Galaxy S5 could go the aluminum route, report says

Like rebellious teenagers in bedrooms across the world, it seems Samsung could be about to go through a metal phase. Reports suggest the Samsung Galaxy S5 — follow-up to the smash hit Galaxy S4 — could boast the first aluminum body in the Galaxy lineup.

Android Geeks reports the as-yet-unreleased S5 will be encased in an aluminum unibody like the iPhone and HTC One, styled under a new philosophy dubbed “Design 3.0.”

Exactly what that involves remains to be seen, but word on the street suggests the S5 will be the first of many high-end Galaxy smartphones to be made of metal.

The Heartbeat is a Pinhole Camera Powered by a Watch Movement

We’ve all seen pinhole cameras, but this one is pretty extraordinary. It is called Heartbeat and it was custom-made by Korean designer and photographer Kwanghun Hyun. What sets it apart from other pinhole cameras is that it uses a watch movement for its timing mechanism.

Heartbeat

The Heartbeat is a fully-functional camera, and uses a watch mechanism to help control exposure time. Hyun took apart the existing watch movement and reassembled it with his own movement plate and bridges. The end result looks really amazing, with the watch contained within a sealed compartment on the top of the camera.

It is a beautiful camera and all the more beautiful that it is fully functional along with its looks.

Floating Boombox

Do not shun boomboxes, o ye youth of the current generation! You do not know of the influencing power of such a device, back in the days when your parents were wee lads and discovering their identity in the world. Having said that, is there a place for the classic boombox in the 21st century? The correct answer would be “No”, but this does not mean that the idea on a boombox cannot be resurrected to take on the more modern devices out there. The $149.99 Floating Boombox is one such updated retro gig, where it will definitely add some volume in your next trip to a body of water, regardless of whether it is a natural lake, by the beach, or at the pool.

The Floating Boombox would play nice with devices such as the iPhone, iPod, Android gadgets or other compatible ones, even in the water. The Floating Boombox will be fully waterproof and submersible, and thanks to a waterproof compartment that houses your device, you need not feel as though you are drowning while on land, with the air choked out of you as you realize your newest purchase has been dunked underwater. No sir, no worries of that at all – unless the waterproof compartment has somehow been compromised by an unseen needle or your cat’s claws, of course. It is said that the Floating Boombox would be able to pump out tunes for up to 25 hours using battery power alone, or you can plug it directly into an AC outlet – not a good idea if you’re going to dunk it in the pool when doing so, of course.

Nintendo sees Mario and Zelda giving Wii U a big boost, 3DS continuing to grow

Super Mario 3D World demo at E3

There’s no question that Nintendo is hurting these days, mostly owing to the lackluster reception for the Wii U. The company’s Scott Moffitt is upbeat, however: he tells CNET that the Wii U should enjoy a 3DS-like sales renaissance this holiday now that games in bigger franchises, like Mario and Zelda, are on the way. Of course, the 3DS also had the advantage of a dramatic price drop — but never you mind that. As for the handheld’s own performance this year? Moffitt claims that the 3DS is the only dedicated console whose sales are still growing, and he expects the system to have its best holiday yet. His positions on the 3DS and Wii U strike us as optimistic when Nintendo is up against two major console launches and the ever-present threat of smartphone gaming, but the gaming giant has defied the odds more than once in its history.

JVC unveils $18,000 4K interchangeable lens camcorder with Nikon F-mount

JVC unveils 4K camcorder with Nikon Fmount

Lovers of 4K and Nikon glass, rejoice: JVC has just launched a 4K large-sensor camcorder that will use Nikon F-mount lenses. The JY-HMQ30 camera will operate in manual focus mode only — even with AF glass — though f-stop settings will be controllable in-camera for modern lenses with no aperture ring. As with the company’s fixed lens GY-HMQ10, the interchangeable model will record AVC/H.264 4K video at up to 60 fps onto four separate SDHC cards, each capturing an HD-sized quadrant with a total maximum data rate of 144Mbps — and also capture 1080/60p video at 28Mbps onto a single card. Other features include a JVC 4K clip manager that’ll convert files to Apple’s ProRes422 codec, live 4K, 60 fps output to a monitor or portable recorder, 4K time-lapse recording, a focus assist function and stereo XLR microphone inputs. Though the company’s taking orders for the 1.7 million yen ($18,000) camera starting today in Japan, there’s no word yet on availability or pricing stateside — but you can probably start polishing up those Nikon lenses soon.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active coming to AT&T June 21st for $199.99, pre-orders begin tomorrow

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active coming to AT&T June 21st for $199, preorders begin tomorrow

It appears that we were spot-on about yesterday’s teaser, as AT&T has officially unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active this morning. Available in stores or online starting June 21st, you’ll be able to grab one of your very own for $199.99 on a two-year commitment. As we mentioned yesterday, the “life-proof” IP67-certified handset will come in Dive Blue (pictured above) and Urban Gray; there’s no mention of Flame Orange, sadly. As a recap, the Active features Android 4.2, a 1.9GHz quad-core processor, a 5-inch 1080p TFT LCD panel, microSD slot with support for up to 64GB, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage (no word on how much is user-accessible), a 2,600mAh battery and an 8MP rear camera with 2MP front-facing cam. Dimension-wise, the Active measures at 139.65 x 71.25 x 9.1mm and weighs 5.29 ounces (150g) — not too shabby for a tough device.

While AT&T acknowledged that the device shouldn’t be considered “rugged,” it’s still technically a durable smartphone that takes advantage of a sealed water-resistant cover which will protect the phone in up to one meter of H2O for thirty minutes, and even features a special camera setting called Aqua Mode which is designed to let you take some nifty underwater shots. If you’re eager to get the sales process started as soon as possible, AT&T will be offering pre-orders of the device beginning tomorrow.
