lost. Now he’s teaming up with John Popadiuk, a renowned maker of limited run pinball machines, to offer his chrome-balled gaming visions to the public. The two are working together on a creation called Ben Heck’s Zombie Adventureland. All the artwork will be hand-drawn and each machine hand-assembled. How many will be made and how much it’ll cost for the privilege of putting one of these in your home or arcade (or home arcade) is still a mystery, but pre-orders begin in January and you can bet they’ll sell out quickly.

Taiwanese Animators Distill Steve Jobs’ Bio Into 93 Seconds of Funny

Steve Jobs' ghost punches his younger self in NMA's most recent video. Image: Next Media Animation

Those kooky Taiwanese animators from NMA.TV have reached a new high in campy 3D synthesis of real-world events: They’ve boiled down all 630 pages of Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs bio into a 90-second joyride through the book’s most juicy revelations.

For the Apple purist or the devout Steve Jobs fan, Next Media Animation’s video may be interpreted as sacrilege. But, no, it’s just hilarious, and all in good fun.

SPOILER ALERT: The animation opens with coverage of how the biography is flying off shelves. Then the fun begins. An iPhone projects Steve Jobs’ ghostly visage, which punches its younger self for not seeking out cancer treatment sooner. Steve later visits Barack Obama to tell him he’ll only be a one-term president. Other video highlights: Steve dancing at a rave (ostensibly on LSD), Steve riding an Apple-branded thermonuclear missile (think Dr. Strangelove) aimed at an Android army, and Tim Cook as Jedi-in-training Luke Skywalker.

But let’s let you decide. Take a gander at the video yourself, embedded below, and tell us what you think.

MyFive: Top iPhone Competitors

This article was written on May 04, 2008 by CyberNet.

Ever since the iPhone launched, different mobile phone manufacturers have done what they could to come up with phones that look and operate similar to the iPhone. Today we’re taking a look at some of the top iPhone competitors out there. Our list includes five, but could be much longer because there are so many out there! Take a look…

#1 – HTC Touch

The HTC Touch uses TouchFLO touchscreen technology that was developed by HTC. It runs Windows Mobile 6 and a rotating “cube” shows you icons for your contacts, music, and more. Unfortunately there’s no Wi-Fi which is one of the down-sides to this phone, but it is fairly affordable at $250 from Sprint after instant savings and a mail-in rebate.

#2 – LG Voyager

The LG Voyager is priced at about $299.99 from Verizon Wireless with a 2-year contract. Of course it’s touchscreen like the iPhone but also includes a physical keyboard that pops-out. Overall it does look pretty sleek and includes Ev-DO support, but doesn’t have Wi-Fi.

#3 – Samsung Instinct

Samsung’s Instinct hasn’t reached the stores yet, but from the looks if it, it’ll be a great competitor to the iPhone. Gizmodo says that it may be the best stab at the iPhone yet! As far as size goes, in dimension and weight, it’s about the same as the iPhone. Even with battery life, it’s right up there with with 5.75 hours of talk-time. Sprint will be the one to carry this one for an estimated $200-$250.

#4 – Garmin Nuvifone

Sometime this year in the 3rd quarter we’ll be seeing the Garmin Nuvifone hit the market. The phone will be big on GPS and helping you navigate, and will feature an on-screen keyboard like the iPhone. Just a few days ago, rumor started floating around that it will be sold to AT&T subscribers for a whopping $500! While it may be pricey, that GPS could be worth it!

#5 – Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

Yet another phone that is expected later this year is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. It’ll have a full QWERTY keyboard, and will run on the Windows Mobile 6 operating system. What will be unique with this phone is a “paneled” interface and an “optical” joystick for easy web scrolling. The price is expected to be over $400, so it’ll definitely be on the higher-end of the pricing spectrum.

Stanford builds super-stretchy skin sensor out of carbon nanotubes (video)

An artificial skin that senses pressure, pinches and touch sounds like a macguffin from The Outer Limits (the episode “Valerie 23” if we recall correctly), but that’s what a team from Stanford University has cooked up on the back of its pick-up truck. Sensors made of silicon films with a matrix of liquid carbon nanotubes ensure the material snaps back to its original shape no matter how frequently it’s pulled about. When compressed, the electrical conductivity of the skin changes, and by measuring where and by how much, it knows the location and pressure of where you jab your fingers. The team wants to combine this super stretchy film with a much more sensitive sensor and if it can do it, then the technology could end up as an artificial skin for burn victims, covering prosthetic limbs or even replacing your multitouch display — just be careful, you might hurt Siri if you pinch-to-zoom her too hard.

Dell Isn’t The Only One Recalling Batteries

This article was written on September 29, 2006 by CyberNet.

Dell Battery One and a half months ago Dell announced a massive battery recall to deal with some complaints of batteries that were exploding. Recently Dell added 100,000 more computers to the list of machines that were being recalled but other companies are also stepping up now.

Sony, who was the manufacturer of the Dell batteries that are recalled, has also manufactured batteries for several other companies. Toshiba announced the recall a few weeks ago and IBM/Lenovo decided they would do the same. Their recalls are no where near the magnitude of Dell’s (4.2 million batteries) but it still affects 100,000′s machines.

I haven’t heard anything about Hewlett-Packard at this point but they also use Sony batteries. I’m sure it will only be a matter of time before they choose to avoid the risk of not recalling the batteries.

Stealth bombers are not invisible—far from it, in fact. The Northrop Grumman-designed B-2 Spirit has a hard-to-ignore 175-foot wingspan and a thin, disk-like silhouette that makes it look like a cross between a stingray and an alien craft from a summer blockbuster. More »

Nintendo 3DS SlidePad coming to the US under the name Circle Pad Pro?

Last month, Nintendo quietly unveiled the SlidePad — a battery-powered “extended slide pad” for the 3DS, slated to hit the Japanese market on December 10th. At the time, there was no indication that the add-on would be coming to North America anytime soon, but according to Capcom, it’s on its way. Speaking at New York Comic Con last week, Capcom’s Ryan McDougall confirmed that the attachment will indeed arrive Stateside by February 7th, alongside the company’s new 3DS game, “Resident Evil: Revelations.” It’s not clear whether the add-on will arrive for other games released before February, but it may very well have a different name by the time it does. According to Siliconera, Nintendo has already filed a Japanese trademark for the name Circle Pad Pro, which could be the moniker we’ll be seeing in the West. Nintendo, it should be noted, has yet to confirm any of this, nor has it mentioned anything about US pricing, but we’ll let you know as soon as we hear more.
