Huawei Windows Phone appears in render, said to be the Ascend W2

Huawei Windows Phone appears in render, could be the Ascend W2

It feels almost unfaithful to the Ascend W1 to be looking at a potential sequel already, but that’s what evleaks claims this is. How he got the image we have no idea, and neither do we have any price or specs to go with it — it’s just this lone render of a Huawei handset running Windows Phone 8 in Chinese. There was actually a previous leak back in April (shown after the break), which also purported to be the Ascend W2 and which did come with some detail: a 720p 4.3-inch display, Snapdragon S4 chip, 8MP rear camera and 1GB RAM for $289. However, today’s picture fails to match up with the earlier one in a number of respects, not least in the shape of the bottom edge and in the position of the front camera / sensor opening next to the earpiece, which means the only certainty here is that they can’t both be right.

Dish Social app brings Twitter, Facebook to Hopper DVRs

Dish Social app brings Twitter, Facebook to Hopper DVRs

Dish is a little late to the social television party, but it has finally arrived with the aptly (if not creatively) named Social app. The app, available on Hopper DVRs, shows personal Facebook, Twitter or Now Watching feeds — which displays tweets relevant to the show and channel being viewed — in a right rail alongside the video window. Social also enables full tweeting functionality and the ability to post Facebook status updates to up to four accounts for either social network. Lastly, the app delivers data about the amount of Twitter action related to the program being watched, such as the number of tweets in the past hour and where those tweets are coming from. Not bad, eh? All you Dish customers no longer need a second screen to spew forth your digital vitriol the next time David Benioff and D.B. Weiss kill off your favorite resident of Westeros.

Pebble firmware update 1.11 arrives with UI improvements, Simplicity watchface

EDIT Pebble version 1110

Pebble’s smartwatch might have launched with limited capabilities, but the list of things it can do keeps growing. Now that the company has released firmware version 1.11, you can add a few more features to that list. The update brings notification and set time UI changes, multiple notification viewing, the wearer’s current speed measured by RunKeeper, swaps the music app’s next and previous buttons and squashes a few bugs. It also installs the Simplicity watchface on the device that’s sure to make minimalists happy. Sadly, there’s nary a hint of a new game in sight so you’ll have to make do with Tetris and Snake whenever the mood for smartwatch gaming strikes. To get version 1.11, launch your Pebble smartphone app and tap “check for FW update.”

Microsoft rolls out updated Windows Phone App for Desktop

Most people alternative between using their smartphone and computer for doing various tasks, such as downloading media and taking images. As such, keeping files in sync between the smartphone and laptop is important, and also a bit time consuming if attempted to be done manually. Because of this, Microsoft created the Windows Phone App for Desktop, which allows Windows Phone users to sync media to a PC. Today that app was updated with improvements and expanded support.

WPAD-Podcasts_thumb_3ABED3D1

Using the Windows Phone App for Desktop, users can sync media files, such as music and photographs, from a Windows Phone to a PC running Windows, keeping things organized and accessible across multiple devices. The desktop app has been around for a little over six months now, up until now having been available as a preview version. It is no longer in preview mode, and has been updated across a few spectrums.

Included in the update, which is available for download now, is expanded support for podcasts, in particular support for podcasts beyond iTunes podcasts, which has been a feature in previous preview versions of the desktop app. Now podcast listeners can sync any podcasts automatically to a Windows Phone handset if the audio files are saved in a folder on the corresponding PC.

Getting updates for the desktop app has also been simplified over the preview versions, updating more in the same fashion as other applications. Rather than having to head over to WindowsPhone.com to grab the updates manually, users will enjoy having an automatic notification appear when updates are available, which can then be downloaded via an “update” click in a nearly hands-free manner.

The ability to sync from various libraries was also expanded quite a bit, giving users more flexibility over previous versions. Rather than being limited in what libraries can be synced, users can now sync any library or folder on their PC to their phone, including those located on external drives. Those three aside, the rest concern bug fixes, which Microsoft says was based on feedback it received from the various preview versions of the app.

John McCain: Syrian Rebels ‘Do Not Understand Why We Won’t Help Them’ (VIDEO)

John McCain spoke publicly about his visit to Syria for the first time Wednesday night on CNN’s ‘AC 360.’ The Arizona senator quietly entered the country and met with rebel leaders Monday.

McCain emphasized the desperation of the rebels’ situation, with Bashar Assad’s army receiving arms from Russia and support from Iran and Hezbollah.

“I wanted to be able to go back and be able to tell my colleagues in the Senate that at least the military side of those who are fighting against Bashar Al Assad is well-organized and they are well-led and they have people now who have been fighting for over two years,” McCain told Anderson Cooper. “And they really are fighting an unfair fight. As you know the scuds continue, the air attacks continue, the massacres continue.”

NVIDIA Shield drops by the FCC, gets ready to fill pre-orders

NVIDIA Shield drops by the FCC, gets ready to fill preorders

Eager to get your mitts on NVIDIA’s first Tegra 4 device? Cast your jealous eyes upon the federal government — they’ve already got one. NVIDIA’s Shield gaming handheld dropped by the FCC to get its label approved, betraying its original code name, Project Thor, in the processes. Hardly a surprise to see the device passing federal muster, of course, as it’s slated for release at the end of next month. Unfortunately, the filings don’t reveal any hidden goodies (that is, no cellular radio), just a standard WiFi antenna. Still, if label location drawings and test reports are your thing, check out the FCC link below.
