New GTA 5 Trailers Highlighting Michael, Franklin, Trevor Released

Rockstar Games teased its fans last week promising a set of new trailers would be launched today at 11 a.m. ET. Well, here we are at 11 a.m. ET and Rockstar Games has kept to their promise by launching some new trailers for us to enjoy this morning.

The trailers Rockstar Games has planned for us today will highlight the three main characters in Grand Theft Auto V: Michael, Franklin and Trevor, which we’re hoping they’re up to no good during their time in each of their trailers. The last time Rockstar released a trailer for Grand Theft Auto 5, we were given a glimpse of not only each of the three characters we’ll play as in the game, but also some of the more interesting activities and additional characters we’ll come across during our time with the game. Hulu: Paid subscriptions have doubled to four million in past year

Hulu Paid subscriptions have doubled to four million in past year

Hulu’s future ownership may be in question, but the video streaming site is apparently doing fairly brisk business on the paid subscription front. During an advertiser event this morning, the site announced that it has managed to double its Hulu Plus accounts in the past year, up to four million. The site’s revenue also hit a record for the first quarter of the year, though Hulu’s not giving out any numbers. As with rivals Netflix and Amazon, the company’s making a big bet on original programming, with a number of exclusive series, including the animated The Awesomes and western Quick Draw.

B&N slashes NOOK in UK: Promo or firesale?

Barnes & Noble has slashed the prices of its entire NOOK ereader range in the UK, including making its NOOK Simple Touch just £29 ($45), as part of what the company says is a temporary promotion. The discounting, which comes alongside a UK literacy push, means the Simple Touch is now the cheapest ereader on the UK market, B&N claims; its backlit NOOK Simple Touch GlowLight sibling is also reduced.

If you want easier bedtime reading, the backlit model is down from £109 to £69 ($107). The system works well in our experience; our review is here.

Meanwhile, Barnes & Noble’s tablet-ereaders are also discounted. The NOOK HD is priced from £129 ($200), down from £159, for instance – you can find our review of it here – while the NOOK HD+ is priced from £179 ($278), cutting £50 from the previous price.

Multiple retailers should be offering the new prices, though we’re already seeing some stock wobbles in some online stores. Exactly how long the promotion will last is unclear, and whether it will be followed up with an all-new range is questionable.

A Closer Look at the Mega Man That Almost Was

Mega Man X was almost a first person shooter. For one brief moment, Capcom was considering rebooting the Blue Bomber in a way very similar to Metroid. After all, if it worked for Samus, it should work for Megaman, right?

Twitter opens up ad-buying to all US users, brings new tools to self-promoters

Twitter opens up adbuying to all US users

Twitter has been slowly expanding its advertising offerings for some time now — first with more ads in more places, then with more folks able to buy ads. Now it’s taken things one big step further and opened up its self-serve Twitter Ads platform to all users in the United States. That means anyone can now sign up and buy promoted tweets of their very own, with all the same options and analytics previously afforded to businesses and individuals invited to take part in the program. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be seeing more ads on Twitter, but you may well start seeing some more unexpected ones. Those interested in shelling out some cash can find all they need to get started at the links below.

Hasselblad stops production of V System cameras (updated)

Hasselblad stops production of its last V System camera

Almost by definition, Hasselblad is a company steeped in tradition — it’s hard to be ultra-trendy when your camera systems cost as much as a new car. We shouldn’t be surprised, then, that the company is only just getting around to halting production on its last V System camera, the 503CW, 17 years after the first models rolled off the assembly line. Interest has simply dropped off quickly in the past five years, the company says. Support will continue, and accessories will sell while they last, but the emphasis from now on will be squarely on digital-first H System cameras like the H5D. Whether or not you’re mourning the loss, there’s no question that the V System has survived a lot during its lifetime, including the transition to digital shooting and new management. We’d say it’s worth pouring one out for a true veteran of medium format photography.

Update: Just to clear the air, the 503CW has been in production for 17 years — the V System in any form has been active since 1957, since before digital was even a twinkle in Hasselblad’s eye.

Apple looks to boost in-car integration with iOS 7

We’ll most likely hear about iOS 7 at some point this year, possibly at WWDC in June, but in the meantime we’re left to speculate on what we could see in the new update. However, it’s reported that iOS 7 will focus more on in-car integration with Apple Maps and Siri. The company is said to be improving in that section of iOS in order to deliver their technology to more cars.

According to 9to5Mac, several sources “familiar with the initiative” say that Apple is in talks with multiple auto makers to bring iOS integration to more cars once iOS 7 hits the mainstream. It’s said that Apple is trying to get auto makers to add native iOS integration to infotainment systems in more vehicles in time for the launch of iOS 7.

It’s not exactly certain as to how Apple wants its products to be integrated into cars, but one possibility is that users can plug in their iPhones into the infotainment system and have a redesigned version of Apple Maps show up on the infotainment display, instead of using the iPhone’s smaller screen.

Siri would also be another feature that Apple is trying to get inside of more cars. It would be similar to what Ford and Chevrolet offer, which we took a look at both recently. Chevrolet is putting Siri integration into the new Sonic, and Ford has its SYNC program, which we also took a look at during CES back in January.

Japanese Firm Launches ‘Unimo’ Wheelchair That Can Traverse Any Terrain

Japanese Firm Launches Unimo Wheelchair That Can Traverse Any Terrain

We’ve seen personal vehicles from Japan that blow away anything we could think of in the U.S., the latest one being the Kidswalker NT. But Nano-Optonics Energy has just launched a new wheelchair that puts the conventional wheelchair to shame with what this one can do.

The “Unimo” is a one-seater electrical vehicle (EV) that looks like sofa and is capable of traversing nearly anything due to its rubber crawler tracks, which replace the traditional wheels found on a wheelchair. It can turn a full 360°, has independent suspension and can climb over a step that is 15cm high, which is nearly 6 inches high. Because of this, the Unimo is able to travel where traditional wheelchairs aren’t able to such as gravel roads in parks or on a sandy beach. (more…)

Skype for Windows adds video messaging (but Windows 8 has issues)

Skype for Outlook.com isn’t the only new software the VoIP firm has today, with Skype Video Messaging for Windows desktop also emerging for those who want to send quick video snippets to each others’ inboxes. Joining February’s Video Messaging functionality for iOS, Android, and Mac, the new Windows beta works fully on Windows 7, but those running Windows 8 only get partial support.

If you’re a Windows 8 user, or a Windows Phone user for that matter, you’ll be able to receive and view video messages but not actually create them. That will be added in “soon” Skype says, though is no more specific than that.

skype_video_messaging_windows_2

The new functionality basically switches Skype from a real-time communication platform to one more akin to email. Users record a brief video using their webcam and, upon selecting a recipient, it’s shuttled off to that contact’s inbox ready for when they’re next online.

Each message can be up to three minutes in length, and you get to send up to twenty of them for free; after that, you’ll need to cough up $4.99 per month for a Skype Premium account. The new beta also addresses some calling bugs in previous Windows versions, particularly when there’s no webcam plugged in.
