HTC Rezound render resoundingly revealed

Hark! The first renders of the HTC Rezound have appeared online, thanks to some of the device’s cases going up for pre-order. You can see that, like the Sensation XE, the phone has red-glowing soft keys — a bit of a departure from HTC’s traditionally conservative design language. If you recall, the phone formerly called Vigor is said to have a 4.3-inch screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 1GB RAM, Beats Audio and an 8MP rear camera. Now that you know what the Verizon 4G cellular telephone will look like, you’ll be able to pick one out of a lineup when it’s available, which should be on November 10th for $300 on contract.

Cyber Monday 2007 Deals

This article was written on November 26, 2007 by CyberNet.

Cyber Monday Today, as some of you may know, is Cyber Monday here in the United States. It started back in 2004, and is always the first Monday after Black Friday. Instead of going to the stores and standing in lines, Cyber Monday brings all of the great deals straight to your computer.

The official Cyber Monday site lists of some rather disappointing deals that mostly consist of free shipping from hundreds of stores around the Internet. There are, however, some decent savings that can be found by hunting around. The PayPal deal listed below is an especially exceptional one that can save you a good chunk of money. Check out what I believe to be the best deals of Cyber Monday 2007:

Feats Per Minute record playing bike helps you kickstand out the jams (video)

If you’re like us, you spend most of your waking hours attempting to figure out a way to enjoy your vinyl collection on the go. Feats Per Minute offers a simple and handy solution, incorporating a turntable onto the rear wheel of a bicycle — you spin the record player as you ride, and the sound plays out of an old timey horn on the back. There were a few obstacles to overcome: like getting the record to play vertically and making sure the needle skips as little as possible while riding the thing. As evidenced in the video below, the team managed to overcome these problems. However, you have to maintain a constant pace if you want the record to play right, of course — and as for the record itself, we recommend staying away from, say, that mint condition copy of The Velvet Underground’s first LP. It may not travel well.

Google Android Screenshots & Video

This article was written on November 12, 2007 by CyberNet.

As expected Google released their Android Software Development Kit (SDK) today. It provides all of the tools needed to start creating applications that run on the next generation mobile operating system, and Google is getting their checkbooks out to help ensure that Android won’t be a flop…

–The $10 Million Contest–

Google has caught the attention of developers around the world by announcing a $10 million contest that will be awarded to some of the best Android applications. The money will be distributed equally between two Android Developer Challenges:

  • Android Developer Challenge I: Submissions from January 2 through March 3, 2008
  • Android Developer Challenge II: This part will launch after the first handsets built on the platform become available in the second half of 2008

In the Android Developer Challenge I, the 50 most promising entries received by March 3 will each receive a $25,000 award to fund further development. Those selected will then be eligible for even greater recognition via ten $275,000 awards and ten $100,000 awards.

–Touch Screen Android Screenshots–

Android includes an iPhone-style browser that is Webkit-based. It provides a browsing experience similar to what you would expect from a desktop computer. You can zoom in and out of the websites at your own leisure, and it even includes a website history browser that appears to be a sibling of the iTunes Cover Flow:

Microsoft HoloDesk: when you need to juggle something that isn’t there (video)

If you’d thought that OmniTouch and PocketTouch were the end of Microsoft Research’s natural user interface projects, think again. It’s now released a video of the HoloDesk, a tool that lets you manipulate virtual 3D objects with your bare hands. Looking through a transparent display, the objects react nearly instantly, rolling from a sheet of real paper into a real cup and falling into shadow if you block the virtual light-source. The Cambridge lab that developed the tool sees uses in remote working, collaboration or device prototyping. If you hadn’t guessed, there’s a hacked Kinect at the heart of HoloDesk’s DNA, which makes us wonder how long it’ll be before we can use it to play Halo.

Yahoo Says They’re Not Ready to be Microhoo

This article was written on February 11, 2008 by CyberNet.

It’s been a little over a week since news broke that Microsoft offered to acquire Yahoo for $44.6 billion. Their offer translated out to about $31 dollars per share which many people had said was too low for a company that was trading at that price not long ago. Sure enough, Yahoo felt that the offer undervalued them and formally rejected Microsoft. In a document filed with the SEC, they said that Yahoo’s Board of Directors “carefully reviewed Microsoft’s proposal and has unanimously concluded that the proposal is not in the best interests of Yahoo! and our stockholders.”

So will Microsoft come back with a more lucrative offer? If they do what analysts expect them to, they’ll be coming back with an offer of around $35 to $40 per share. Another route they could take would be to do some heavy lobbying directly with the shareholders. If they really wanted to, they could take their original offer directly to the shareholders. The Associated Press said that “if it goes down that route, Microsoft might have to antagonize Yahoo by trying to oust the 10-member board that rejected the original offer.”

It sounds like this is just the start of what could be an extremely long and drawn out process.  Microsoft isn’t going to give up, and if they do finally manage to come to an agreement with Yahoo’s Board of Directors and/or shareholders, they’ll still have to deal with the Department of Justice.  Remember, the DOJ has already said that they are “interested” in looking into this deal for possible antitrust issues. It looks to me like Microsoft is going to have a lot of work ahead of them if they want all that Yahoo has to offer for keeps.

For now, Yahoo says no to becoming “Microhoo.”

Toshiba shows off 6-inch tablet display with 498ppi resolution

Toshiba showed off a 4-inch display for cellphones with a 367ppi resolution earlier this year, and it’s now back with an even higher pixel density for its new 6.1-inch display for tablets (or possibly phones, at the rate things are going). This one comes in at an impressive 498ppi, which translates to a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 — or more than enough for some “photo-realistic” images, according to Toshiba. As for the other key specs, it boasts a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 16.7 million colors, and 61 percent coverage of the NTSC color gamut — plus viewing angles of 176 degrees both horizontally and vertically. What’s more, Toshiba is even suggesting that the display could also be used for glasses-free 3D, which would cut the resolution in half but still be higher than other comparable displays. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when it might actually hit some tablets, 3D or otherwise. Head on past the break for an up-close look at those pixels.

Everything We Know About Nokia’s (Hopefully!) Killer Windows Phones

We’re all pulling for Windows Phone. Have been for a while. Thing is, it’s just not there yet. There’s no single drop-dead-amazing god-phone on the platform. Yet. Hopefully, Nokia’s going to be pulling back the curtain on just that next week at Nokia World. Here’s what we (think we) know so far. More »

Mozilla Automates The Bug Checking Process In Firefox

This article was written on August 11, 2006 by CyberNet.

Mozilla Automates The Bug Checking Process In FirefoxIt looks like Mozilla is really trying to catch bugs early on by using Coverity to scan the source code for errors. Mozilla licensed the Coverity tool more than a year ago but they didn’t want to say anything until they were sure that it was doing a good job. I can only see this tool as being a good thing as long as it is used in addition to the normal bug testing.

Hopefully the use of Coverity will lead to a very stable Firefox 2 which is scheduled for release 6-weeks from today. I’m guessing we won’t see Firefox 2 in final form until early October with the recent push back of Beta 2. Beta 2 has now been delayed a total of 2 weeks and is planned for August 23.

Kinect — it’s the Xbox 360 peripheral that just keeps on giving, now with more edutainment. Yes, that collision of worlds typically yields cringe- and boredom-inducing interactive experiences. Not so with this marriage of MS’ motion-controlling sensor and the fine folks behind TV mainstays like Sesame Street, National Geographic and Disney. The newly inked content partnerships will see the creation of specifically tailored episodes of Kinect Nat Geo TV, in addition to a season’s worth of Kinect Sesame Street TV for Xbox Live, letting your youngins play virtual connect the dots with Elmo. Plans are also underway for a virtual storybook effort, codenamed Project Columbia, aimed at indoctrinating children into the fundamentals of reading, and Rush, a videogame that’ll lead adults and their tots alike through Pixar’s virtual worlds. Official presser after the break.
