SEC charging Nasdaq $10 million in civil suit settlement over Facebook’s IPO issues

SEC charing Nasdaq $10 million in civil suit settlement over Facebook's botched IPO

When Facebook became a public company in the summer of 2012, its initial public offering (IPO) didn’t go quite as well as the company expected. It went poorly enough that the US Securities and Exchange Commission took action against the exchange which handled Facebook’s IPO: Nasdaq. A civil suit filed against the exchange, alleging computer software errors that resulted in a lackluster IPO, was settled today — the exchange will pay $10 million to settle the suit. The settlement, of course, doesn’t mean that Nasdaq is confirming or denying the alleged issues its computer system incurred last year; said issues allegedly cost investors in the ballpark of $500 million. Probably best to un-friend Nasdaq now before things get awkward.

Use-it-yourself orbiting space telescope in the works

Planetary Resources said it is launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the Arkyd, a publicly accessible space telescope.

Planetary Resources, a pioneer in asteroid mining, announced today that it is planning to launch the world’s first publicly accessible space telescope.

The company, led by X Prize Foundation Chairman Peter Diamandis, said in April, 2012, that it planned to prospect and mine asteroids. But today the company expanded on that mission, saying that it is engaging “in another passion of our team: to make space exploration accessible to everyone.”

That seems to have been the impetus for the Arkyd, “a technologically advanced, orbiting space telescope that will be controlled by YOU, the crowd,” wrote Planetary Resources on the Kickstarter page that it’s using to try to raise $1 million to get the program off the ground.

Twitter for iOS and Android updated with tweet preview, easier photo sharing

Twitter for iOS updated with tweet preview and expanded timelines

There doesn’t seem to be much broken that needs fixing on Twitter for iOS or Android, for that matter. Which is why the latest update to hit the App Store and Google Play deals mostly in minor UI tweaks. Now, Twitaholics that bump up the Twitter app on both mobile platforms will enjoy a cleaner compose look that lets users preview outgoing tweets (including full sized photos), tag locations and quickly share photos from their gallery. On the iOS end, notifications have been added for when your friends newly sign-up for the service, as well as an expanded timeline view that does away with borders. While Android users now have access to more detailed information from the notification tray. Naturally, there are the requisite, unspecified bug fixes bundled into the software bump, but that bit’s unglamorous and (thankfully) left devoid of detail. That’s right, it’s nothing to get hot and bothered over folks — just a minor facelift to further enable your oversharing.

2014 Corvette C7 Stingray to appear as Autobot in Transformers 4

The new 2014 Corvette C7 is gaining popularity in the mainstream, mostly due to its bold new design that gets rid of the Corvette’s iconic circular taillights, as well as introducing a slightly new body design overall. The car’s latest appearance will be in the upcoming Transformers 4 movie as one of the many Autobots that will be featured.

The Corvette C7 will feature a bright green paint scheme along with what looks to be a large spoiler mounted on the back. The movie’s director, Michael Bay, calls this unique Corvette a “special race-inspired” version that will be used for the movies. We’re not so keen on the bright green color, but then again, we don’t want to speak prematurely without seeing the movie first.

Another car making an appearance in Transformers 4 is the $2.4 million Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, which has a sleek black and turquoise paint scheme. It’s not yet said what role these two cars will play, but we’re guessing they’ll be a part of the numerous Autobots that we’ll see in the film.

The main Autobot from the franchise, Optimus Prime, is also said to receive a bit of a makeover for Transformers 4, with a more sleeker profile than what we’ve seen in past movies. As for the cast of the upcoming Transformers 4 movie (which is set to release sometime next year), Mark Wahlberg will play the main character, according to IMDb.

Other cast members that are said to appear in the new film include Stanley Tucci (from The Hunger Games and The Terminal), as well as Kelsey Grammar who starred in the popular sitcom Frasier. Technically, there’s no official title for the movie yet, and we don’t expect Transformers 4 to be the real title, as the past three movies have never used sequel numbers in their titles.

Facebook introduces verified Pages and Profiles

Facebook introduces verified Pages and Profiles

Taking a page out of the book of other social networks, Facebook is now making it possible to verify celebs and other high-profile people and companies. The feature, which consists of a small blue checkmark sitting next to their name, extends to Pages and Profiles of popular individuals and businesses, as a way to limit the confusion a reader may experience when trying to filter between real and fake accounts. It appears that Facebook is taking upon itself the duty of deciding who to verify, but it’s still a good way to ensure that your favorite Engadget Facebook Page is manned by — you know — actual Engadget editors (nudge nudge, Mark!).

EmoPulse bracelet smartphone wants to go beyond smartwatches

The Smile smartphone is born to be worn.

(Credit: EmoPulse)

From Google Glass to the Pebble smartwatch, wearable tech is where it’s at. The curved-screen EmoPulse Smile is a smartphone, smartwatch, and digital companion wrapped into one chunky wrist bracelet. It will be interesting to see if it can successfully get off the ground thanks to an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign.

There’s no Android versus iOS battle here. The Smile actually runs on Linux. That may put it at a disadvantage as far as app stores go, but it does give EmoPulse leeway to develop a custom system to try to carry out some ambitious features. The company is working on creating a device that learns what movies you like, monitors your sleep, and interacts with you with a personality meant to out-Siri Siri.

EmoPulse says it has a working prototype of the Smile. The Indiegogo project page is full of earnest descriptions of what the bracelet/phone/smartwatch will be able to do, including speech recognition, digital assistant functions, desktop-quality gaming, and emotional sensors that pick up on your moods. I’ll be impressed if it can do a good job of pulling off half of what it wants to.
