850-hp Jaguar C-X75 hybrid supercar struts its speed

With a name fit for a “Star Wars” droid, the Jaguar C-X75 boasts some out-of-this-world looks and seriously sexy specs. Jaguar engineers combined a 1.6-liter turbo supercharged four-cylinder engine (that delivers 502 horsepower) with two electric motors (390 horsepower) for a total output that exceeds 850 horsepower.

When the car’s at a complete standstill, racers cranking the C-X75’s seven-speed manual transmission can achieve 0-100 mph in less than six seconds. If that’s not fast enough for you, the theoretical top speed of 220 mph should set you straight, or at least put you in the next county quite quickly. The C-X75’s carbon composite chassis undoubtedly assists in creating a very light footprint.

WSJ: Google working on an Android-powered game system, smart watch and new Nexus Q

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google might make another foray into living room hardware as it’s currently developing an Android powered gaming console. Since that’s just not enough of a rumor bomb, the talkative “people familiar with the matter” also claim a wristwatch and followup to its “postponedNexus Q project are on the way. If you believe the rumors, its reason for jumping into all these categories is to beat products Apple is reportedly developing in the same categories, with at least one of them launching this fall. Finally, the leaks indicate Google’s next major Android update will be “tailored to low-cost devices in developing countries,” and are ready to go in a much wider variety of devices.

That could mean laptops or even appliances running the rumored Key Lime Pie flavor of Android, built by manufacturers like Samsung which is already working on a watch of its own. Also mentioned is HP, which the report goes on to claim is building laptops that run Android. Companies like Ouya, Mad Catz, Pebble and GEAK probably think Mountain View is already late to the party, but official OS-level support and heavily marketed hardware could take these segments to the next level.

"Amazon" for Drugs: This Atlantis Commercial Is REAL (VIDEO)

You’d think the commercial above is a Funny or Die parody, mocking the quirky typographical advertising we’ve encountered all too frequently while waiting for videos to load. But it’s a very real commercial, for a very real service.

The commercial appeared on YouTube on Wednesday, promoting Atlantis, a black market drug sales site that will assist you in anonymously purchasing drugs online — that’s illegal drugs, not your basic Tylenol.

According to Forbes, the entire business operates on bitcoins, a peer-to-peer electronic cash system.

Chris Christie Vetoes NJ Pork Gestation Crate Ban

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) prides himself on his record of fighting pork in the state legislature. But he’s never taken that mandate as literally as he did Thursday, when he vetoed a bill that would have banned the use of gestation crates on pig farms in New Jersey.

The bill, S. 1921, passed the state Assembly by a vote of 60 to 5 and the state Senate by a vote of 29 to 4 in May, with both Democrats and Republicans supporting the effort to prohibit farmers from using any confinement method that would prevent pigs from turning around or laying down. A poll taken in the state showed that 89 percent of voters were in favor of Christie signing the measure into law [pdf].

The bill’s passage was hailed by animal rights groups, such as the Humane Society of the United States, as an important symbolic victory for their movement. Though major buyers, such as McDonald’s and Smithfield Foods, have recently announced plans to stop buying pork from farmers that use gestation crates, 83 percent of American pigs still spend some time in them, and no state has passed legislation banning their use. Efforts to pass such legislation in four other states have failed, though a bill remains on the table in Massachusetts.

Fast-Food Workers Denounce Wage Theft ‘Crime Wave’ At New York City Hearing

NEW YORK — When Shenita Simon, a mother of three, gets paid for working overtime at her fast-food job, it allows her to splurge on the little things that she pointedly describes as luxuries, like school field trips for her kids and clothes that have never been worn.

But Simon, who works at a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Brooklyn, says her bosses find all sorts of ways to make sure she rarely gets that extra pay. “They have no respect for the law,” she said. “They need to be held accountable.”

In a step toward that end, Simon joined dozens of other low-wage workers at a Thursday New York City Council hearing on economic injustice in the fast food industry.
