EarSkinz correct Apple EarPods’ biggest flaw

I tested an early sample of the orange EarSkinz 2s.

Some people love Apple’s EarPods and some people aren’t so fond of them.

If you’re in the latter group, it’s probably because Apple’s retooled earbuds have a tendency to slip out of your ears while you’re doing something as mundane as walking around. That’s where products like the EarSkinz 2 (ES2) come in.

I’ve been testing an early sample of the company’s silicone covers for the EarPods and they definitely work. My EarPods, which I admittedly don’t use all that much, now stay in my ears — and I haven’t noticed a difference in sound quality (not that the EarPods sound incredible to begin with).

I’m not sure why EarSkinz needed to do a Kickstarter campaign since it already has EarSkinz products out for Apple’s original earbuds, but, hey, it’s a good way to get a bunch of preorders along with a little publicity, so why not?

Facebook intros verified pages and profiles, takes a page from Twitter

In an effort to help users identify legitimate pages and profiles of popular celebrities and businesses. Facebook has rolled out their own verification system that’s a lot like Twitter’s own offering. Verified Facebook page and profiles will have a small blue checkmark next to their name, indicating that it’s the official page or profile of said person or business.

fb-verified

Facebook says that verified accounts “belong to a small group of prominent public figures (celebrities, journalists, government officials, popular brands and businesses) with large audiences,” so if you’re wanting to get that blue checkmark stamp of approval, you’ll want to make sure that you’re one of the popular kids in school.

This is an effort to cut down on the number of fake Facebook pages out there in the wild. Many celebrities either have fan pages that are run by avid followers of a particular celebrity, or a celebrity is simply being impersonated by someone else. The verified checkmarks will cut down on this kind of nonsense.

For now, it appears you can’t request to be verified, and Facebook’s own way of verifying users hasn’t been disclosed yet, but we’re guessing the social network will slowly make its way around to popular page to give them the verification stamp over the next few months. In the meantime, you can still report fake profiles or pages that are impersonating you.

Both Google and Pinterest also have similar systems, allowing celebrities and other popular folks to be verified in order to not confuse other users, and all of the social networks have the similar checkmark badge that shows up next to someone’s name.

Google Maps adds images for three historic parts of New York City (video)

Google adds Street View images for historic parts of New York City

While Google has practically blanketed New York City with eye-level imagery, few would doubt that there’s still ground left to cover. The search giant is filling in some of those gaps with new Google Maps galleries for a trio of historic areas. A collaboration with Historypin lets the curious glimpse photos and videos of regions affected by Hurricane Sandy; those who want to visit the 9/11 Memorial, meanwhile, can see Street View panoramas of both the North and South pools. Google is also expanding its Street View coverage of Central Park to include its many legendary trails, not just the roadways. If you’ve been meaning to pay a virtual tribute to any of these three spots, they’re waiting for you at the source links.

Scientists uncover frozen mammoth, blood flows out

North-Eastern Federal University researchers in Siberia.

When it comes to cloning extinct critters, it seems most people are holding out more hope for re-creating woolly mammoths than building “Jurassic Park.” The researchers involved in a mammoth-rebuilding project are probably pretty excited about a recent find by Russian scientists who uncovered a fairly fresh new mammoth.

A paleontological expedition from the Research Institute of Applied Ecology of the North, North-Eastern Federal University, and the Russian Geographical Society discovered a female mammoth in a remarkably good state of preservation in the Novosibirsk archipelago in Siberia. North-Eastern Federal University has partnered with controversial South Korean cloning scientist Hwang Woo-Suk (who was found to have faked data involving a procedure to clone human embryonic stem cells) for a mammoth-cloning effort.

“The fragments of muscle tissues, which we’ve found out of the body, have a natural red color of fresh meat,” says expedition leader Semyon Grigoriev. “The reason for such pres… [Read more]

This thing kicks ass. There’s no way that this Fett wouldn’t have survived the Sarlacc pit. Be sure to hit up that link above because there are a ton of images of this one and other awesome samurai figures he has created.

This guy needs to get with a toy company and let the masses enjoy playing with these things. I’d love to see a whole series of Samurai Star Wars characters.
