Google readies Chrome OS for all comers at the kiosk

Google readies Chrome OS for allcomers at the kiosk

If you’ve yet to lay your hands on a Chromebook or Chromebox, that could change shortly, as the computers may soon find a new life in libraries, hotels, retail stores and even the break room. Today, Google announced an update to its management console for Chrome OS that allows for Managed Public Sessions — in other words, a kiosk mode. Central to the idea, users will be able to login to the computer without supplying credentials, and their data will be automatically cleared at the end of the session. The setup has plenty of appeal for system administrators, too, as they’ll find the ability to set the default web page, block access to specific sites and apps, configure device I/O operation and manage timed logouts. Google has tested Managed Public Sessions with Dillards, The Hyatt in San Francisco and the Multnomah County Library in Oregon. If anything, it’s a good reason to keep a keen watch on your surroundings… you might just spot a Chromebook in the wild that’s begging for some attention.

Amanda Bynes Posts Bra Pics & Tweets About Alarming Weight Loss Goals (PHOTOS)

Earlier this month, Amanda Bynes confirmed our long-held suspicions that she is struggling with an eating disorder, and new photos of the troubled actress have us even more concerned about her mental and physical wellbeing.

On Tuesday, the 27-year-old posted photos of herself in nothing but a lacy black bra and black leggings, and wrote that she “needs” to lose 35 pounds.

Linda Bergthold: Obamacare: Will the trains run on time?

If you have not been sick lately, you may not be aware that Obamacare (The Affordable Care Act) is actually already being implemented, and the implementation is going fairly smoothly. Adult children without health insurance are remaining on their parents’ plans until age 26; children with pre-existing conditions cannot be turned down for coverage; everyone with insurance is getting free preventive care; seniors are seeing their drug prices go down; insurers are being forced to return money to policyholders and their rate increases are being scrutinized by state regulators. What remains to be implemented – the state exchanges or marketplaces for the uninsured, individuals and small employers– is on track to start enrollment in October of this year with coverage beginning in January 2014.

As we get closer to the October date, you will undoubtedly hear more doubts about whether or not the state marketplaces (and the ones run by the federal government in states that have refused to implement Obamacare) can actually meet the expected deadlines. New Mexico policymakers heard today that their exchange might be delayed, and many states are still debating whether or not to participate and run these exchanges or let the federal government do it for them. It’s a dilemma for states with Republican Governors who have declined to run a state marketplace. They are faced with a distasteful choice — scramble to put together their own insurance marketplaces or let the feds do it. Neither choice is very palatable, and the foot dragging has been noticeable.

Where does that leave you? If you are lucky enough to live in California, New York or even Massachusetts (that already has an insurance marketplace), you will be able to sign up for insurance at an affordable rate come October of this year. If you live in one of the states that will have a federally run insurance marketplace because your state legislature declined to organize one of these marketplaces, you will also have the opportunity to enroll in plans that include the federally mandated “essential benefits.” There may be some glitches, some misinformation, some delays — but by January of next year, you should be able to sign up for meaningful coverage in your state.

Canon 5D Mark III firmware update enables improved AF, uncompressed HDMI output

Canon 5D Mark III firmware update enables improved autofocus, uncompressed HDMI output

If your camera arsenal includes a 5D Mark III, prepare to get your download on. Earlier today, Canon released a major firmware update for the hit DSLR — version 1.2.1 enables clean, uncompressed HDMI output with simultaneous LCD display and recording to CF or SD cards, along with cross-type autofocus for apertures as small as f/8, bringing that aspect of AF capability in line with the EOS-1D X. You’ll be able to take advantage of improved autofocus performance even when using an f/5.6 lens with a 1.4x extender, or an f/4 lens with a 2x extender. On the video front, version 1.2.1 will let you boot an uncompressed YCbCr 4:2:2 feed to an external recorder, enabling your pick of codecs and frame rates, while also eliminating arbitrary limits on record time. The free download, available for recent versions of Mac OS and Windows, is yours for the taking at the source link below.

Magikarp Swallows Nintendo DS, Sony PSP

If you’re a Pokémon fan, you probably are familiar with the Magikarp – or as is known in many circles, the Magicrap. Despite being arguably the most useless Pokémon, the orange fish is still one of the most popular characters in the series. So what better way to show your allegiance to the splashy Magikarp but to carry around your handheld gaming system inside of one.

magikarp case

Flea Circus Designs‘ interpretation of the Magikarp is definitely a bit more rectangular than we’re used to seeing, but they had to make it that way so it could stand a chance at holding onto a game system. It’s made from fleece and felt, and is big enough to hold onto a Nintendo DS, DS Lite, 3DS or a Sony PSP. It’ll also gobble up most cell phones and small digicams. Magikarp’s mouth is also lined with Velcro to make sure that it doesn’t accidentally spit your gadget out.

Cast your rod and reel in the Magikarp case over on Etsy for $25(USD).

Twitter for Glass app confirmed by LeWeb founder

Yesterday, we reported that tweets were being spotted on Twitter containing pictures sent from an app called Twitter for Glass, with the evidence later being deleted and remaining only in the form of screenshots. While there was speculation that the images could, perhaps, be Photoshopped, there was more than a few things indicating the tweets – and app – were real. Fortunately, we didn’t have too wait long for confirmation.

Glass

A very similar tweet was fired off today by Loic Le Meur, founder of LeWeb, containing an image and the hashtag #throughglass. The image in the picture was taken from behind the wheel while on the road, showing some cars and road, as well as an arm gripping the steering wheel. The position certainly looks correct for Google Glass.

There is one notable difference between his tweet and those that surfaced yesterday – the absence of a flag showing that it was sent by an app called Twitter for Glass, as well as the stock text that was included in yesterday’s tweets, with Le Meur’s featuring the hashtag and nothing else. Regardless, when asked by the folks over at CNET if it was sent via a Twitter Glass app, he said yes.

And so there you have it – although the company hasn’t confirmed or denied its existence, confirmation has been given alongside anecdotal evidence that a Twitter for Glass app is real and running in the wild on several pairs of Google Glass. When Twitter will give the app its official public debut is unknown, but we’ll certainly keep you updated when it happens.
