Tom Brokaw: No News Outlet Should Meet With Eric Holder, DOJ Off-The-Record (VIDEO)

Tom Brokaw stressed on Thursday that news organizations should not agree to meet with Attorney General Eric Holder off-the-record.

The former NBC News anchor appeared on HuffPost Live to discuss his new show “The Brokaw Files,” which debuts on the Military Channel Thursday. When asked about Bob Schieffer’s recent critique of the Obama administration, Brokaw said that he believes journalists can take positions on such issues and that he himself has been “critical of the Obama administration” on numerous occasions.

He said that the DOJ’s investigation of Fox News’ James Rosen was a “complicated” case, but that the agency “could not have been more hamhanded and clumsy in the way they went after” the reporter and Rosen’s source.

Petal The ‘Squitten’ Sits Like A Squirrel, Is Adorable (PHOTOS)

Petal the kitten sits like a squirrel — and it’s nuts how cute she is.

The 5-month-old cat has a genetic deformity called radial hypoplasia, which means that she has no bones lower than the elbow joint in her front legs, the Daily Mail reported.

Cats with radial hypoplasia are known as “squittens” because when resting, they often sit back back on their hind legs in a pose that resembles a squirrel.

Tumblr Sponsored Posts hit web with dollar-sign icon

This week Tumblr has begun to roll out sponsored posts beyond their mobile application environment. While back on the 22nd of April Tumblr brought advertisements to smartphones, users working with their desktop computers and browsing their Dashboard with a web browser will see the same thing. Because the Yahoo buyout of Tumblr was announced so very recently, it’s likely this move was scheduled well ahead of said acquisition.

As Tumblr states today, it’s been one year since the first sponsored post appeared on Tumblr Radar. This program has since garnered “more than 10 million likes and reblogs” in the months between there and here, and Tumblr is glad to usher in said content to their main console.

Posts that are sponsored will be appearing to regular users the same way a normal piece of content would. In an effort to keep Tumblr as visually pleasing and “cool” as it has been, sponsors create advertisements in the same manner a regular Tumblr user would. This means the same title, image, placement format and everything.

Though these posts will appear in user feeds the same way they would any other post, a shining dollar sign will appear in the upper right-hand corner. As this dollar sign is a light gray and meant to be unobtrusive, these posts will “simply blend in”, as Tumblr hopes they will.

Does this sound like a positive move to you? If you’ve been using the standard Tumblr app on your iPhone or Android device, have you noticed paid posts yet? They’ve been there for a few weeks!

Google And Facebook Co-Founder Chris Hughes Donate Money Directly To Poor Via GiveDirectly

A nonprofit that gives cash directly to Kenya’s poorest people is getting major support from Google and Facebook.

GiveDirectly, a wealth transfer service, identifies poor households in Kenya, funnels donations to those in need via cell phone and lets them do whatever they please with the funds. The initiative, which was founded in 2008, got $2.4 million from Google in December and Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, who serves as a board member, is currently working on recruiting other deep-pocketed donors, according to Forbes.

“Instead of building hospitals, why don’t we just give poor people money? Research shows it’s effective,” Hughes said to a group of bigwigs at an event in San Francisco earlier this month, according to Forbes.

Presented for your squealing delight:

What we have here is a photo of the National Zoo’s fishing cat kitten being weighed in a bowl. The kitten is barely two weeks old now. Zoo staff don’t yet know if this baby is a boy or a girl. They do know the kitten weighs 446 grams — just under a pound — and looks heartbreakingly adorable sitting in a bowl on top of the scale providing that measurement.

Why This Affirmative Action Debate is Different

The lines of argument over affirmative action have changed little since the idea first combusted into controversy in the 1970s. But as the Supreme Court nears another critical ruling on the issue, the social and demographic context for these arguments has been transformed in ways that make the choices both more complex and consequential.
